Kwame Brown to Resign

Kwame Brown to Resign "Soon"

D.C. Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown has told his colleagues he'll resign, several councilmember told LL after a closed meeting in the Wilson Building. He also apologized to the council.

Brown said his pending guilty plea had nothing to do with his public life, according to several councilmembers.

He'll be making a public statement later today, they said.

Prosecutors filed court papers today laying out one charge of bank fraud that Brown will plead guilty to. The charge stems from a loan against his home equity that Brown took out in 2008 from Industrial Bank to pay for "Bullet Proof," his boat. Brown allegedly overstated his income by tens of thousands of dollars. LL would note that Brown's income from his job on the D.C. Council was, at the time, a matter of public record. What's not clear yet: Whether the feds could have charged Brown with more, but refrained as part of the plea deal.

UPDATE, 4:26 p.m.:

Brown just left the Wilson Building declining to answer any questions. "I'll have a comment tomorrow. Thank you, no comment as of now," Brown said.

As he left his office, there was plenty of pushing and screaming between Brown's angry-looking staff and an uber-aggressive media.

UPDATE, 4:39 p.m.: Mayor Vince Gray just issued this statement on Brown: "I’m shocked by the news; I am disappointed and saddened. I was elected to the council when Chairman Brown was elected to an at-large position. I served with him my entire time on the council. Never would I have imagined something like this would occur."

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: NBC4 has posted video of the scene as Brown left his office and walked to an elevator down the hall:

UPDATE, 8:39 p.m.: The Washington Post has the text of Brown's resignation letter, effective immediately, which he submitted earlier this afternoon. Which means Brown has officially resigned.

EARLIER: D.C. Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown will resign "soon," but not today, a source very close to Brown tells LL.

The source says soon means either tomorrow or Friday.

The Washington Post is reporting that Brown will be charged with fraud in a criminal information, possibly as early as today. That would mean Brown intends to plead guilty to the charges; criminal informations can only be filed with the consent of the defendant. He'd said yesterday he had "no plans to resign."

Stand by for more news as LL gets it.

whole lotta butthurt up in here! StrangeFruit, why are you defending the man? And being a total ass about it doesn't make your arguments look good.

When Gray gets indicted, I think it's time for Tommy Carcetti to step in!

@Really? (#31) - I agree with you! Plenty of folks were overstating their incomes and the mortgage companies and banks were allowing it because they were making money. Now that they see the results of their greed they want to follow the rules they should have been following then.

Mary Austin (#31) - If in fact this is true, I blame the bank. I am refinancing my home and the bank sent an appraiser to appraise the house. Why in the world would Industrial Bank take a customer's word on the value of their house? Sorry, but the bank shares part of the blame.

WOW - I was wondering the same thing. WHY IS KWAME SMILING? He is smiling to keep from crying. Strangely, I feel for him and his family. We must have a heart people! Kwame is but a human being...human beings make mistakes. In this economy, anybody should be able to relate to Brown financially assisting family members. Heck, I'm in a financial deficit for doing the exact same thing but I wouldn't change it for the world because family is everything...when you have nothing else family is there.

I use to rag this man a lot on the forums and such but you know, no one is perfect.

Kwame your arrogance was your fatal flaw but I am sure you've learned a lot from your ordeal and from the ordeals of your colleagues. I feel for you man. I send prayers your way that you remain strong and that this doesn't affect your children.

Who are we to judge...we are merely humans and none of us are without flaws.

Gosh, it really hurts to see our black politicians go down this way.

Send well wishes people, not hurtful words.

Okay Machen, I admire your pursuit of justice SO NOW I WANNA SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH JIM GRAHAM AND THE TAXI MESS...oh I forgot that Graham's boyfriend took the fall for him so ya'll just forgot about Graham who had full knowledge of the taxi bribes.

@Strangefruit - I am black and I say you are stupid, not ignorant. How dare you talk about someone (Mary Austin) not being able to afford to live in this city?!! This city is overrated, and you are stupid and lost. And you speak as though you are wealthy but I bet you are living check to check. And guess what, I own a home in DC but so what! Does that make me a better person than Mary Austin? NO. Does your owning a home in DC make you a better person than Mary Austin? NO. My point is, you have no point. But I must say the only point you've made is that you are wanting...Grow Up Already!

    @ ToiletLawmakers,

So you are saying, Mary-Austin can call me and another commenter "ignorant black people" (on a previous blog )because we didn't agree with her comment about Kwame Brown and Jack Evans?

If you can't intelligent defend your argument or position, and your counterargument includes derogatory name calling (ignorant Black people), then you should be prepared for the door you opened.

FYI, I guess I ain't grown enough; cause I don't allow anyone to spit in my face and tell me it's rainy. In reference to your comment about me living paycheck to paycheck-- LMAO; Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't fit your stereotype.

    He looks like a psychopath.

I'd love to see a full psychoanalysis, the man clearly has some underlying issues. That dead-eyed smile is just weird.
