What’s Behind ANC Commish Recall? Walmart!

It looks like ANC 4B04 Commissioner Doug Smith will soon be out of his unpaid job.

Smith is down 75-59 after a recall vote yesterday. There are still outstanding special and absentee ballots to be counted to make it official, but Smith says he's almost certainly a goner.

So why did a lowly ANC commissioner get the boot?

The Brightwoodian reports that John Beverly, the president of Concerned Citizens of Brightwood East, spearheaded the recall effort because of Smith's "lack of communication with residents" and "lack of involvement" in community affairs.

But Smith says those are "just totally untrue statements" and that he's never missed an ANC meeting. He was elected as ANC treasurer twice, and he chaired a special committee on Walmart issues. He says it's that last issue, the massive big box store that plans to open up a shop on Georgia Avenue, that likely cost him the gig.

Smith says it's his feeling that a number of people voted to boot him from office because he's not dead set against the store coming to the community.

"A lot of people wanted me to be anti-Walmart, I just wasn't," Smith says.  "I wasn't angry enough at Walmart."

Maybe he is now!

So-called "Community Activists" rarely stop Wal-Marts because their arguments are often silly. It's sad that this dedicated public servant was ousted by radical activists.

    That's some hard-hitting journalism Suderman.

Going to an ANC4B meeting is not a pretty sight. It's one thing for ANC's to disagree but some of them are just down right disagreeable. That trickles right down to the tone of the audience. It's always a guaranteed, tense, hostile environment. I can understand the concern that the immediate neighborhood feels but I disagree with some of the ways used to express their concern. What I do know is that when Walmart opens the doors every last one of them will be in there shopping.

FWIW, in my personal opinion I think Doug is anti-Walmart. I thought that the ANC4B set of committees to deal with the Walmart debacle worked pretty well and CM Smith did a great job in shepherding the process along. He did focus, I thought, on keeping the process moving and fair.

It's a shame that this happened, but I suppose he has to be the only fall guy, given that the Mayor, Council Chair, and most of the City Council were rolled up in support of Walmart before the company made their public announcements in Nov. 2010.

It's easy to lash out against Doug rather than the Mayor.

Sorry that's not CM, but "ANC Commissioner" Smith.

Let's get rid of Alex "Thief'Padro, Rachelle "Stalker" Nigro and Kevin "Invisible" Chapple out of ANC 2-C which will be 6-C in November.

These three useless bastards are all about taking money from the community and keeping the community in the dark.

In response to candycane1, I live a few blocks from the proposed Georgia Avenue Walmart and I will NOT shop there. The products at Walmart are inferior. I will continue to shop as I always have in Takoma Park, MD at Now & Then, Magic Carpet and the TPSS co-op.
