The Thompson Network Breakdown, Again

This week's column is about accountant Jeff Thompson, a generous political donor who is at the center of a broad investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Last summer LL calculated all the political contributions that could be tied to Thompson and found $730,000 worth of donations since 2010. Since then, LL's found new donors to add to that list, bringing the total to above $800,000.

Below is a breakdown, but first the same caveat as last time: LL might have missed some donors in the Thompson network (actually, LL's sure he did), and LL might have included some donations that have nothing to do with Thompson, though he thinks that's less likely. And here's two more things to consider: Donation limits vary by office; the cap is $500 for ward races, $1,000 for at-large races, and $1,500 for council chairman races. So those who run for citywide races are likely to have received more money.

If you're one of the names above and you've gotten a subpoena from the feds, please indicate so in the comments section.

  • At-Large Councilmember Vincent Orange: $115,500
  • Mayor Vince Gray: $105,000
  • Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown: $37,500
  • At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown: $26,000
  • At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson: $19,500
  • Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser: $20,000
  • At-Large Councilmember David Catania: $16,750
  • Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander: $11,000
  • Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry: $11,500
  • Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham: $8,500
  • Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans: $4,500
  • Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh: $1,000
  • Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells: $0

And here are some notable donations to former elected officials and candidates:

  • Former Mayor Adrian Fenty: $110,000
  • Former D.C. Chairman Linda Cropp: $75,000
  • Former Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr.: $13,000
  • Ward 1 School Board member Pat Mara (for 2008 at-large race): $4,500
  • Former Ward 8 Councilmember Sandy Allen: $2,400
  • Former At-large Councilmember Harold Brazil : $7,000
  • Former At-Large Councilmember Carol Schwartz :$4,000
  • Former Ward 7 Councilmember Kevin Chavous: $7,000
  • Former Ward 4 candidate Doug Sloan: $2,500
  • Former Ward 7 candidate Mark Long: $3,500
  • Former Ward 1 candidate Jeff Smith: $6,000
  • Former Ward 3 Councilmember Kathy Patterson: $8,750
  • Former Ward 6 candidate Kelvin Robinson: $16,000
  • Former mayoral candidates Sulaimon Brown: $100

And one more for good luck: Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley: $72,000. O'Malley's campaign took in 18 checks from the Thompson network worth $4,000 each on a single day in September, 2010. LL is still waiting to hear from his spokeswoman whether his campaign has received a subpoena.

  • I Hate DC

LL forgot to add that Peter Shapiro and Former At-Large Councilmember Sekou Biddle have ALSO received contributions.

Thompson has donated to PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS AS WELL.

Im sure Thompson's Health Care company has helped the residents of DC in some way.

    Everybody is corrupt.

I asked Thompson for change for a 20 one day at when I was walking down K st. I guess im corrupt as well YAY ME!

  • Blogmania

Didn't Pat Mara put out some sort of "statement (a la Facebook!) denouncing Orange for taking $$$ from Thompson?

Betcha wish you could take that one back, huh Pat?

  • TellTheTruth

Lets set the record straight...Peter Shapiro never received a contribution from Jeff Thompson!

  • NE John

    everybody but me

  • Pretty Gurl

J Thompson got some splanin to do. Cause the Feds are hoping he will rat out the Mayor. 2 years for each violation, you do the math.

Also- isn't this the 1 yr anniversary of Sulimongate?

  • whatabouthejerk

Alan- What about Fenty? Don't get him off the hook. He had dozens of bundlers. Thompson was one of them, check on Dr. Orta.
Ask Sara Lasner and her husband Jack Falcechio.

  • http://btolson1@verizonnet.com Victoria

Fenty is on the list collecting 110k from Jeff Thompson... Please notice NO FIGURES GIVEN TO Mayor Tony Williams!!!!

  • DC=DistrictofCorruption

Will someone please tell me what the Office of Campaign Finance has been doing while our dishonest electorates flout the law for years? Is it only me who thinks that this office needs to be investigated, too. Can you blame shady business folks for peddling influence if they have gotten away with it for years. Why do we pay these incompetent people anyway.

  • http://btolson1@verizonnet.com KARMA

Please check out the connection between MARK LONG to everybody!!! He was once hired to drive Vince Gray during the campaign, yet he was directly paid by Jeannie Clark Harris. He also NOW works for Vincent Orange...

Rumor has it he is Jeannie's god son...

  • ?

LL - does VO's total include his race for council chairman? If not - what is that total?

  • Marshall

When is kwame brown going to pay Washington taxpayers? He owes the money still.

This man pretty much bought the city council. At this point I would vote for Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck before I would vote for these losers! People can we please begin to look at new candidates and give them serious consideration. We have to let these old time politicians go. I had some much hope for Micheal Brown but I see he quickly became one of the losers!

  • PoorDistrict

It seems District Officials only respect the laws that catch them in the noose. You wonder if a spade is dropped into the Department of Healthcare Finance or the Office of the Chief Financial Officer of the District, what could be unearthed relating to these issues.

What is the life cycle of these funding sources? Follow the money!

  • InIt2WinIt

Don't hate the player hate the game. When the citizens of the District of Columbia press THEIR elected representatives to explicitly ban the practice of bundling placing mandatory minimum prison sentences against those who violate the law things will change.

Until then, it is all rhetoric. Cheap talk.

  • Fabrisse

I'm happy to see not one penny to Tommy Wells.

  • Artful Dodger

    @InIt2WinIt -

Game = when the player gets caught violating rules, player loses. Please see the above for said losers.

Bad behavior by one group or individual does not justify the bad behavior of another ie, he broke the law so I can too.

The lack of a specific law or the lax oversight of the campaign finance committee is not to blame. These individuals who knowingly sold their influence and sold out the citizens of DC are responsible for their actions and need to be punished accordingly.

The saddest part is that Jeff Thompson was supposed to be a mentor and a pillar of the black community in DC. But, we find out that his success was not due to merit and skill, but upon kickbacks and political payoffs.

  • I Hate DC

This to me is not a huge deal. We know in order to run a campaign you have to raise serious dough.

Thompson has donated to campaigns all across the country. This has become an issue because of challengers inability to raise respectable funds so people will atleast hear them out.

Everyone is trying to paint Tommy Wells as DCs angel. Tommy Wells does not do anything special for the city. A good councilmember but there is not much of his influence over the city that people can recognize.

This is politics we are talking folks. Im not condoning the contracts or special treatment Thompson got but people dont spend money just to be labeled a "good guy". If someone holds the door for you, they expect for you to atleast say "Thank You" or hold the door for them in return.

It isn't like a lot of media networks were they hound you for information and the only benefit you get is that they will write an article exposing you

If your investing that much money into DC, why would you not voice your opinion on wanting contracts?

If the world honestly operated on "thanks for your help but I could care less of what help you need in return" the world would be destroyed..

  • Keith B.

Poor Sillymon only got a hundo? Guess JT gave him his spare change.

  • city blues

I didn't receive any money,.. but, hope I get some to buy a new sofa.

  • gitchafaxstr8

@Keith B.: Guess Jeff T knew first hand what Sulaimon was worth. I think he employed him for a minute.

  • Gwen

It just seems like everyone is jumping to conclusions about how much these Council Members knew about the donations.

I've donated to a few of the sitting and past members and not one of them asked where I got the money to donate. They assumed it was my money. And it was. These members don't ask where the money comes from. They trust that everything is legal.

Some of the people out here think that JT said I'm going to give you some fake money orders, but go ahead and cash them, people will never find out. Do you realize how crazy that sounds?

Members work too hard to be elected to be thrown out over campaign contributions. They won't take that risk.

  • MaybetheTruth

So let's go way outside of the box and also be a bit rude...I don't think anyone will care.

The USAO roots out waste, fraud and abuse. What if they are after Medicaid fraud and they are trying to match the names of donors with the names of people that have submitted Medicaid claims.

The contract was worth $3B, do you believe the USAO would be after an official that accepted a legitimate donation? Doesn't seem worth their time.

  • DConfidential

"LL forgot to add that Peter Shapiro and Former At-Large Councilmember Sekou Biddle have ALSO received contributions."

    @I HATE DC
You seem to through around accusations about the other candidates receiving contributions from Jeff Thompson. Put your money order where your mouth is, and cite the contributions that you are referring to.
Vincent Orange (AKA VO, Vinnie Citrus) is the only bad actor in the At-Large race.

Not surprisingly, your defense of Councilmember Orange is very similar to comments made by @dougsloan, Vincent Orange's campaign manager. Losing the at-large race is the least of the worries for Vincent Orange's present and former campaign team. BTW Vincent Orange's son is his current campaign treasurer, and was his treasurer in 2011 special election. I bet VO will toss one of his inner circle to the USAO before rolling over on his own son.

  • RealDC

What about Biddle's campaign? He got money as well. How much?

Not surprising about Orange because we all know he is "oily" . But Biddle is a "hypocrite" he wants so bad to be an inside player but he can't raise the same amounts as Orange but he will take "suspect donations" too.

  • I Hate DC

@DCConfidential you cant possibly be that dumb if you didnt read the acutal article where it states all the the money other politicians have accepted..

Jeff Thompson is known to contribute to political campaigns. The only reason Biddle and Shapiro are crying is because THEY CANT RAISE ANY MONEY

If they were worried about collecting money before, EVERYBODY is probably scared to donate now.

So in the end, Biddle and Shapiro will lose because they cannot financial finish the campaign #sorry

  • Anti-DC

Oh please oh please Loose Lips do the research on EVERYONE who has ever received money from Thompson. Challenge Obama to do so as well!!!

  • IbelieveNkarma2

I just learned about this story today. I know where have I been other than under a rock. I was duped by this Mark Long guy. I thought he was a bright and upcoming potential leader in DC. I volunteered for his at-large campaign only to learn how deeply in bed he was with Harris and Thompson, he'll, I was paid with a Details Inc. check. Don't overlook this uppity chauffeur. He is the weak link, something is definitely rotten in Denmark here.

  • Why DC Why?

We all now that politics can be one of the nastiest places on earth. It's a shame though that our nation's capital is riddled with this level of construction. Jeff Thompson has been greasing pockets for longer than I've been alive, so why is everyone acting surprised?
