Subject: Barry v. Seegars

The Ward 8 D.C. Council campaign is playing out in the inboxes of several dozen reporters, editors, and D.C. government officials around town this afternoon.

Challenger Sandra "S.S." Seegars blasted a complaint about yard signs for incumbent Marion Barry around by email to more than 60 people at 3:13 p.m., forwarding along a message she had gotten from someone in the ward. A spokesman for the Office of Campaign Finance, who had been copied on the first email, replied at 3:31 p.m. that the office had no jurisdiction over yard signs. At 4:36 p.m., Barry wrote in (using his D.C. government email address, which Seegars had copied initially) to respond to Seegars' initial complaint.

Seegars' initial email:

Subject: Re-Elect Barry Signs

I am addressing this as an ANC Commissioner.

It has been brought to my attention that you are violating the person. Your campaign workers need to stop trespassing. I have seen them too in yards unauthorized. I am notifying the police and OCF. (And, the other candidates)

Subj: Re-Elect Barry Signs

Ms. Seegars

I live on  Newcomb St SE.   Last night my neighbor called to ask me if there was a Re-Elect Barry sign in my yard because someone had put one in her yard.  Sure enough, there was one in my yard and no one asked either of us if we wanted one.

I looked further and saw that the signs were on every lawn on my block.  Is this legal because it certainly isn't ethical.  He should be ashamed to try to give the appearance that he is supported throughout Ward 8 by the unauthorized placement of signs.

The community needs to be aware of this unethical activity because some of us are tired of being the poorest Ward in the city.

Ms. Seegars,

The Office of Campaign Finance has no jurisdiction over the placement of campaign signs.

Thank you,

Good Afternoon,

It is clear that Sandra Seegars has nothing better to do than to take down “Elect Barry Signs” and get people to complain about Barry signs in their yard.

We will gladly take down any sign in any yard that does not want a “Barry Sign” there… The Office of Campaign Finance has responded to Ms. Seegars that they have no jurisdiction over the placement of campaign signs.

Please have the residents of Ward 8 that do not want a Barry sign in their yard, please call the campaign office at (202) 803-2458, notify us with the name and address and we will gladly come and take the sign down.

Thank you and have a blessed day.

    Wowzers -

Poll question of the day: Which is worse?

    A) Barry putting up unauthorized signs.
    B) Seegars' command of the english language.

  • DC Guy

So who would have jurisdiction over this? Anyone? It does seem wrong.

  • S.S.

    jason. whats cha talkin bout

  • Skipper

    Battle of the blowhards.

  • Ward-8

Barry has saturated the entire area with signs which further leads me to conclude he needs to go, if his record is so good there would be no need for carpet bombing the area with his signs, he is going back to the old tried and true BS. Wakeup South East, its time for a change and new leadership!

  • Political Observer

Use the sign placement as an event--hold a presser to bonfire the signs, have people say why they are sick & tired of being sick & tired of being played, getting crumbs, living off the myth & the legend. Don't be tattletalels, get it in & get Barry out.

  • Non Liberal Democrat

Ward 8 doesn't seem to have good qualified educated people to run for office. The voters in Ward 8 tend to vote for trash or criminals like Marion. Former Ward 8 Councilmember Sandy Allen wasn't smart, educated, and she was imcompetent too.

  • Lexus

Barry is an old baffoon...I mean a real "has-been." Retire please. Seegers is illiterate. Stop your petty complaining. Poor Ward 8...you lose.

  • http://letschange.org Respected Citizens

No one has the authority to place signs into any one's yard without their authority.

Whether the Marion Barry is re-elected or not. Challenging this matter is a process of simple mathematics.

So, to the Campaign Office Manager for the re-election of Councilmember Barry have this type of activity stopped immediately, which serves to discredit him, not warrant his respect.

where are the unauthorized yards? and who is that violating the person

  • GodSpeed

Wards 7 and 8 will always be on the losing end due to severely wanting leaders.

@Non Liberal Democrat - I agree with you. Particular to Sandy Allen, I thought the residents pulled her from a dumpster. I think she is the most illiterate in the council's history.

There is no hope for the residents of Wards 7 and 8. They tend for favor thieves, dope fiends, ex cons, and dudes getting arrested for tricking (hey Kevin Chavous, Jr. with your confused behind) for leaders.

  • GodSpeed

Wow...is the professional email for Sandra Seegars really sstrulyyours@aol.com? I guess so, well I will be............"violating the person" LOL LOL LOL
