Good afternoon, sweet readers! LL can't believe Courtney got a rose last night. What is Ben thinking?! News time:

Sulaimon B-Roll: Man, LL is hurting for fresh news today. NBC4's Tom Sherwood uses the slow news day to recap the current extra curricular problems of Mayor Vince Gray (complete with b-roll of Sulaimon Brown) and Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown before asking whether those issues may hinder the District's push for budget autonomy/voting rights/statehood. Also, Brown tells Sherwood "he has no knowledge of the status of the federal probe or whether a grand jury is reviewing any evidence." (LL reported yesterday that a grand jury has, indeed, been empaneled in the Brown case and has started hearing testimony from witnesses.)

AFTER THE JUMP: Best Friends; Tweeter of the Day; Charter Up...

Best Friends: What do President Barack Obama and California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa have in common? They both support granting the District budget autonomy. Interestingly enough, Issa appears to care a great deal more.

Tweeter of the Day Award: WTOP's Mark Segraves is tearing it up on Twitter this morning, as he stakes out the D.C. Council's retreat at the convention center. "DC Council holding closed door meeting to discuss open government. ... Council staff and security have now been called as @tomsherwood and this reporter try to enter meeting. ... Marion Barry leaving meeting to go to bathroom tells @tomsherwood "I got to pee, you want to take a shot of that?" ... Council Chair Brown and other CMs parked in bus zone by convention center. ... @kwamebrowndc explains the cost to taxpayers is zero because convention center donates rooms and food. ... @kwamebrowndc staff says cost to taxpayers is actually $1,500 not zero as Brown stated. ... @kwamebrowndc came out of meeting to complain about tweets. Says the cost for convention center is zero, $1500 is for a meeting facilitator."

The Mayor's issues wouldn't be an issue with the Congress unless reporters like Sherwood are bored and keep repeating the same old thing when there is nothing new to report. I don't suggest that reporters should be flacks for the District but it would behoove them to be fair and constantly repeating old news when there is nothing new they want to report is not being fair.

How about reporting on the positive meetings the City had with the bond agencies in New York. Or maybe reporting on the Council races that are coming up. Or maybe talking about some small business success or even talking about Valentine's Day. Interview some of the thousands of young professionals who have moved into the District because it is such a great place to live. Interview the folks at MetroTeen AIDS and ask them about their new programs or follow some of the successes of Whitman Walker Health and how the number of new AIDS cases is declining in the District for the firt time in years.

  • Drez

I don't suggest that reporters should be flacks...
    Right. That's your job.
That there is an open grand jury investigation into Mayor Gray certainly warrants mentioning given that we yesterday learned that there is also an open grand jury investigation of Chair Brown.
From there it's entirely reasonable to explore whether and how having our two top elected officials under federal grand jury investigation might impact how we are perceived as a city.

Or, you know, we can just bury our heads in the sand.

  • Typical DC BS

Neither Mayor Gray's or Kwame's legal issues have ANY impact on the DC battle for budget autonomy/voting rights/statehood. DC will NOT get any of those issues resolved in the near future.

Congress is more than happy with the current state of affairs. Neither the Democrats or Republicans in Congress consider DC worthy of expending political capital to make DC residents masters of their city. Congress wants to be able to step in and meddle whenever they want to.

  • SEis4ME

Leave it up to Drez to think that a "story" in which the author himself admits that it's a slow news day and he's "looking" for news, really is an IMPORTANT story because someone on the city council is also under investigation.

As peter stated, there isn't anything new here and the article talks about how this is a recap of old news. Yet, as usual, since the story is about Gray, Drez thinks it's akin to burying our heads in the sand if we point out the same thing as Alan.

We get it. Kwame Brown = Vincent Gray. When that's the starting point, it's no wonder why you're always searching for the next Gray story.

    Tomorrow's news:

    Drunk Driver hits local pedestrian.

    Drez's spin:

This accident is akin to Gray's seemingly haphazard way of management.

  • Drez

So I guess in One City it's not at all remarkable that both the Mayor and the Council Chair are targets of a Federal Grand Jury investigations.
    Wow. Talk about managing expectations!

  • SEis4ME

Nope, it's just in your world, Gray and Brown are synonymous and it's beginning to become quite evident why that's so.

And it's certainly not because they're both under investigation because you've had this same meme since before there was any talk of an investigation.

  • LastStop

Whether we like it or not, the District is ONE CITY. And not a very big one at that. We may as well get along. I'm a carpetbagger so it really doesn't make me any difference.

  • Holdadice

@LastStop: And a very astute carpetbagger at that. Except I think it does make a difference to you. Why else would you bother to wax so eloquently?

  • Drez

    Look, SEIs4ME
There's substantial evidence that they're both crooks. That's on them not me.
And you can make any lame excuses you want, or impute whatever you want into my statements. That's on you, not me.
See, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you or i think. These grand juries aren't investigating SEIs4ME or Drez, they're investigating Chair Brown and Mayor Gray.

The District has sold out low income people get ready to move your family out of Washinton DC because. DC is being geared for high income people and the rich.

  • michael

The writing is on the wall poor people will always be screwed and pushed out.

  • michael

If you have five mouths to feed and you got one of DC camara tickets you would probaly have to cut down on your kids food for that month. Only the well off can survive in DC if you are low income you may as well get out now or u will be ran out just like the indians. DC should be shame and its all about money they r ripping off the working people. and if you have family comeing in to DC you better warned them good or the will be going back home only to find a mail box full of DC tickets

  • Truth hurts

I predict that current crop of DC elected pols will set a record for the most indictments in DC history.

  • SEis4ME

Look DREZ, you have proven time and time again that you have an unhealthy fascination with Vincent Gray and Kwame Brown, calling attention to one with the issue might not have one single thing to do with the other. That is YOUR issue. That is a FACT. You can spin it whichever way you like.

If you want people to stop believing that you don't have this unhealthy fascination with Gray and Brown then stop acting like a jilted lover.

    It's warmer outside today.
