Source: Lorraine Green Knew of Payments to Sulaimon

A source familiar with the federal investigation into Mayor Vince Gray's 2010 mayoral campaign says that campaign chairwoman and closest friend Lorraine Green knew of improper payments made to fringe candidate Sulaimon Brown.

Court records expected to be released tomorrow after Howard Brooks pleads guilty to lying to the FBI will say that an unnamed individual knew of payments made to Brown by Brooks and acting campaign treasurer Thomas Gore using Gray's 2010 campaign funds, according to the source. That unnamed person is Green, the source says.

Green has not responded to requests for comment from LL in the last few days, including one just before this post was published. Brown has said Brooks and Green paid him cash during the mayoral election so he would stay in the race and badmouth then-Mayor Adrian Fenty on the campaign trail. Green has denied Brown's account, which she's called "ridiculous."

Her attorney did not immediately return a request for comment but told the Post earlier this week:  “My client has cooperated completely with the investigation, which I believe to be at an end so far as it involves her.”

It's worth noting that Gore and Brooks appear to be getting in trouble more for covering up the payments to Brown, not so much for making them. Gore pleaded guilty yesterday to three misdemenors related to making the illegal payments to Brown, but pleaded guilty to a felony for  shredding a spiral notebook that had records of those payments. It's unclear that merely knowing about the payments would even get someone in trouble with the authorities.

Wow, LL. What a scoop! Lorraine Green, Gray's bff and campaign manager, knew about and/or facilitated the S. Brown payoffs?

I'm stunned. Anyway, it's a good thing she never mentioned it to Vince. Oh, wait....

"It's unclear that merely knowing about the payments would even get someone in trouble with the authorities."

@ truth hurts: You must be in a lot of pain regrding that statement. Oh wait....the truth part of it hasn't sunk in yet because you've been stun gunned.

When it does, take 2, or 3, or 4, or 5, or 6, or a whole bottle of aspirin and call someone in the morning if you can wake up and smell the coffee.

Your wishing will not make it so. Looks like "It Ain't Easy Bein' Green, The Queen of Mean" has slipped through the cracks.

Say what? You must've thought there was a clever point in your post, but it didn't come through. I'm not wishing for anything related to the One City cheaters. Just assessing events and looking down the road.

  • um hummm

@#4: Oh, I'm so sorry, I thougt that "....Oh wait" remark was an attempt at being snide. You know being derogatory in a malicious superior way???? My bad, so now just take 2 aspirin and wake up in the morning since you aren't wishing for ANYTHING related to what you call the One City cheaters.

Look down the road and see what will happen to Fenty and his crew for successfully pirating almost $92 million from the residents of DC. Oh wait....that won't happen because Papa Nickles crossed their t's and dotted their i's all the way from McLean to opening up the can of worms on HTJ.

Karma is a 'b' on wheels and it will catch up with them.
-$655.00 is like spitting on the sidewalk compared to what those dudes got away with. Even if you throw in a shredded spiral notebook. Every dog has his day and those woof-woofs will also pay for their crimes in some way.

This is not to say the same will not be true for ANY other crooked pols who think they've gotten away with something. The list is too long to even think about posting.

Lorraine is at fault for EVERYTHING!! She was aware of the shadow-campaign also...Good Job Guys...

While you are at it... Get her daughter and son out of DC government..

  • truth hurts

Sorta figured UH for a blame it all on Fenty type.

To your point, UH: Gray will be indicted, but not just for $655. And not because I wish that Gray gets indicted. He'll be indicted because of the crimes he and his cronies committed and conspired to commit.

It's gonna happen, and then you'll have changed your handle UH.

    Ask Machen.

@ #7: Unlike some people, I respect the office of all officials and would not even dream of asking the US Atty
anything about an ongoing investigation. Or the Mayor or anyone remotely involved in same.

How is stating a truth that must really hurt blaming Fenty for this current mess? Actually all I'm doing is stating a fact. But obviously I expect too much from you th and your crystal ball must be very cloudy because not only can you not see into the future, you seem to have a difficult time with insight.

Read the last paragraph of #5 and then read the 1st sentence in your post #7. This is not about you and it is not about me or Suderman/Madden either. This is about as big a mess as any political machine in this country has ever had to deal with. From the embarassment of a sitting Mayor appearing to use drugs on videotape to a mid level bureaucrat supposedly pilfering $50mil of tax money from city coffers, we are speaking of the Narion's Capital. Why would anybody want to second guess what it is that Mr. Machen is working on. We should all be praying that he has completed his work regarding our elected officials and their staff and/or campaign workers and move onto investigating the much more dangerous and egregious matters confronting our society today.

    Amen Truth hurts!!!

These folks are full of it. Lock their a$$es up! They have screwed Mr. One CIty but he has to take some of the blame for letting these fools take control his campaign/transition team. This is why you don't put a 70 yr old pencil pusher in the mayor's office.

  • John

I really don't beieve this story. There are a lot of axes to grind on this campaign and I for one don't believe that Lorraine Green knew with was happening in the shadow campaign. I know she would have never stood for it freind or no friend of Mayot Gray and they knew it too.

Why won't the press just report the facts and not speculation and innuendo. I am very upset that a good person's name is being tarnished and all because some unnamed source (spineless wonder) is slinging mud with even identifying themselves. How dare you call this truth!

@ um hummm -- The system automatically puts comments into moderation. We get to the moderation queue when we can. I don't know what prompts it to flag things for moderation or not.

So far every one of Sulaimon's claims have turned out to be true.

No matter how many times Vince Gray and his staff say otherwise.

    Yes, Sulaimon was/is a nutjob.

But turns out his claim of extensive contact with Gray was true (which the Washington Post showed with their extensive list of calls and text messages between the two).... this, right after Vince Gray denied any such contact.

That contact included Gray texting the he would not 'breach the contract'.

Simply no way Gray didn't know all about this.

    No way.

And his odd claim of being paid with money orders was true.

  • Ward 4

@Hillman.....Well said. You can say what you want about Sulaimon Brown, but you can never call him a liar. He definitely tells the truth.

  • um hummm

    Thanks MM.

Come on Hillman & Ward 4: Sulaimon "definitely tells the truth"? Did you see his resume? Did he refer to himself as an accountant? Did he know how prepare a spread sheet? Does he know what the application to do so is? Or did he lie about those things?

Did he have extensive contact with candidate Gray or did WaPo only publish the 1 or 2 texted hits between the two?

Ward 4: Is this the same Ward 4 which had so little conficdence in resident Fenty that it voted for Candidate Gray in the Straw Poll?

Hillman: Are you from the same Hill that raised such a ruckus when that Ward gave Candidate Gray the majority during it's straw poll and the same ward that kept senior citizens on a bus for hours to dispute the count?

John: I also think there were lots of axes to grind during that successful, but tainted campaign. I am waiting to see what it is that Mt. Machen does regarding that hot mess. I hope its over and done with unless they target Reuben O. Charles, Jr.

The real gangsta in this saga is the elusive Mr. Clean himself. Reuben O. Charles, Jr. is as slippery as goose grease. It is reported that he has moved on to the Obama campaign which must not have vetted him either. Da ROC is a common thread in too much of this not to have had a major role in that unfortunate campaign situation. He always manages to inure his ghost like persona when it benefits him, but somehow manages to disappear when the day of reckoning arives. He was more than happy to be front and center as long as he was (unfortunately) given one of the most senior roles in the Gray campaign and as long as things were going well.

Not Lorraine Green, not Sulaimon Brown, not Howard Brooks, not even Vince Gray. I would be willing to bet the farm (If I had one, but since I don't I can say it), that Da ROC was the catalyst for the criminal charges by outlining for the Feds who the weakest links were in the campaign chain of command.

Don't forget, he had the most to lose and he also has the saavy to beat everybody else to the Feds locked doors and wait for them to open for business. How much did he owe at last count? Almost $2mil and counting?

Somebody call the White House and all of the Obama campaign offices and warn them. But who knows, maybe they already know, after all he left a pile of you know what in Chicago too.

COME OUT COME OUT WHEREVER YOU ARE REUBEN O. CHARLES, JR.
YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU HIDE FOREVER. EVERY WHERE YOU GO YOU CREATE CHAOS, CALUMNY AND DESTRUCTION: GUYANA, ST. LOUIS, CHICAGO, WASHINGTON, DC.

Just ask Jeffrey Thompson, Jeanne Clark Harris, Mark Long,
Tony Marshall and Vince Gray, just to name a few locsl victims.

    Preach, Hillman.

LOL; this is a circus. Mayor Gray and Kwame Full Loaded Brown should resign.
