Poll: Adrian Fenty (Or Anthony Williams) Would Beat Vince Gray

`

The last time D.C. heard from Adrian Fenty in an official capacity, he was finishing 37th in the "elite male" category at the D.C. Triathlon in June. (Which, come to think of it, is more or less what he was up to for much of his term as mayor.) If a new poll by Clarus Research Group is right, though, Fenty nostalgia is in full swing in the District.

The poll, released Thursday, showed Fenty would beat Mayor Vince Gray easily if a rematch of their 2010 primary was held now; Fenty, who lost his bid for a nomination for another term by 53 percent to 46 percent, would beat Gray 48-33 among Democratic primary voters today. (Among all voters, which includes Republicans and independents, Fenty would win 51-30.) The racial dynamic that ran through last year's election, though, persists: Gray would beat Fenty 45-31 among black voters, while Fenty would win 82-10 among whites.

But Fenty doesn't actually seem interested in running again. "I'm not sure if personally I would have gotten more out of" winning another term, he told the Huffington Post in September. Which is why another question the Clarus Group asked was even more interesting.

Former Mayor Anthony Williams, whose name does occasionally come up as a potential candidate to return to office, would also beat Gray, by a 47-32 margin among Democrats, the poll found. Like Fenty, Williams is more popular among white voters than black voters; unlike Fenty, Williams' hypothetical lead doesn't increase quite as much if Republicans get rolled into the sample.

The bottom line in the survey's findings, though, isn't really news: Incumbent politicians in D.C. these days aren't very popular.

The poll found Gray's approval rating among Democrats was only 34 percent, which is actually up from the 31 percent he recorded in a March Clarus poll. But 53 percent of Democrats disapproved of Gray's job performance, compared to 30 percent in March. At 48 percent, a plurality, but not a majority, of black voters—Gray's base—approved of his job performance.

“The mayor has never defined his mayoralty,” said Clarus president Ron Faucheux. “News stories about cronyism and criminal investigations have framed his first year in office. His ratings, and those of the [D.C. Council], are suffering from a cloud of uneasiness that hangs over city politics.”

Only 30 percent of voters approved of the D.C. Council's job performance, with 55 percent disapproving. Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown, meanwhile, the worst poll numbers of any politician the survey asked about, with 26 percent approving and 57 percent disapproving.

The poll was taken Dec. 19-21 and sampled 500 self-identified registered voters. The margin of error was plus/minus 4.4 percent.

Complete ratings for a variety of local politicians are after the jump:

This article woke me up out of my sleep to make a comment. This poll is bullshit. The Council of the District of Columbia rating is about 9%. My question, how did nappy headed Eleanor Holmes-Norton get a rating of 77%? Most D.C. voters I know hate this loud mouth angry woman. I don't see Ward 7 Pigs Feet Alexander on the list. I wouldn't vote for Fenty, Gray, or Williams again. All politicians are lairs, corrupt, and self serving. I hate Adrian Malik Fenty because this guy used blacks to get their votes and disrespected them once he became mayor. Vincent Gray looks bad and he's aged. The poor man doesn't seem to be dying his hair anymore and it's thinning. In closing, I hate Miss Catania and I would vote for the Devil, before voting for Miss Catania.

  • Southeast Ken

P.S. I would vote for Charlie Sheen if he ran for D.C. mayor. Charlie Sheen rocks! Charlie couldn't do any worse than these circus clowns sitting in the Wilson Building.

What is Kwame's I.Q.? Ward 2 D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans is not on the list, but I truly believe, he and Miss Catania are redneck white racist from Missouri and Pa.

  • Blevins

Uh no kidding, Alan. At this point nearly anyone could swoop in and defeat Vince - his administration has been a disaster of the most predictable variety. Of course, the election isn't coming up anytime soon, so Vince will simply do his best to hang on before riding off into the sunset once his term expires. Highly doubt he has the chutzpah to run for re-election, but you never know.

  • Sarah

Let's hope that Mayor One-City becomes Mayor One-Term!

  • Sarah

    @Southeast Ken:

"P.S. I would vote for Charlie Sheen if he ran for D.C. mayor. Charlie Sheen rocks! Charlie couldn't do any worse than these circus clowns sitting in the Wilson Building."

And Charlie Sheen already is used to having an MPD escort...

  • Truth hurts

    Duh!!

  • Southeast Ken

    LOL@Sarah

Charlie and his MPD escort. At least he's getting his own series on FX. Charlie still rocks.

  • SEis4ME

Don't see anything surprising here. Most especially, the large number of whites who wouldn't support Gray.

  • sinclair skinner

whats sad about all this corruption is that a new generation thinks that politics and corruption is synonymous. we will have more young politicians think being a good liar is essential to beinng a good politician.

  • Cat Like

Since everybody is providing comments like a Tea Party convention, I will be pragmatic.

DC is a Tale of Two Cities, a very wealthy and powerful one and a poor struggling divide, a national political scene and a local ward operations. Its Whites who moved here from the Midwest and Blacks who has always lived here

And to be mayor you have to embrace both rolls.

Fenty was only interested in one. Guess which and Gray is not a politician and alienating both equally.

    It is early yet.

  • StrangeFruit

My assumption that the pollsters' "Do Not Call List" included Wards 7, 8 and certain zip codes in Wards 1, 4 and 5 has been validated via Fenty's so-called increased approval rating amongst Blacks and Kay Henderson's 51% approval rate. GIMME A FREAKIN BREAK!

The residents of Wards 3, 6 and 2 fed into The Washington Post's manufactured Rhee-form propaganda, which—nationally--has been proven to be a chimera. Therefore, the folks that gave Kay Henderson a 51% approval rate are the same drones who supported Rhee and didn't vote for Gray in 2010.

This poll is neither newsworthy nor new information.

Clarus Research Group should have concluded from Fenty’s defeat that you can’t piss on DC’ Black population and try to tell us it’s raining.

Our eyes aren’t wide shut and we know exactly what’s up, including with DC’s race-baiting, bias media.

  • Petworthy

Sorry Strange, but a crappy mayor is a crappy mayor. Fenty got a lot done, but didn't make happy face kissy noises for anyone and it cost him.
Gray is incompetent and weak, his council evil, and things are worse than they were last year.

    Oh,it's raining.

  • Daddy Grace Fish Sandwich

@Petworthy, you are so wrong. Adrian M. Fenty is the Anti Christ.

  • Daddy Grace Fish Sandwich

P.S. Former Dictator Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is Godless. This is what the black maid in the movie, 'The Help' said to the white woman. I've heard, the man is allegedly an Atheist.

  • Really?

Let’s not marginalized the myriad of issues that Fenty had to just "happy face kissy noises". It aint true! And please provide an example of how things are "worse than last year"?

Did you trash get picked up this week?

  • Blevins

@Really? - Same old canards, I see. How about getting a new trick in 2012?

Yes, my trash was picked up this week. Same as it was under Fenty and Williams. Are we expecting that little of Vince? He's managed to keep existing city services functioning. Congrats. What's better than it was a year ago? Nothing.

Vince has no legislative agenda to speak of, nor has he ever verbalized a plan for his term - either the first two hundred days (his words) or beyond. Instead we have been treated to a comedy of errors by both the mayor and his staff, as his turnover rate attests to.

Since "last year", there are myriad investigations being conducted at every level of government, Vince still has not issued a statement on HTJ, and generally prefers to avoid leading. Awesome.

  • Truth hurts

Blevins, I must correct you here. Gray submitted pay raise legislation for top mayoral appointees. And his press shop lobbied in its support by posting comments on Co's site (albeit under fake screen names). How easily you forget.
And re Harry "f.... the kids" Thomas, Gray absolutely released a statement. Remember? Said he wasn't gonna call for his resignation. Get your facts straight!

  • noodlez

    PURE BULLSHIT!!!!

    ONLY 500 WERE POLLED?
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES THAT THOSE POLLED WERE WEST OF 16TH STREET?

MAD MIKE THREW ALL THE ONE CITY HATERS A BONE AND IN TYPICAL FASHION YALL SWARMED TO THE PILE OF SHIT LIKE FLIES.

    ALL YALL ARE COLD SUCKERS!

I SEE THE USUAL CAST IS HERE FALLING OFF OF FLENTY NUTS LIKE FLAKING DANDRUFF CLAIMING HE DID SHIT WHEN IN FACT THE ONLY THING HE DID WAS REVERSE THE CITY’S FINANCIAL GAINS THAT WERE MADE UNDER MAYOR WILLIAMS.

OH YEAH! I WAS JUST REMINDED OF THE ½ A MIL DOG SHIT PARK HE BUILT AND THE SOCCER FIELD THAT BEARS HIS NAME.

THE ONLY REASON WHITE FOLK LIKED FLENTY WAS DUE IN LARGE TO THE FACT THAT HE IS 50% CAUCASOID, HE NAMED WHITE FOLK AND NON-BLACKS TO ALL THE IMPORTANT DEPARTMENT HEADS AND HE CATERED TO THE MYOPIC LITTLE TWITS. I CAN’T IDENTIFY ANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT WERE MADE UNDER HIS FAILED ADMINISTRATION THAT BENEFITTED SOMEONE OTHER THAN A POLITICAL DEBT HE PAID.

ONE CITY! STILL SUPPORTING MAYOR GRAY 100% AND WAITING FOR THE POLLSTERS TO CALL.

  • Drez

At least it will soon be a new year.
Anyone see the latest on the widening HTJ probe?
    http://www.brooklandheartbeat.org/winter11_thomas.html
Its a very interesing story. Worth a read. It has some details I hadn't seen elsewhere.

  • Southeast Ken

LOL@Daddy Grace Fish Sandwich. Sorry Daddy Grace, I would never attend your church because I heard it was a cult. I love the beautiful Christmas decorations on the church's North Portal Estates home in Ward 4.

@Noodlez, you are correct. The Caucasians in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia preferred former King Fenty because his mother is Caucasian, making him 50% Caucasian. Blacks worst enemies are liberal white Democrats who think they know what's best for blacks. However, many of the Caucasians and gay Caucasian males moving into D.C. move from middle America. Many blacks they grew up around were poor, uneducated, and they (blacks) are still subjected to Jim Crow and are afraid of whites. There's a perception, white Democrats aren't racist and they love black people. During the mayoral campaign and reading racist comments regarding black D.C. residents on blogs like the Prince of Petworth, Washington Post, Washington City Paper, WTOP, Washington Times, white Republicans aren't the only racist. As I stated to some whites on here, I am not moving to Prince Georges County, Maryland. I am native born black Washingtonian in the old Freedmans Hospital and when die and hopefully go on to glory, I will still be buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Northeast Washington, D.C. We all have to reap what we have sowed on this earth in the end and we know what's truly in our hearts and minds in reference to other people.

    Merry Christmas to all!

  • NE John

How about my local fuk-ker Harry Thomas Jr.? How did he fare?

That's a good one by our little homegrown paper Drez. Turns out Team Thomas is just the tip of the iceberg. Over a million unaccounted for.

Have a hellish xmnas Thomas, lololololololol

  • NE John

SE Ken, I jhave a plot there too, lol. But, I think I now want my ashes used for fertilizer in the DC marijuana factories. Ashes to ashes, dust to loveboat

  • Southeast Ken

NE John, you and I can be neighbors at Mount Olivet Cemetery during our eternal rest. LOL We want have to worry about corrupt ass politicians like Ward 5 D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr.

  • StrangeFruit

I concur with noodlez and I wish the pollsters would call me, but I know my zip code will skew their calculated outcome, which is to advance the media's castration of Gray and have his mayorship hanging from a popular tree.

  • candycane1

I disagree that Fenty could come back and beat Gray. No way! Five months before the primary and no money was the situation when Gray announced his intention to run. People jumped on that bandwagon with one motivation, to get rid of Fenty. Fenty forgot who he worked for and he was fired. I didn't vote for him the first time because he was a nothing council member as well. No point in trying to bring that one back to life.

  • NE John

SE Ken, it is a comforting thought that we'd be taking up valuable space in DC for "eternity" because those spaces will soon run out and there are but a few cemeteries within the District borders.

Back to the story, this Gray/Fenty thing is getting scary, see this creation of the Abominable Dr. Phibes:

    http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/_dev/pubsys/images/20111221_vincegrayasbizarrofenty_notdm_345x365.jpg

    the horror of it all!

  • Really?

I'll get a new trick belvey boy when ya'll do.

It's X-mas and I'm going to enjoy my holiday. Happy Holiday folks!

  • One that cares

@ NE John. That was really clever and I had a good Santa like laugh at your Dr Phibes Frankenstein picture. Would love to see a morph of HTJ and PGC's Johnson.

  • Really Forward7

@Southeast Ken You have a plot at Mt Olivet??? You're another confused Black Roman Catholic just like Vince Gray. The Catholic church have been using you DC negroes for years. Don't think you'll be escaping the likes of Gray in hell...oh that's right, you catholics believe in pergatory.

  • http://iamdcdg.com David Gaines

"@ NE John. That was really clever and I had a good Santa like laugh at your Dr Phibes Frankenstein picture. Would love to see a morph of HTJ and PGC's Johnson."

Ditto. And I'd like to see a morph of "Southeast Ken" and "Really Forward7".

    Lighten up everyone, it's Christmas!

  • Truth hurts

Agree with the comments re nejohn's post and his morph. Just viewed the image. On one level, it's creepy, yet on another level (the spirit in which it was created), very funny. Life is too short to spend it on namecalling and hating. Best wishes to all commenters. I suspect that most of us are decent folks at heart.

  • NE John

Hey guys, for the record, I did not do that morphing photo. Someone associated with CP did, I believe. Merry Christmas!

Really Forward7, the Devil is a lie. You will end up in hell before I will. Yes, the Catholic Church is a racist institution, but it's no different from those of you that attend those ridiculous black churches where the preachers are the pimps and are the head of the cult. Have a Happy New Year, fool.

  • http://letschange.org Respected Citizens

None of these mayors are worthy for re-election and that's a fact. What this city should have done was put Leo Alexander in the office to stop the buddy buddy system.

  • http://Yahoo John Handcock

The way i sees it , its about blacks and whites in DC at the moment. The whites is trying every dirty trick in the book to get control of the chocolate city.
