Marion Barry is the man. I wish we had more black politicians in this city who would speak up for black folks.

  • StrangeFruit

    @ Tony,

I agree with you 100 percent.

  • Dog-House Worthy

I am not a big Barry fan but I must agree with him on this issue.

  • OMGeeee

How can Obama do more for anybody when Congress blocks everything he does then blames it on him?

Also blacks want Obama do help him out, but when will we prepare ourselves so when the opportunity comes around we can maximize.

  • capitol hill

Is a crack smoking felon the best spokesperson for black people? Sad

  • cminus

@capitol hill, Barry has never been convicted of a felony. The Vista Hotel incident led to a conviction on misdemeanor possession charges, while his tax and vehicle problems have all led to settlements that kept him conviction-free.

If I'm ever arrested for anything, I totally want Barry's lawyers.

  • GoldCoastKid

umm.. I'm black and Marion Barry DOES NOT speak for me.

I lost all respect for him after the crack thing. Sorry, but if he would have disappeared from public life for 5 or 10 years it would have been nice. but no.. after jail he put on African garb and basically hoodwinked the poor folks in Wards 7 and 9 into voting for him. sure.. he was set up... its whiteys fault... My ass.

Then, years later I started to like the guy again. I met with him on a number of occasions and I found him to be incredibly bright, understanding, and reasonable minded. but then, this past year the Asian thing happened and it occurred to me that Barry is just like the worst of the worst politicians. I think he's a dick. And if he's so good then why does Ward 8 continue to look like a freggin war zone. the people have no jobs, its ghetto as hell, and nothing is changing at all. So tell me... as Councilmember what the hell has Barry done?

Anyway.. no.. there is no way that Marion Barry speaks for me. Not EVER.

  • GoldCoastKid

    ha.. ward 9.. typo
    my bad

  • Typical DC BS

Not a big fan of Mr. Barry by any means, but I do respect him as a human being and politician. His problems have only affected him (i.e. tax issues, crack, women, vehicles etc.)and he has tried his best to push his visions for the community forward. Obviously, he has support and appreciation from many in the community. And I'm sure he has had MANY opportunities to enrich himself at the public's expense, but has had the integrity to be true to the ethical standards of the offices he's held.

It will be a true watershed moment when Marion Barry leaves the political scene in Washington, DC.

  • SEis4ME

@Goldcoast kid, well the name says it all.

I don't know of a single person who speaks for all black people. So who cares if you think he speaks for you. The point is forever relevant, the idea that this administration hasn't done enough for one group who by 94/0 margin supports him. Now maybe your "goldcoast" status isolates you from the rest of black america whose needs..needs to be stroked but I don't have one issue at all w/Barry challenging the fed gov't in this manner. Not one issue at all.

Not surpringly, you have more of an issue w/Barry talking about Asians than the idea of you (like Barry) condemning an entire Ward of black folk. No need to wonder which side of the bread you prefer to eat.

  • tony

@GoldCoastKid, you really think it means something to live in upper northwest.lol!

Man, when you can drop a cool few mills for a dig in the Hamptons then you are talking. As one who have been in the real estate game for many years in D.C. and New York, I can tell you that you don't know what real money smells like.

In fact, there are some who could make the case that the gold coast is nothing but a dressed-up ghetto itself.

BTW, whats wrong with the Hood. History teaches that some of the most important people in the world came from da hood.lol!

And, whether you like it or not, Marion Barry spoke for you for more than 30 years as a city-wide elected official in this city.

  • mizluvsco

GoldCoastKid and all the other wannabees who took advantage of the jobs created and sustained for them by MARION BARRY and moved into an area that was immediately vacated by the ones they wannabe like: You held onto that little ghetto you established and you've managed to pay those exhorbitant real estate taxes, but looking closely at those ramblers that you folks live in remind me of what is more faded glory than a coast of gold. Now those houses on Colorado & Blagden Avenues, Argylle Terrace and some of those 'mansions' along upper 16th St are very well-kept beauts. Maybe that's considered the Gold Goast too, but those homes on the very edge which we commonly refer to as the Gold Coast should be more aptly referred to as the Gold Ghost. All of that real estate tax money ate up renovation, restoration and home improvement coffers. Most of kitchens I've seen up there haven't been re-done since the 1950's and those stupid swimming pools installed in those tiny back yards look ridiculous; especially since they too are outdated.

Take heed to what tony said. Those who genuinely have bragging rights about their wealth never have to prove it
with screen names like yours. Hell, you probably live on the fringe anyway.

LONG LIVE THE MAYOR FOR LIFE WHO WAS BORN AT A CROSSROAD WHILE HIS MOTHER WAS HEADED FOR ANOTHER SHARECROPPING JOB.
HE NEVER FORGOT FROM WHENCE HE CAME AND IN COMPARISON, HE
HAS GONE FURTHER FROM HIS ROOTS THAN ANY OF YOU WANNABEES
EVER WILL. BET YOU WOULDN'T BE THERE IF IT WASNT FOR MOM AND/OR DAD GETTING ONE OF THSE JOBS MARION BARRY PASSED OUT.

  • noodlez

YO OLD-TOAST-YOUR SKIN MAY HAVE SOME MELANIN BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU BLACK. SO YOUR COMMENT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT MARION BARRY DON'T SPEAK FOR YOU. JUST READING YOUR WHINY COMMENT PROVES WHAT COLOR YOU REALLY ARE.

"THE CRACK THING"???? NEXT TIME SAY IT WITH A LIL' MORE BASS IN YOUR VOICE AND PUT IT IN A WAY BLACK FOLK WILL UNDERSTAND IT.

THA CRACK THANGG IS HOW YOU SHOULD PUT IT. SWIRL!!!!

  • cminus

With so many people assuming that GoldCoastKid lives in upper Northwest, I half-expect a response saying that they're actually from Ghana.

  • mizwillis

I hope I am wrong, but Kenyan MCDuffie came across as a charlatan the few times I was in his company. Only as an observer, of course. But his body language screams out a scairty cat who is afraid he might offend somebody in some way even when there is no reason for concern. But then again, maybe he does know he has reason for concern.
    It's just that I don't know. SIGH....I DON'T KNOW!!!!! I JUST DON'T KNOW AND AT THIS POINT, I JUST DON'T TRUST THE MAN'S MOTIVES.

  • IMahdi LeroyJ. Thorpe, Jr.

Marion Barry got it right - Obama has been very deliberate in his first term as President of the United States not to have an agenda for Black people who still are discriminated in the social, economic, political and education arenas of race and class conscious America

Marion Barry has never sold out his people, unlike many Black politicians in DC today whom have gotten about the needs of Black people. Black people and people of color inside and outside the United States admire the fight in Barry and his authentic identity of knowing and feeling comfortable about being Black and needing to be validated by another culture.
