Sources: Michael Brown Says He Got Money From Jeff Thompson

Michael Brown

Former D.C. Councilmember Michael Brown, who told supporters last night he plans to plead guilty to federal charges stemming from an undercover FBI operation, has provided law enforcement officials with information about the man at the center of the ongoing federal probe into Mayor Vince Gray's 2010 campaign, according to people familiar with the investigations.

Brown provided information that he received illegal campaign contributions from D.C. powerbroker Jeff Thompson via former Gray campaign aide Jeanne Clarke Harris, according to sources. Harris pleaded guilty last summer for her role in what federal prosecutors describe as a vast conspiracy, in which an unnamed co-conspirator illegally funneled more than $650,000 into efforts to get Gray elected. Thompson, a one-time major city contractor and campaign donor, has been widely implicated as the co-conspirator, though he's not been charged with any wrongdoing. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It's not clear what campaign Brown says Thompson aided him for. Brown received at least $26,000 from donors connected to Thompson during his unsuccessful run for the Ward 4 Council seat in 2007 and his successful at-large election in 2008. Those donations include several from companies owned by Harris. In her plea agreement last summer, Harris admitted to being a straw donor in several elections, funneling the co-conspirator's money to various candidates with donations in her name or in the name of companies she controlled in order to hide the fact that the money actually came from Thompson.

Brown did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Always a dissappointment when someone who had such potential messes up so badly. As to Brown taking money from Jeff Thompson that is no shocker. Thompson clearly gave money to nearly every councilmember and every person running for Mayor for years. He did this not only in DC but we know in Georgia and Maryland as well.

The issue with the Mayor really needs to be settled one way or the other and Machen needs to focus on that for the people of the District. He either did or didn't do anything illegal. So far there is no proof that he did and clearly he is a great Mayor. But being a great Mayor will not innoculate him if he did anythig illegal. Time for the U.S. Attorney to wrap up his investigation one way or the other.

I'm not surprised by these allegations. Michael Brown came across as shady and a loser to me. I didn't vote for this guy. Grandma always said, when you lay down with dogs, you will get up with fleas.

    this is a shame.
This guy has ruined his fathers reputation. (the Brown name is already not so good)

Ron Brown was a paid lobbyist for Baby Doc Duvalier - his son is simply following that same legacy of sleaze

Gray needs to return the illegal $653,000 he got from Thompson to the public treasury. It's obvious that Thompson stole it in the first place. That's why he's being sued for overbilling $33,000,000.
Then Gray needs to resign. His campaign was corrupt. Compromised at the highest level.

Gotta love DREZ. He who focuses on Gray even when Gray isn't the subject.

At some point, you need to let it go man. He's the Mayor. Fenty lost. Get over it.

What a goof. If he wasn't Ron Brown's son he'd be holding out for a job at the new Wal-Mart.

My response was to Peter Rosenstien who, inconveniently for you, brought up the elephant that has been in the room for the past two years. And, no, that elephant is not named Fenty. He's not in this race. Gray is. There's a reason Gray's approval ratings are at about 40%. And talk all you want about Fenty (you are the only one who is) but that doesn't change anything.

    Is Peter Rosenstien myopic?

  • mizwillis

There he goes again, and again, and again.
    What elephant in the room?
What race is Gray in right now?
Isn't drez talking about Fenty in #8?
So SEis4ME isn't (the only one who is).

The esteemed Mr. Rosenstein does not denigrate the Mayor.
He makes a valid point about how The USAtty's office is doing a dis-service to our city by trying to drag this mess on and on and on and on.

Holy Cow, drez: The man said Gray is a 'great mayor', and that it has not been proven he did anything wrong.

BTW in my experience talking with people throughout this city, that 40% rating of which you speak is BALONEY!!!!

I'd wager that more than half of those who throw around "myopic little twits" have no idea what myopic means. This includes Courtland.
