Catania No Fan of Gray’s COS or Spokesman

Here's an update from Friday's post about At-Large Councilmember David Catania making some pointed remarks on The Kojo Nnamdi Show about the relationship between the Gray administration and D.C. Medicaid contractor/political donor/target of federal raid Jeff Thompson: Gray's chief of staff Chris Murphy says Catania ought to keep his trap shut.

“Council Member Catania should be ashamed of himself for making such an irresponsible and unsubstantiated claim," Murphy tells LL via an email from Gray spokesman Pedro Ribeiro.

Catania's response: "Who cares?"

Catania clarified that he's unconcerned with what Murphy thinks (as opposed to what Mayor Vince Gray thinks) and that Gray's chief of staff and spokesman are  "newbies" who are way out of their league.

"I don't think Chris or Pedro have served the mayor well," says Catania, who has recently locked horns with the mayor's staff over how to fund health insurance for illegal immigrants. Who cares? Normally LL wouldn't note such a back-and-forth, but this one sticks out for two reasons: One, Murphy's eagerness to poke Catania is a sign of a new, more aggressive tone coming from the Gray administration. And two, this is the second councilmember in a short period to single out members of Gray's staff for a public dressing down.

After an anonymous Gray staffer told the Examiner that D.C. Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown was a "do-nothing chairman," Brown responded shortly afterwards by saying that Ribeiro was "clueless."

“I don’t respond to the mayor’s spokesperson, because I think he’s clueless on some things that came out of his mouth,” Brown told the Post.

That's two—one more and we'll have the rule of three.

you know that alliance isn't just for illegal immigrants, right? Although a lot of people got switched from Alliance to Medicaid, there are many legal immigrants who don't qualify for Medicaid and so are on Alliance--for example, lawful permanent residents who've held that status for under 5 years.

And to think that people like Gatania's style of leadership? This little bytch?

  • Rory

Catania is the one out of his league. Pedro and Chris are true professionals. Catania is just one more political hack that needs to be voted out of office.

  • Peter

Kwame Brown will be out soon. How much do you want to bet? Feds allegedly have enough evidence to have KB share a cell with his boyfriend HTJ.

  • StrangeFruit

Does anyone know what the hell is wrong with Cantania?

His sophomoric outbursts and irrational behavior on the dais are tale-tell signs of either mental issues or substance abuse.

  • RealDC

Catania is a BITCH and needs to be slapped up!! HE IS THE WORSE COUNCIL MEMBER THIS CITY HAS EVER SEEN!

Kwame is a physical and mental MIDGET. When are the FEDS coming to lock his little a$$ up? HE SUCKS!!

David suffers from mental issues and VODKA.. He is bipolar and the stage has gotten worse through the years.

Vince has severe mental issues as well- He fights with multiple personalities like Sybil- Its believed that Vince hear multiple voices.

Both of these guys becoming politicians has expanded the possibility of them being EXTREMELY nasty, personal and vindictive.

Both have received medication but refuse to take it.

  • Truth hurts

Pretty much agree with Strange on this one.

What is wrong with Catania? His outbursts aren't even entertaining anymore.Just one more sideshow attractuion in the circus called D.C. Government. We are so ill-served by all these people!

  • LOL

Catania needs to stop those outburst. I don't know if Murphy is serving the mayor well. A few folk I've come across don't have very nice things to say about how the mayor's office runs. Right now, that is more on the COS than the mayor. Though ultimately it is the mayor's office. He can be hands off but he can't be too hands off, as we saw when he had others running that office.

I'd be really careful if i were CM Catania. Murphy is one not to be f...d with. Murphy probably has more time in public service with some pretty high profile figures that CM Catania should tread lightly. Murphy get's his Irish up from Southie and he'll kick your ass clear across DC and back again. Now play nice!

I am not sure what is happening with Mr. Catania these days. Something seems to be clearly disturbing him and I assume it has little to do with City government. He recently told me he no longer responds to emails which surprised me as he has previously been very responsive.

His attacks on Chris Murphy and Pedro Ribeiro seem uncalled for as they both are serving the Mayor very well and both came to the City with extensive government experience and are doing a great job. Having worked with the Communications staff and Chief's of Staff for Mayor's going back to Marion Barry I think these too gentlemen are easily as good as any who have served in their capacities. They are smart and responsive and clearly understand the City and its needs.

  • H Street Landlord

@Real DC - he certainly isn't worse than the councilmember who plead guilty to stealing our money.

  • Race Matters

Catania seems to be a bitter human being. I heard, his boyfriend alleged to have left him in the past.

  • 16th Street Heights

Catania is not a nice person and he's a bully.

  • deborah

Catania is mentally ill, has no respect for people of color, anytime, he thinks that it is ok to ask a black woman who she is sleeping with from the Dias, it is time for him to go.
