Vince Gray to Muriel Bowser: “Bring It On”

Like most people, a trip to Rosslyn makes Mayor Vince Gray slightly irritable. Witness his performance this morning on Newstalk with Bruce DePuyt (which is filmed across the Potomac River) in which Gray takes strong issue with Ward 4 Councilmember and mayoral candidate Muriel Bowser's assertions that his administration moves too slowly.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about. I think it’s ridiculous,” said Gray. “First of all, energy? Who has more energy than me? Bruce, I work 16 hours every day so if she wants to talk about energy I’d be happy to talk about that.”

"Bring it on, you're saying," DePuyt asked.

"Yeah, exactly, bring it on," said Gray. "If she wants to work until one or two o'clock in the morning as I do everyday, and bring some energy to that, I'd be happy to discuss that with her."

Gray then touted what he sees as his strong record of accomplishment, which seemed particularly heavy on large-scale private developments that are being driven much, much more by D.C.'s hot economy rather than anything the District government is doing. As usual, Gray wouldn't say whether he's going to run for another term or when he would announce his decision. (The all-important Democratic primary is a year away.) But his strong defense of his administration's "sterling" record is yet another clue that Gray's likely to run, U.S. Attorney Ron Machen be damned.

As for Bowser, she was game to mix it up, telling LL that she stands by her message that the citizenry are displeased with the pace at which the Gray administration moves.

"Perhaps he's not in tune with what the residents of the District of Columbia are saying," says Bowser, which, for those paying attention marks the first official dust up of the 2014 mayoral contest!

This isn't the first time Gray's gotten feisty on DePuyt's show. Last summer unloaded on three councilmembers (including Bowser) after they called on Gray to resign for allegedly benefiting from what federal prosecutors say was an illegal "shadow campaign." Gray took particular aim at Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh, his erstwhile ally who'd broken up with him via voicemail.

There's just something about Rosslyn.

  • Daddy Grace Fish Sandwich

Muriel Bowser is a loser and she's Adrian Fenty in a dress wearing make-up. I don't care if the next mayor is white, purple, black, green, mulatto, brown, Drag Queen, Muslim. I just want the next mayor to be the man or woman representing D.C. voters, not representing special interest groups and lobbyists.

  • cutthecrap

you've been eating too many fish sandwiches, and they ain't from Daddy Grace. More like between some legs. If the current Mayor isn't representing special interest then I don't know who is. Let's get rid of that old gray fart and band of crooks now.

  • ward4

Bowser doesn't make any kind of sense. She doesn't have a key issue. Her key piece of legislation is weak tea. The only reason reporters are saying she's a leading candidate is because she's a black woman of moderate intelligence. She hasn't actually done anything.

And she's imploding before the election has even started.

  • Dan

CM Bowser is such an intellectual and legislative lighweight that her candidacy is laughable. She has not accomplished anything of note. I am a ward 4 voter who has never voted for her.

I don't undestand why their is so much animosity towards Council member Bowser. She has been nothing but responsive to the needs of her constituents and introduced comprehensive ethics legislation. Of course within the time frame she had to work additional legislation will be needed but she got the ball rolling. She is one of a very few Council members who is NOT under investigation, resigning from their council seat due to scandal, etc. I don't always agree with who she receives funds from, i.e. David Wilmot, but she has never been accused of using those funds for illicit or illegal purposes. She uses her constituent services fund to HELP her constituents not buy tickets for sky box seats at sporting events.

As a caveat, Mayor Gray is my cousin by marriage and I voted for him not because of that but because I was dissatisdied with the Mayor that Adrian Fenty had become. I am sure Muriel Bowser has learned from the mistakes of her predecessor and the current Mayor and will be responsive to everyone from Ward 4 to Ward 8 and everwhere in between.

  • No more shadows

Please DC lets rid ourselves of Count Dracula Gray. This guy is terrible and an absolute disgrace to our great city.

  • Bill

Gray is a disgrace to the city! Run a corrupt campaign and walk away saying you know nothing about it. He should have known what was going on in his campaign and we all think he did. Get the man in jail. Bowser is intelligent, thoughtful and would make a great mayor.

  • SaveWard7

Someone needs to help her get her head out of fenty's a$& and breath some fresh air. Her brain cells are dead!!!

  • Catfish

I think this current mayor of ours is doing a pretty darn good job; great cabinet, unemployment and crime down, financial health second to no other city in the country, investment in affordable housing, strong push on infrastructure and transit projects, no tax increases, school modernization unabated.

  • truth hurts

Gray's throwing down against Machen more than against Bowser. Frankly, I think Machen is getting cold feet. He can indict Gray today if he wants to, but he wants Thompson on board first because he's worried about relying on Clarke as the key witness. Gray understands his chances of survival get better if he runs again (before indictment), so he's positioning himself to play that card. The US ATTY needs to make his move before Gray outflanks him.
Re the two bulls, noodlez, time will tell if they fuck them all.

  • RealDC

Bowser is a ding-bat and the more she opens her mouth, the more she removes any thoughts otherwise.

Mayor One-City will whip her azz all over town including in ward 4!

The only bad thing is that ward 4 will be stuck with Bowser until 2016. SMH.

Gray wins re-election over Bowser....easy.... Wells, Evans will not challenge Gray.

  • drez

    Indict the MF already.

  • drez

Oh, and noodlez, I'm pretty sure Machen is the bigger bull, though he certainly is taking his time walking down that hill.

  • Bryan Danielson

I will only vote for Bowser over Gray if Gray is indicted. I am not wild about Gray, but he's actually recovered quite well from the hot mess that was the first year of his term and governed the city well. Bowser brings nothing new to the table, none of her complaints about Gray can be quantified by any real metrics, they're just tired rhetoric.

  • Drez

I'won't vote Gray because, at the end of the day, receiving and keeping $650,000 in illegal money makes him an unethical crook.
Whatever else he has done, that much is true.

  • mizwillis

    Mr. Drez,

What makes you think you are more qualified than the US Attorney, a Federal Judge, and a randomly selected jury to determine whether or not Mayor Gray has committed any crimes?

Your statement 'Whatever else he has done, that much is true.' can be labeled churlish, immature and plain old pig-headed. What is it with you and your foolish obsession wanting the worst for the elected Mayor of our city?

I may be able to understand your lack of civic mindedness, but Mary Cheh also jumped the gun and she's a constitutional scholar. By the way, have you noticed even she is speaking more positively about Vince Gray?

Care to share? I'm not kidding, I would really like to know the real reason for your boorish attitude. That is if you know.

  • drez

He's a crook. He walked into his campaign office the night before the final reporting period before the primary with $100k in hand. It was illegal money from Thomas. All told he took $653,000 in illegal money. And he kept it. None of this is contested. It's fact.
I'd rather be churlish, or even pig-headed, than a crook.
It's the civic-minded citizen on me.
And at the end of the day, regardless of the silly names you call me, Vince Gray is a crook. He should be ashamed.

  • mizwillis

Silly names or not, you do act like a very petulant, vindictive and immature child. Fact is that you seem to be the only one who KNOWS what went on during the 2010 campaign. Some of us hypothesize and even attempt to predict what the outcome of the investigation will be.
But you prove your lack of civic mindedness and YOUR lack of shame is obvious. Do you ever think about the accusations you make? Do you really believe you would know FACTS that the US Attorney's office doesn't know? Do you really believe there would still be no indictment if the elected mayor took $100k from a councilman who is now incarcerated for what is reported less than $400k?

Personally speaking, I don't know what happened during the 2010 campaign. What I do know is that some of the insecurities of your previous predicament are glaringly visible. Seek help, Sir.

  • S.E.

"Mary Cheh also jumped the gun and she's a constitutional schoar".

    This Bitch is CRAZY!!!

  • drez

Jeff Thompson, not Harry Thomas jr.
Gray took over $650,000 in illegal money.
Ask him. He won't deny it.
It's there in the court documents.
His people have already pled guilty to it.
Crook. And no, I'm not ashamed ONE BIT for calling it like it is.

  • mizwillis

    #20 stated:

"It was illegal money from Thomas.....It's fact.": Yet you meant to say Thompson. so it's not so factual.

"His people have pleaded guilty to it.": But did he?

"Crook.": Without so much as a charge much less and indictment.

I for one still believe in due process and innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. By no means am I a constitutional scholar, but CRAZY? I don't think so.

Just asking that rational thinking people avoid casting labels and aspersions on ANYBODY until they have had their day(s) in court.

A simple 'alleged' would do nicely, thank you.

    @Tiffani Johnson

Just the Facts…on the other side of Georgia Avenue and Rock Creek Park.

    Muriel’s lack of concerns:
    1) Allowed Takoma’s 50 year old musical institute -D.C. Youth Orchestra to be stolen by Ward 6 Tommy Wells and given to the Capitol Hill Cluster School Group. She did not put up a fight…just rolled on her back.

Perhaps this is not important to you WatchingInDC.

    2) Black Woman to Black Woman.
Muriel Bowser did not give public gratitude to the Coolidge Football Coach (Ms. Natalie Randolph) and her team of boy players for the good news that the Coolidge Varsity Football Team had won the Oshiomogho Atogwe I Am Foundation Academic Challenge for highest team average GPA.
Our Black young boys have nothing from the Ward 4 Councilwoman to highlight this winning day in high school.

    3) Two Black Women Council members on the City Council. Only Ward 7 Yvette Alexander called Mayor Adrian Fenty to the carpet when he disrespected and twice snubbed our honorable Elder and giant of a woman Dr. Dorothy Height and Maya Angelo when they wanted to save Ms. Cora Master Barry’s Youth Tennis Program in Ward 7. Muriel Bowser did not speak up for this great Black Woman who was awarded the Citizens Award by several U.S. Presidents.

Not Lafayette or Shepherd Schools but the other school in Ward 4.
    4) Muriel did nothing when Coolidge H.S. lost its 2013 renovation funding to Dunbar and Ballou high schools.

    5) Refuses to put a “Blue Top” over the roof-less Coolidge H.S. Planetarium and now water damage is all over the interior ground level in the structure. I’m member of Coolidge Beautification Group.

    6) Allowed WalMart to stock/build two stores within less of a half of a mile of each other. 2 Walmarts in Ward 4…crazy.

    Muriel lacks Compassion
Currently, Muriel doesn’t care about Metro Treatment of D.C. Residents.
Washington Post, Friday, February 1, 2013, “Officials apologize for Metro Incident” Green Line riders describe panic, confusion on trains

Hundreds of Metro riders ended up stuck underground in Southeast Washington Green line; dozens stranded passengers opted to climb out of the trains and into the tunnels.

No action from Metro Authority Area meeting three weeks ago and Bowser (who took Jim Graham place on the Metro Board) did not seek refunds for customers or create a “Customer Courtesy Program” to offer customers discounts or free future metro rides for these mishaps..

    M. Bowser’s Ward 4 actions have followed Adrian Fenty’s city wide policies.

  • KeepIt100

At the end of the day Muriel Bowser comes with too little of a legislative record and too much of the baggage from the Fenty Administration that, love him or hate him, the majority of the citizens of the District of Columbia appeard to have despised. Folks can call Gray whatever they like, but, at the end of the day he is getting the job done. No need in changing a tire that isn't flat.

  • No more shadows

Funny how Gray supporters sound exactly like Fenty supporters did in 2010. "Everything is going great in the city. Things are moving forward." What a bunch of old school crooked hypocrites. Counting down the days when these old bags phase out.

  • Concerned Senior

    To: No more shadows!

We old school old bags could eat the goose that plucked the grass from your grave. Live as long as we have and then talk about how old it is.

The way I hear it Gray supporters are not the only ones who believe everything is going great in the city and that things are moving forward. Why would you want to phase that out?

  • Mahdi Leroy J. Thorpe, Jr.

The city is moving forward, folks are moving into DC in record numbers, the trash get's picked-up, city services are working, homicides are down, recreation centers and park's are looking good and DC is becoming a tech town. Keep Gray in office.

  • drez

The city is on autopilot. Being moved by geo-financial currents larger than any one man, let alone the mayor of this city.
Gray's a crook. Indict the MF already.
