Read: Michael Brown Charged With Bribery
The bribery charge former D.C. Councilmember Michael Brown told his supporters about last night was filed in federal court this morning, and you can read the charging documents below.
Brown's charged with bribery for accepting $55,000 from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen looking for Certified Business Enterprise certification. The information also seeks $35,000 in forfeited funds from Brown, alleging that he gained the money through the crime. Critics have long said the CBE program is too easy to exploit for corrupt purposes.
Brown's charges come in the form of a criminal information, which suggests that he'll plead guilty. He may already be cooperating with the feds looking into other D.C. officials—sources familiar with the investigation say he's told investigators that he received money from Jeff Thompson, the alleged financier of Mayor Vince Gray's 2010 shadow campaign.
Update,11:55 a.m.: Brian Heberlig, an attorney representing Brown, has released a statement saying Brown is cooperating with investigators:
Michael Brown made a serious lapse in judgment at a time when he faced severe financial difficulties. He has accepted full responsibility for his mistakes, cooperated with the authorities, and intends to plead guilty to the information filed today. He has apologized to his friends and family and asks his former constituents for their forgiveness as well.
