Kwame Gets On Barry’s Case

Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown gently scolded Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry yesterday for sending out a press release from a staffer's email attacking one of his challengers in April's election.

News Channel 8's Bruce DePuyt got a copy of a letter Brown sent to Barry, asking him to refrain from possibly violating council rules by using "government resources to support of oppose any candidate for elected office." Barry's voicemail is full, and he couldn't be reached for comment.

The target of Barry's attack was Natalie Williams, his former spokeswoman who is now challenging him in the Democratic primary.

Soft rebukes among councilmembers aren't normally much to get excited about, but in this case the context is important. A week ago, a Clarus poll found that Brown was the most unpopular pol in the city (the poll didn't ask about ward-level councilmembers). According to the poll, Brown's approval rating was a paltry 23 percent while his disapproval rating was 57 percent, the highest of any pol surveyed and 4 points higher than Mayor Vince Gray's. Compare that to last August, when the same polling company found that 45 percent of respondents had a favorable view of Brown compared to only 17 percent who had an unfavorable view. That kind of nosedive in popularity (which we can safely assume is largely due to Navigatorgate, the alleged "criminal" activity surrounding Brown's 2008 re-election campaign, and an increasingly dysfunctional council,) probably explains why Brown would feel the need to scold Barry and how his letter quickly found its way into the public record.

Also worth noting is that LL just got a heads up from Brown's office that he plans on holding monthly press availabilities in the coming year to preview legislative meetings. Gray held these briefings semi-regularly when he was council chairman, but for whatever reason Brown has not. These new briefings also seem motivated by Brown's unpopularity. "We will continue to double up our efforts to make sure we communicate what’s being done in this city,” Brown told the Post last week in response to his dismal poll numbers.

LL seriously doubts that communication breakdowns are responsible for Brown's tanking poll numbers, but hey, the more press briefings, the better.

So both Kwame and Gray are blaming communications and the media for their unpopularity.
    Not a winning strategy.

  • SEis4ME

With residents like you, it will never be a winning strategy. But for those of us not wedded to the hip of utter ignorance, we fully understand the very crucial role the "media" has indeed played in their increased popularity.

    That much can't be disputed.

Oh wait, it can and you likely will dispute the idea that the medias incessant, fanatical focus on all things negative as it relates to those two.

Where are the glowing stories describing how the "mayor" is attracting more diversity to the city? Or how the "mayor" has overseen a historic drop in crime?

You won't find them - at least not to the degree they were under the previous administration

  • Drez

Right.... It's always everyone else's fault.
Look. The only reason Kwame ever got the chairship is that everyone else viewed him as too much of an incompetent lightweight to be any sort of threat. And a large portion of the foolishness in the council over the past year flows directly from that.
By the way, in the past several days I've read multiple media stories on the two items you mention, so obviously they've been covered. Oh, and I think you meant "decreased popularity", not "increased popularity.

  • Truth hurts

How dare the media to continue covering city pols. After all, it's almost 2012.

So is Colby King's current editorial.

In the new year, can Washington, DC finally rid itself of the Marion Barry hangover, once and for all? The man is a continuing embarassment to the 600,000 plus residents of this city and still a national joke. Once again, he's in trouble on paying his taxes, violating an agreement with the Feds. I hope the US Attorney has the stones to demand jail time or force Barry's resignation from the Council. Barry has to be neutralized before he runs again and then tries, North Korean style, to hand his Ward 8 seat over to his sorry son. And note to DC voting rights advocates: DC will never, ever get more rights as long as Barry's hand is anywhere near elective office in the District. For all concerned, it's past time to sweep Barry into history's dustbin.

@Burt-YOUR COMMENT STARTED OFF ALRIGHT BUT THEN IN NATURAL WHITEY FORM YOU TOOK THE POSITION THAT MOST OF YALL TAKE. WHICH IS LOCK THE BLACK MAN UP? TAKE HIS POWER AWAY THAT’LL TEACH ‘EM! IT’S THIS POSITION THAT WILL CONTINUE TO PROPELL MAYOR BARRY BACK INTO WARD 8’S COUNCILMAN CHAIR. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT IF THIS CITY WAS PRODOMINATELY WHITE THE CITY WOULD HAVE COMPLETE AUTONOMY AS IT RELATES TO CITY AFFAIRS AND SPENDING ITS OWN MONEY.

SO LETS BE REAL! THE REPUBLICANS (WHITE MEN) HAVE LONG TOOK THE POSITION ABOUT THE SCOPE OF THE FEDERAL GOV’T IN LOCAL AFFAIRS AS INVASIVE AND INTRUSIVE BUT YET THEY NEVER AQUIESCED TO THE BLACK ELECTED OFFICIALS OF WASHINGTON, D.C.? THE SORRY BAMMAS REVERTED BACK TO THAT SLAVE MASTER MENTALITY THAT MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE POWER. YO Burt FEAR COMES IN ALL FORMS AND IT’S BECOMING EVIDENTLY CLEAR THAT THOSE WHITE MEN ARE TRULY SCARED.

IS MAYOR BARRY AN EMBARRASMENT AND NAT’L JOKE? YES! BUT HE IS OUR EMABARRASMENT AND JOKE. SO FUCK YOU AND THOSE THAT AGREE WITH YOU. LEAVE HIM ALONE AND LET HIM BOW OUT ON HIS OWN. HE HAS DONE MORE GOOD THAN HARM WHICH I CAN NOT SAY FOR THE FOLKS OF YOUR ILK!

I OFTEN WONDER WHAT IF A BLACK MAN WAS GOVENOR OF ALL 50 STATES, WAS THE MAJORITY RACE IN CONGRESS AND WAS PRESIDENT. HOW WOULD YOUR WHITE ASSES EXPRESS YOURSELF THEN? HUH? THE CAUCASOID/ARYAN IS DONE AND IS BEING PHASED OUT LIKE THE DODO BIRDS THEY ARE. HEY DUM-DUM WHEN YOU SWEEP DUST ITS PARTICLES STILL REMAINS OR BECOME AIRBOURNE BUT YALL SORRY LAZY ASSES WOULDN’T KNOW THAT!

The more Whites talk about Marion the more the black community will protect him.I am not a fan blacks their first jobs and now blacks are fired on a regular bases. First the teachers for budget problems that later on we found out were made up by Rhee. Then others were fired for impact that was not piloted first. It was used with a few months training and they fired more teacher. All this was done under the name of education Rhee form. Most of would like to see real educational reform in the city and other reforms without some more of us appearing in the unemployment line. I have not missed the whites that were not here in the past forty years. I do not like the racism that they bring to the table. Obama gave us hope that things had really changed but I see the racism every time I read one of these blogs. Fenty was just as crooked as the current to live crew on the council he just did the bidding of the new whites that moved her who care very little about the poor civil rights and other agenda that this community has always cared about.

    Noodlez and Leeshato,

Anthony Williams was the best mayor since the Home Rule Act. Bring him back and send Barry packing (preferably to Federal prison for a good long time). Nuff said.

  • Mrs. Politics DC

Since 1999, can anyone tell me what Barry has done other than ban single beer sales? Please go walk down the street in Barry's own neighborhood and tell me he is effective. Yes, he started the Summer Youth Jobs, what 20 years ago. He taught people to have their hand out rather then empower them via "real" career training and going to college. DC is one of the few jurisdictions that allows persons to stay on TANF after five years, why??? Why not have TANF recipients use TAPIT to pay for training for careers that will not be obsolete in a few years or eureka, go to college. Ward 8, has on the highest illiteracy rates, unemployment rates, and largest # of children living in poverty. But hey, if attend all parents teacher conferences, you get a turkey. Than again, don't give parents initiatives to become mote involved in their kid's school, especially not in election. What will the people think?

KWAME BROWN IS NEXT. They gonna get his lying, stealing behind also. But it interesting how white politicans LIE, STEAL, MURDER, PAY TERRIORIST, and start wars with NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, and no one calls them an embarrassment. And folks say Racism is gone. Yeah, OK!
