Gray to DNC: Let Eleanor Speak!

Mayor Vince Gray and local Democratic Party leader Anita Bonds are concerned that Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton won't get to preach the gospel of "citizenship rights" for District residents at this year's Democratic convention in Charlotte.

Gray and Bonds sent a letter to Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, asking that Norton be given an evening speaking slot during the convention, just like she's had in years past.

"We request that you follow the precedents of past conventions by offering time for Congresswoman Norton to express our Party’s support for the rights of District of Columbia citizens," the pair said in a letter sent earlier this month.

A spokesman for the mayor says the the DNC hasn't been forthcoming about its plans with Norton, hence the letter. A representative of the DNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As far as LL can tell, there's still room for speakers at the convention. The DNC announced several prominent female speakers today, in an apparent attempt to deepen the gender gap between the two parties. The move comes days after Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin made ridiculously dumb comments about abortions and "legitimate rape." Keeping Norton off the podium seems like a missed opportunity for the DNC, as one of her talking points would doubtlessly be about the continued effort of congressional Republicans to limit the District's ability to spend its own money funding abortions for poor women.

"A spokesman for the mayor says the the DNC hasn't been forthcoming about its plans with Norton,..."

Oh please, lets get real, if the DNC has any plan for Norton it is to ignore her much like all the other members of the House do.

Vince Gray, Anita Bonds et al need to wake up to the fact that Norton has no, zero, none, nada, credibility with her congressional colleagues, as in real voting members, and has been a block to statehood for years. If they want to further the cause of statehood they need to suggest she retire asap.

What sane person would think that anyone outside of the DC Democratic party has any interest at all in anything that Norton has to say? She is not ready for prime time?

Part of the issue may be Norton's complicated stance on voting rights. She's opposed to full on statehood (she has said, more than once, that DC doesn't have the proper infrastructure to be a state), and instead supports keeping our status but adding a voting member. Thing is, most of us in DC want two Senators and full representation.

If not that, I'd rather we do like Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and all the other "territories." Just exempt DC residents from federal taxes! I'll take a few bucks in my pocket over a Senator any day of the week.

    I'm with you DC'er!!!!!!

I agree! Now had Nortan been a lesbian black woman, she would've had a prime time speaking slot. She's a hetero black so the DNC has already filled the black woman slot w/Kamalah Harris.

Make no mistake, Norton does not now nor has she ever given a iota about DC representation. She is about her perception of the fealty and prestige due her. She has been an empty suit for years and should have retired 10 years ago.

Kamalah Harris is Attorney General of California, Eleanor Homeless Norton is a bad joke. I doubt that Norton's being a lesbian would have turned the trick.

Don't let Holmes speak, she will bore people to death.

Most in Congress see Eleanor as another angry black woman. I can't stand the woman and I don't know why D.C. voters continue to vote her into office year after year?

Who exactly will take seriously a letter from Anita Bonds and Vince Gray?

@Sally - That's the issue here! Anita Bonds and Vince Gray are two peas in a pod and rotten to the core. That letter was trashed upon delivery.

  11. #11

She is an old angry and corrupt politician.

Maybe Delegate Norton could bring back her proposal, from way back 11 terms ago, that since District residents have no more of a vote than residents of Puerto Rico, they should also be exempt from federal income taxes.

Since she dropped that bill after being in Congress for a term, I am reviving it for her and making it one of my campaign planks.

DNC - Please put a sock in the mouth of Droopy Face! To do that would be to ignore the pleas of crooks, Gray and Bonds, wanting this do-nothing to speak. I hope that letter was fed right into the shredder.

  14. #14

    I didn't vote for her.

  15. #15

Norton, Gray and the rest of the bumbles will only embarrass themselves and the District. Remember Barry at the last convention?

I'm expecting the DNC to 'disinvite' Gray just like they did Kwame Kilpatrick during the last convention. Nobody likes turd droppings on their floor, not even Dems.

Holmes Norton looks like a Californa raisin and talks like a parrot.

This is old bag needs to go! She has done NOTHING over the last 10 years, NOTHING!

    DC needs new leadership, now.

These clowns are why DC has no representation or statehood. The clown crew are as follows: Norton,Gray,Fenty and the entire council!
