IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Evans Gets Roasted, Sherwood Kills
  • Good morning sweet readers! Then leaf subsides to leaf. News time:

You've GOP To Be Kidding: Ronald Moten, former Mayor Adrian Fenty's surrogate TV debater, plans on joining the Republican Party today in advance of his campaign kick off tomorrow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The party switch will let Moten challenge whoever wins the Ward 7 Democratic April primary in November's general election, meaning that we'll have a whole year as Moten-the-council-candidate.  Moten tells the Post that he's "been a conservative the whole time" and the Republican Party is needed in local politics in order to restore balance to the force. As for tomorrow's cemetery kickoff, Moten has guaranteed LL that it'll be worth taking time out of a Saturday to attend. It had damn well better be.

AFTER THE JUMP: Can You Not Hear My Now; Chavous the Younger; Wanna Move...

Can You Not Hear Me Now: Mayor Vince Gray assured the public on Newstalk with Bruce DePuyt yesterday that we won't be hearing his voice on any federal wiretap. Is that because he knows sign language? No, it's because the mayor hasn't spoken to wired up mystery man and former campaign aide Howard Brooks this year ... so far.

Chavous the Younger: Kidney-disease-awareness Ward 7 Candidate Kevin B. Chavous gives an interview with the Afro. The 26-year-old on being 26: "I believe my age is an asset. At my age I have the opportunity to devote all of my time to Ward 7. I have the energy, vigor to attack things with aggression."

Wanna Move?: Council Chairman Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown is proposing to waive teacher evaluations for highly rated teachers who move to struggling schools. Why would that be an incentive to those teachers? Probably because it's harder to get a good ranking in a poorer school, which totally sounds fair, right?

Here's yet another example of a black man having a woeful lack of understanding of this country's major political parties history. It's true that African-Americans once mostly voted Republican. However, this were during the late 1860's all the way up to the early part of the 20th century when the Republican Party was considered the liberal party given its strong opposition to slavery and its support of the civil war. Conversely, during this period of time, most of the opposition to social equality for blacks came from the white segregationist who were Democrats. HOWEVER, this tide began to change much later when DEMOCRAT Franklin D. Roosevelt received over 70 percent of the black vote for President in 1936 after meeting with black leaders and promising to push for specific programs that would benefit African-Americans. Again, Harry Truman another Democrat secured nearly 80 percent of the black vote in 1948, which was due in part to his order to desegregate the armed services and his implementation of regulations prohibiting racial bias in federal employment. Yet another Democrat President Kennedy used the civil rights movement to define the Democrat party as a liberal party for years to come. And, President Lyndon Johnson who received a record 94 percent of the black vote signed perhaps the two most important pieces of legislation for blacks in American History- The 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act. Since that time, no Republican Presidential candidate has gotten more than 15 percent of the black vote. Thus, the notion that today’s Republican Party agenda is designed to do anything for African-Americans is just wishful thinking. In fact, much of the Republican Party’s agenda is now really designed to benefit big business at the expense of the middle class. And, that's why in this terrible economy African-Americans are the hardest hit. The national unemployment rate is 9 percent; however, for African-Americans it’s 17 percent. And, in Ward 7, the unemployment rate is over 20 percent. Yet, Moten has joined the party which believe that unemployed people are unemployed because they want to be unemployed. This is a helluva campaign message.

“What I want to know is who the heck is advising him? Spongebob square pants? How can he possibly think this is a good idea”?

      FENTY??

Can this possible get any funnier! Who kicks off a political campaign at a cemetery???? Why that would be the candidate who knows that his republican campaign, in Ward 7, of all places, is DOA (Dead on Arrival). Have to give this guy credit for efficiency. He can kick-off and bury this ridiculous thing all in the same place... saving gas and energy! Maybe the environmental voting bloc can appreciate this approach.....lollllll

UPDATE: Just got an email from the lawyer representing Mr. Spongbob Square Pants....his client categorically denies any involvement in this mess! And his client is prepared to file suit against anyone falsely accusing Mr. Pants of any involvement, what-so-ever, with republican candidate moten!!

    • Sponge Bob Squarepants

Hey, don't blame me! Mr. Crab is the only Republican I know.

    • Mr. Remember

All I am saying the party Moten wants to join is pretty heavily involved in scandalous behaviour. So you know that saying birds of a feather, usually flocked together.

      You better know this Moten!!!!

    • Southeast Ken

Tony, what makes you think the Democratic Party are friends of blacks? The Democratic Party have pimped black voters for over 40 years. Now, they take black voters for granted. However, the Republican Party isn't shit either. I don't believe in socialism, welfare, and hand outs. Too many people are depending on the government and want get off their lazy asses and work.

On the issue of Ron Moten, I would vote for an alien from out of space, before I vote for him.

    • Truth hurts

Tony's #5 post captures the Republican agenda these days.

    • Honest Abe

Ronald Moten is a sad lost individual. He has no direction and or purpose. He has no job and or skills. He seems to keep coming up with stunts like these to keep his name relevant. It's a shame that our tax dollars went into his pockets. Such a buffoon!

    • Charlie

Well, I see the OCF has Ron Moten listed as a Democrat.

Does he now have to register a new campaign committee? And return the contributions he has gotten so far? (HA!)

A press conference at a cemetary? IT's October so Trick or Treat!! Or could this be symbolic of campaign Dead on Arrival. Too funny.

    • Wendy Washington

Oh yeah, during the last election, that idiot Moten got just enough air time and ink to be drawn to the flame (just like a moth)! Now he wants to sniff behind Herman "GodAwful Pizza" Cain. Fenty really is a Republican in his heart. He knew his policies would not fly on a city-wide scale if he had become a Republican, er, Repugnicant.

Now Moten is still following some of Fenty's boneheaded thinking. WTH does he think, those 1515 Repugs in Ward 7 are going to put his ignorant ass over the top? In a largely Democratic ward?

One thing is clear -- Moten paid someone to write the op ed piece that the WaPo printed. Moten can barely string together a grammatically correct sentence when speaking. There is no way in hell, he wrote that article. Over here in Ward 5, I hesitate to laugh, because we have our own clown over here in Ring 2 of the three-ring circus.

    • VonniMediaMogul

Meanwhile as Peaceoholics' resources were taken away by Yvette Alexander the city's homicide rate has grown we still complain about paying $700k+ for homes and being crime ridden while no one does anything about it. Well he has been doing something about it since day one yet his declaration as a Republican is a problem?

    • Really?

Wow! "Resources" did we ever get a full account on the millions of District Taxpayer dollars that peacoholics spent as well as what "resources" were brought?

    • Really?

Oh and I see Allen is linking to a blogger who is trying to re-write the history of U street and the Reeves Ctr. with a post that is based on their feelings and not the facts.

    • AvaBlu

I thought the Woodlawn Cemetary was pretty innovative.
He spoke about resurrection and how we as citizens, can use our history to invoke the change needed today.
I guess if people want to make funny comments, and want to criticize then you can find some way to do that.
But if you look at the larger issue of what has been happening in the African-American community over time.
One thing that is certain, like Mr. Moten stated was that "no party has ever been perfect, and if we want change we always have to go after it and demand it".

So, sure if you want to focus on the small issue of party title, then go ahead it's America!

What I'm really concerned with is how many people refuse, or are scared (understandable) to really speak up on the lack of accountability of politicians. When we are the ones that elect them to office.

It's a huge problem when Ward7 has such a large unemployment rate as he states, and no one is really making any noise about this, besides Mr. Moten and some others. One thing is for certain no matter where we live..When you have large pockets of unemployment, and you think it doesn't affect "you". Huh, trust it will affect you when, soon enough someone who is hungry will try and rob you.

I know alot of people on this site also care about DC, and want to see Washingtonians referred to in a serious light. I'm just saying, why not open up and be willing listen to all candidates on the conversation around unemployment, and making sure our small businesses can survive in this economy!
