Ward 8 Dems Displeased With Pro Tem Pick

In case you were wondering which ward had the most die-hard partisans, the Ward 8 Democrats appear to have settled that question over the the weekend.

The Ward 8 Dems approved a resolution rebuking the D.C. Council for picking Councilmember Michael Brown, an independent-in-name-only who changed his registration from Democratic in order to get elected to the council, over true-blue Democrat Vincent Orange for the ceremonial pro tempore spot on the council.

One resolution: "RESOLVED, that if there are Democratic members of the Council of the District of Columbia who feel that supporting fellow Democrats is not an important consideration regarding its body leadership, then they should publicly state that being a registered Democrat is an unimportant proposition."

In an interview with LL, Ward 8 Democrats President the Rev. R. Joyce Scott echoed the same points Orange and Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry made last week from the dais prior to the council's vote for Brown: that Brown's past criminal and tax problems, along with his lack of a Democratic Party affiliation, makes him an unwise pick.

"They cut a Democrat's throat for an independent with a rain cloud," Scott says, adding that Brown's past conviction on a charge related to campaign finance violations shows he has a "scheming personality." She also says the fact that Brown's late father, Ron Brown, used to head the national Democratic party was irrelevant.

Scott says she's seeking a meeting with the head of the Democratic State Committee and with new Council Chairman Phil Mendelson to get some "clarity" and "understanding" about what party loyalty counts for these days.

"I need to know what a Democrat is," Scott says.

In a statement, Brown says he takes "no offense at a Democratic organization toeing the party line."

Present at the meeting was Markus Batchelor, the 19-year-old first vice-president of the Ward 8 Democrats. Batchelor, the city's former "youth mayor" and current GW student, abstained from the vote because he's been working as an intern in Brown's office. That association, according to  people present at the meeting, earned him some heckling about why he wasn't working for a Democrat.

"Basically my loyalty to the party was called into question," says Batchelor.

Barry, who was at the meeting, offered to solve the problem by employing Batchelor in his office.

Batchelor says he declined the offer, saying he feels he can serve both the Ward 8 Democrats and Councilmember Brown.

Traitor!

The obsession with party labels uber alles exposes a lack of critical thinking on the part of anyone who uses that as a basis for making decisions about who should lead them.

In other words, they sound like unthinking juveniles without fully developed logic centers in their brains.

Statement from Councilmember Michael A. Brown on Ward Eight Democrats Resolution.

“I take no offense at a Democratic organization toeing the party line. The Ward Eight Democrats (WED) and I both recognize my strong legislative record advancing our shared priorities of affordable housing for all, bringing jobs to District residents, fostering small business growth and shoring up the social safety net programs that protect our seniors and the city’s most vulnerable residents. We have and will continue to agree upon these initiatives regardless of party affiliation,” stated Councilmember Michael A. Brown on Monday.

Isn't Councilmember at large candidate David Grosso another Democratic party hack, that is pretending to be Independent? Seems dishonest at best to start off the election by bending the rules.

  • What?

Ward 8 Dems showed their asses. Big time.

  • U Street area resident

Party affiliations for any office in DC other than House Delegate (and hopefully one day Senate and real Representative) are useless and meaningless.

The W8 Dems look really silly right now.

  • Morally Just

Worth noting that the same ones, Orange, Barry, Rev. Scott who said M Brown is morally unfit to serve said same sex marriage is morally unfit. Is this payback for his support of gay marriage?

Nothing but political games. There is no question about Markus Batchelor's dedication and loyalty to the Democratic party. Leadership of the Ward 8 Dems should be ashamed for even daring to call it into question. Everything he has done for the Ward 8 Dems would be in vain if the leadership feels he is disloyal for working as an intern in Councilmember Michael Brown's office.

Michael Brown is a Democrat, Markus Batchelor is a Democrat. Everyone knows this! Everyone also knows that two seats on the DC Council are set aside for minority parties. If a Democrat wanted to run for those seats, they would have to register as an independent. Why all of a sudden certain individuals want to catch amnesia and act like this isn't the system we work under?

This scenario only proves who the real Democrats are and who are just holding up progress in our city.

  • Up Close

That's shady business if you change your party affiliation because the seat is held for someone other than the majority party but you are still part of the majority party. Blatant deception is a lie and it is not fair to minority thinkers just as Vincent Orange should realize that getting a law degree isn't an entitlement to the position. God help you DC.

  • Wait, What?

    Seriously, who are these idiots?

  • Sally

    Hacks all around.

  • ap

@Thunder and @UpClose - Who reserved these seats for a minority party?

What other city in the USA has restrictions set by Congress on who can hold what seats on the Council?

Who here is defending the system imposed upon DC?

If you are a good candidate you should be able to run under whatever party affiliation you choose.

  • The Java Master

Who cares what Barry, Orange, Brown, etc, think on any subject? They are all self-serving, loud-mouthed, attention-seeking bums who only think of themselves--and sometimes their campaign contributors and cronys.

Hang in there Batchelor and school your fellow ward 8 dems that the Council was responding to the Home Rule Charter when there is a vacancy. Party affiliation is not mentioned with respect to the rule. Also remind them that at the end of the day, after all the bizzare behavior ended, the ward 8 council member voted for Mendelson and Brown. Since his tax issues didn't keep him from getting re-elected, tell them to talk to the ward 8 representative.

  • More Haters

This is a shame that some find this whole issue acceptable. You voted in a crook over Vincent Orange, then a Kipp School Teachers over Orange, then an Independent over Orange.

It seems like everyones job or loyal fanbase is safe on the DC Council except Orange. You have people who are committed crimes on the council and not paying their taxes and they have more support than Orange. That honestly is a problem.

Then to say its the best of the worst? Thomas has ruined the legacy both he and his father established in ward 5. The only bright years they have had thus far were under Orange's administration to be honest. The years before and after were controlled by the Thomas family.

If the only way I gained respect from the city is by continuing to run and proving my record to be good enough to win the seat, then I would be tired and frustrated as well. Orange doesn't have a criminal record so everyone waited until the right time to say bad things about him. When he has a tantrum during a council session.

Kojo Nnamdi didnt make a song or mixtape about Kwame, Harry, or Mayor Gray? But its alright to poke fun at that man when the council pretty much shitted on him..... Thats Sad

  • SEis4ME

W8 dems showed their partisanship by objecting to the council choosing an independent over a democrat? So does this mean that had the council choose a republican, and W6 dems wrote the same objection, then "they" would be the most partisan? Somehow, I imagine this story would've been written much differently.

Markus needs to get it 2gether. The minute he works in a republicans office, the minute his loyalty would be called into question. Somebody needs to give this kid a wake-up call.

  • Homeboy Motors

It's because VO comes off as a cross between a shady used car dealer and Butters from South Park... just sayin...

  • Mark

While I concur that Michael Brown was certainly an imperfect choice considering his ethical lapses, Vincent Orange is hardly any better. A more opportunistic buffoon I have never seen. However, the ward 8 (really, ward 8, lecturing the rest of us?) dust-up over Brown not being a Democrat is convenient and hollow - not particularly riveting attributes in a position.

  • Please Explain?

Can anyone explain to me what Orange has done to be labeled unfit for chairman or pro temp? I want cold hard facts, because obviously financial troubles didnt stop Kwame from being chairman nor did not paying taxes stop Mike Brown from being selected pro temp.

Because Orange believes he is the best candidate for the job should not label him unfit.

Because he changed his views on Same-Sex Marriage (Obama and others did as well) does not label him unfit.

What threat does Orange honestly pose to the city that outweighs Gray, Thomas, and both Browns idiotic decisions?

The city should be ashamed to have a council that in this day and age will promote someone who doesnt pay taxes.

  • Please Explain?

@HomeboyMotors if Orange "comes off" as that, than what the hell does Kwame Brown, Sekou Biddle, or Michael Brown come off as? All three were supported by the council over Orange, and you have witnessed the results of those selections.

Why does Orange receive such a bad image while other councilmembers get the thumbs up?

How many councilmembers have been in politics about as long if not longer than Orange? Barry, Gray, Jack Evans, Catania, Michael Brown, Phil Mendelson...So why does Orange get labeled the "old guard" or apart of the establishment when these guys have been involved for just as long?

Please answer these questions because I honestly want to know why this man continues to get the short end of the stick from the dc council.

I became an Orange supporter after the 2010 Chairman race because he exploited Brown's poor financial decisions which has been the storyline for his downfall. If you personally aren't an ethical/moral person it will show!!

God don't like Ugly, and the DC Council is showing its ass right now!

  • capitol hill

I think Vincent Orange cleared up any uncertainty as to his own fitness for the chairman's position himself with his little tirade. And, it would be a good guide that whatever ward 8 leadership is for would be the last thing the city needs.
Note to anyone typing in all caps and using ebonics: You come off as a total idiot. STFU.

  • Please Explain?

@capitolhill so...you believe Orange is unfit because he told the truth on camera? If Kwame Brown (crook) were selected over you, Sekou Biddle (kwame's boy) gets selected over you, then Mendelson(never ran for chairman) & Michael Brown (doesnt pay taxes/loterry scandal) are selected over you, how would you respond?

Everyone looks at Orange as wild because he went off on council but....is he the only one tired of the council's foolish antics?

Shouldn't someone be yelling at the council for the havoc and embarassment they have caused the city?

  • SEis4ME

@PleaseEx, don't hold your breath because you'll never be able to find an answer from any serious (or not so) person wrt to "why" Orange is unfit. It's just simply, well somebody said he is.

Even reading here, none of these idibots can articulate anything.

  • http://distcurm.blogspot.com/ IMGoph

    pro tem, not pro temp.

please, dear god, if we're going to discuss this, can we use the right words?

  • MrsNoodlez

SMH. There should be a special election on who's "Most Democrat" in Ward 8.

  • noodlez

@capitolhill-I MAY BE AN IDIOT BUT WHEN I CAME OFF YOUR MOTHER'S MOUTH WAS OPEN!

  • capitol hill

May be? No. You removed all doubt, boy.
