Gray To Be Unprotected In China

When Mayor Vince Gray hits the mean streets of Beijing next week, he'll be doing so without the protection of his security detail.

This information was shared with LL yesterday after LL brought up the mayor's costly Navigator. A little bird at the Wilson Building let LL know that Gray travels sans bodyguards when he leaves the District, a money-saving break from the habits of a certain former mayor. The bird provided  LL with a spreadsheet of some of the costs associated with out-of-the District costs for former Mayor Adrian Fenty's security detail. Trips to Miami, Los Angeles and Virginia Beach totaled thousands of dollars in security-detail related expenses during Fenty's last year in office, according to the spreadsheet.  Take a look:

A quick search of the archives didn't show whether Fenty took his security detail on his jaunts abroad. But in the former mayor's defense, LL has heard that Williamsburg can be a rough place for out-of-town mayors.

Gray has shadow security...like he had a shadow campaign...and shadow repair men working on his fence. Really, Alan....use your brain.

The little bird who shared this information is petty. Gray beat Fenty so why is necessary to make a contrived comparison to make Gray look better, a comparison that is in no way subjective?

  • Um…

REALLY?! This is a really sloppy story. Remember Fenty didn't use security detail in the city. I'm sure if we added up the costs from both administrations this article would be moot. Articles like this make me wonder about objectivity and competence of the author.

First thought reading title, "he's not bringing condoms?"

    Second immediate thought..."Eww"

  • Drez

When Fenty traveled the city without driver or security, folks commenting here said it was so he could do nefarious things without being observed.

  • FYI

    FYI Um...
When Fenty was in the city he DID still use security, just not as he should have. As far as payment goes, they still worked and made overtime while he was in DC. I would LOVE to see the comparison. Alan, help us out here.....

This is bashing in order to diffuse the buyers remorse felt in certain sections of the district. Like wards 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8. Chuck thies type propaganda maybe....I havent yet buttoned down his style but it is clearly someone that is down with Mendleson/Gray and has a flare for bullcrap. My gut says is Chuck Thies though.

  • Twister

James, as for "the little bird, " all records involving the expenditure of public funds are public information and is available to the public. What is contrived about this information-sharing?

  • SEis4ME

Wait! So now Alan's a Gray fan? Not so glowing story about Fenty and he's NOW wrong?

  • KeepinItReal

Fenty WAS nefarious. Ask the maid service at the Downtown Hyatt.

what about Councilmember David Catania and his being Vice President at M.C. Dean, who receives MILLIONS of dollars in city contracts annually, and you voting on the bid each and EVERY time it comes before the council.

What is it about Alan Satan-man and his resistence to reporting the negative of only black city officials? He is so racially transparent.

Why in the world is Gray going on this trip? We have nothing to export to China and as far as direct investment is concerned it's not like you have to travel to China to float a bond or finance real estate. Oh well, guess it's Gray's last vacation as mayor.

  • KeepinItReal

@Beltway, DC Mayors have always traveled abroad seeking investment in local projects. This is nothing new. Williams was criticized for traveling abroad as well.

The difference between William traveling and Gray is Gray is about to be indicted...

I have not seen a detailed list of all the business owners and government officials, etc., who left on this official business trip to China with Mayor Gray. Also, how much is the trip and who is paying for it. I am sure that any security needs will be provided by the government in China in coordination with the US embassy there.

  • Yep

Gray is hoping China will endorse the DC Voting Rights Act.

Councilmember David Catania, your days are numbered, it won't be long before your stuff comes out of the closet. You will pay for your deceit!
