Gray Vetoes CBE Bill

Mayor Vince Gray has vetoed a bill containing his and Councilmember Vincent Orange's proposals to reform the troubled Certified Business Enterprise program.

In a letter to the D.C. Council, the mayor said the final CBE-reform bill pushed by Orange and passed in December was a legal mess, set "likely impossible" standards, and would create a set-up that was "ripe for mischief." (Which, come to think of it, is a pretty accurate description of what the CBE program currently looks like.)

The business community asked Gray last month to veto the bill, citing problems with the bill that the Gray administration itself had proposed. A senior administration official, who was not authorized to speak on the record, says the mayor plans to reintroduce new CBE-reform legislation sometime soon—minus the Council-added provisions the mayor found objectionable. Orange did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • Truth hurts

There's a precedent for this. Mitch McConnell filibusted his own bill. Priceless.

How do you spell veto[e]s, Alan?

  • Village voices

Very disappointed to say the least..Mayor is listening to the Violators and not to Local Businesses..If the capacity is not there then set up a system so companies can move to DC..If you keep it at lower capacity then you are not encouraging outside businesses to move in to the City. Orange overreached and did not read the LEAVES..What a slap on his face!!

Truth you are false and incorrect as usual. First off the bill passed wasn't the bill Gray introduced. It was a sick ploy by Orange to try to push his bullshit bill through. Gray did tye correct thing. Orange created a fucked up bill that was impossible to enforce and didn't have any input from local CBE's other than Gelberg Signs.
