BREAKING: Sulaimon Brown Escorted Out of Office By Police

LL has heard from city officials that Sulaimon Brown, a failed mayoral candidate whose hiring Mayor Vince Gray defended yesterday, was escorted out of the Department of Health Care Finance this morning by police. Updates to follow.

UPDATE: The Gray administration confirms that Brown was escorted out by police. Sources tell LL the decision to "begin proceedings" to separate Brown from his $110,000-a-year District government job came from the administrative offices of the Health Care Finance Department.  The department's director, Wayne Turnage, is at the Wilson Building huddling with city officials. LL just saw him and his chief of staff, Talib Karim, heading into Councilmember David Catania's office. Catania chairs the D.C. Council's health committee, which oversees the department.

ANOTHER UPDATE! LL spoke with Turnage, who could not provide many details, citing personnel laws. "I met with Sulaimon Brown this morning to discuss his future at DHCF," Turnage says. He adds that Brown is on "administrative leave," but will not comment beyond that.

When asked about who made the decision to put him on leave—and who made the decision to hire the obscure former candidate in the first place—Turnage's answer was the same: "As director of DHCF, all decisions about personnel begin and end with me."

At this point, LL raised a skeptical eyebrow, since at a news conference yesterday, Gray said that Brown had sought out a job with the new administration and “we actually connected him with the Department of Health Care Finance.”

LoveLight, I agree. It is never a good strategy to defend a stupid action by saying that the preceding guy did it too...especially since the preceding guy was voted out....and especially when the current guy campaigned against these issues that are coming up on his watch. Any new administration is going to drop the ball on some issues. Happens all the time. The key is whether Gray and his people learn from this going forward. If we are still talking about this same type of crap in 2012, then we elected the wrong man.

I need a drink of Liqour folks. LOL

We are living in perilous times with corrupt politicians regardless of being Republican, Democrat, and Independent. How can we trust? It dare sure isn't lying ass corrupt politicians. Kwame Brown is an idiot. I am disappointed in Vincent Gray. I agree with Lovelight, this isn't about former King Fenty. Gray said during the campaign, he wouldn't do the same shit King Fenty did.

I am sorry Noodlez, I disagree with you on this brother. Two wrongs don't make it right.

Correction: Who can we trust? I sure isn't these lying ass corrupt politicians.

Wow! What in the world is going on? Shame! Shame!

I hope that this maddness STOP!

Others needs to be next......Ms. Whiting and your buddies children!

this has nothingf 2 do with mayor GRAY. this move was done by councilman D CATANIA,he was not gonna let MR S BROWN work anywhere near this office. he control that $2.5 BILLION Dollars. and mr BROWN strong nature would not work in that office. CATANIA control every dollar in that buget.

  • drez

I hear you and I'd be happy to join you in the drink, SE Ken.

@Southeast Ken-SO WHAT EXACTLY IS GRAY DOING WRONG? AND WHY THE DISAPPOINTMENT? UNTIL FOLK ARE TRUE TO THEMSELVES AND THEIR PERSONAL HANG UPS THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL WE WILL BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD.

SEE THAT’S WHAT THEY DO. THEY CHANGE THE GAME WHEN IT'S CONVENIENT FOR THEM. THEY CONSTANTLY COMPARE GRAY TO BARRY BUT WHEN GRAY IS COMPARED TO FENTY THEN IT’S NOT RELAVENT.

"People need to chill on the Fenty did this and that defense. This isn't about Fenty, as all of the Gray supporters LOVED to point out after he lost. You told the Fenty voters to stop talking about him, and you all need to do the same thing. We are just over a month into this man's administration and we are already dealing with needless controversies that recall a dark day in this city's history"-TOTAL CONTRADICTORY AND A OXYMORONIC STATEMENT.

SEE HERE IS WHERE IDIOTS LIKE THE PERSON WHO MADE THE COMMENT ARE TOTALLY LOST. FENTY WAS VOTED OUT PARTIALLY BECAUSE HIS ADMINISTRTAION CONSISTANTLY OPERATED IN A SHROUD WHILE CONDUCTING THE CITY'S BUSINESS. YOU WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOWN ABOUT ANY OF THIS IF IT WAS A YEAR AGO. YALL SO CAUGHT UP ON SILLY SULAI AND HIS SHANNAGANS THAT YOU DONT SEE THAT AN EXECUTIVE DECISION BEING MADE BECAUSE YOU'VE BEEN DEPRIVED FOR THE PAST 4 YRS

  • Really?

noodlez said SEE THAT’S WHAT THEY DO. THEY CHANGE THE GAME WHEN IT'S CONVENIENT FOR THEM. THEY CONSTANTLY COMPARE GRAY TO BARRY BUT WHEN GRAY IS COMPARED TO FENTY THEN IT’S NOT RELAVENT.

Now let the church say AMEN!

No defending Gray on this one. He fucked up. Hopefully, this attention will cause Gray to stop and considerate these appointees/referrals more closely. Not another 4 years of shadiness please...

    THE KING IS DEAD.

    LONG LIVE THE KING.

We ain't been deprived of nothin. We get what we vote for. Fenty, Gray, Barry... we get what we get.

I miss Anthony Williams every day. Even with the stupid baseball park - at least with Williams and Cropp I had some respect for my leaders and some confidence in their abilities to lead.

    THE KING IS DEAD.

    LONG LIVE THE KING.

  • LoveLight

Noodlez: Nothing I said is contradictory. I said talking about Fenty is useless in this, and it is - or from what the Gray supporters have said it should be, right? Because according to you this is a new day, King Fenty is gone, and it is all about Gray. Correct? Is that not what everybody said in the afterglow of his win? So since you all love Gray so much, call him on his crap and stop bringing up Fenty. Hold his feet to the fire. And we have every right to compare him to Barry and the like because this wreaks of some old school DC foolishness. Just call it what it is and stop trying to let him skate on the premise of it is happening out in the open. The point everyone is trying to make is that based on the CAMPAIGN he ran it should not be happening period. That's the bottom line. As someone said everyone makes mistakes early on but this is sloppy and unacceptable politics - especially so soon in the game. There is now way to defend any of this at all.

  • SEis4ME

Adrian, what exactly would you be defending Gray against?

That he should have forbidden his administration from hiring Brown?

And that's your reason for thinking he fucked up?

I'm all for holding Gray accountable. But at some point, his supporters will have to grow a damn spine and stop trying to "rise above" it all. This is the same shyt that happened to Obama. He campaigned on bringing "change" to Washington and ended up not being criticized by his own supporters for vacationing. His wife was criticized for vacationing by his own whiny ass supporters. And unlike his predecessors, he ended up using his own money to redecorate the oval office.

Contrary to this developing meme, what previous Mayors did is absolutely relevant to this discussion and it doesn't start and end with Fenty. Williams didn't hire people he knew? Who really thinks that?

Sorry Adrian but you are NOT being a better man by saying that he fucked up by doing what all politicians do. You don't have to like it. But we're talking about hires NOT stealing money or some other level of tomfoolery.

Alan has a hard-on for Gray which explains the onslaught of stories regarding perceived missteps by Gray. This is the same person who brought us the infamous Rueben Charles story.

And after the fakemeout backlash from Gray's own supporters, what is Charles he doing nowadays? Haven't heard much about him as of late.

  • Terry Miller

All of these different things that are being bandied around and being described as being "corruption" don't merit that term.

Take D.C. FIre and EMS, for example, Fenty appointed Brian Lee as interim Fire/EMS Chief. He does not have an EMT background. Brian Lee then selected an operations chief who had NEVER been a firefighting deputy (which explains why there were all those out of control fires). He then selected Dennis Rubin as Fire Chief, who also had no background in EMS. Dennis Rubin then created a new high level position for Brian Lee, at a salary of around $140,000 a year. And then Rubin claimed that Brian Lee and the operations chief were career service (to get around the pesky requirement that excepted service people have to live in the city." All these things happened within the first three months of Fenty's term. These overpaid, inexperienced people stayed in their positions for four years and nobody questioned it. The Washington Post didn't write about it. Even though it was brought to their attention.

I am not saying that Gray should get a pass on this, I am just saying that the Washington Post gave Adrian Fenty a four year honeymoon, while they left Vince Gray at the alter. Just sayin.

  • SEis4ME

Lovelight, thanks for showing your true colors.

You don't want anyone to compare what Gray did to Fenty, the previous mayor. Yet, you have the audacity to go back to the Clinton years and compare Gray to the mayor during that time.

Please. This is about as bullshyt as logic can be.

Don't talk about the previous mayor. Let's go back two previous mayors. Yeah, that's a good and fair comparison.

  • Really?

Lovelight please stop painting "all gray" supporters with this broad brush.

Here's my beef. Has the man stumbled (This includes K.Brown).

    Yeah!

But the media gave Fenty 2 and half years off Fuck-ups before the reporting of the Fuck-ups were even discussed. And even when they were discussed it was as if they were ok.

Now one month out we have them writing post, after post, after post.

Second, the media was soooo deprived because Fenty stonewalled the media’s and DC Citizens’ FOIA request that one can only image what mistakes and mishaps and appointments and salaries occurred during his tenure as mayor. At the very least Brown and Gray are allowing you...yes you DC Citizens to view the thier political actions.

Oh if Fenty would have been that mature how they may have saved his career.

Well lovelight I will expect you to never ever mention Barry in any of your post.

  • LoveLight

This is getting circular so I am gonna leave it alone. The point is you wanted hoodrich leadership that was "down" and you got it. Ask and you shall receive. Find 101 ways to justify his drama but he's simply not cutting the mustard - and we are only six weeks in!

  • Rake

So, Really, while you believe that Vince and Kwame have "stumbled", the media shouldn't report on these things because the media gave Gray's predecessor a "honeymoon" of sorts? And we DC voters should be encouraged by Vince and Kwame's ridiculous show because under their predecessor we might not have known about it??

Most curious, this transitive property of blame shifting you attempt.

Simply, Really, have Vince (and Kwame, if you like) measured up to your expectations of THEM, not your expectations relative to predecessors? Do tell.

One City, with continual mistakes and gaffes for all.

  • Really?

Rake...in my previous post I've said it's the continual post, after post, after post that's the issue.

But, I know my comments could have gotten lost because...well there have been so many post about the same subject matter.

I've had no problem saying that Gray and Kwame have made mistakes, but report like did with Fenty (one or two stories at the most), not eight or nine in row.

Lastly, it is most appreciated if instead on using code words such as "hoodrich" which means what lovelight?

Just go ahead and say it!

Rake, it's been what maybe 2months. I will allow them more time before I judge them. I did for Fenty and will afford them the same amount of time.

    Can you do the same?

  • Really?

Maybe the best thing would be for Gray (actually the political types one or two levels down who do the actual managing) to clean up their act, and then there would be no need to ask for a grace period.
For someone who ran on process, integrity, character, etc, this would seem the obvious choice.

Really, hoodrich isn't a codeword. Please. You know exactly what I am saying. Hoodrich is leasing expensive SUVs on the city's dime when your personal finances are screwed up. Hoodrich is everything we have seen in the last few days. Play coy if you want but it is what it is.

  • Chrystal Johnson

    City Paper staffers:

I encourage you to dig deeper into the past of Mr. Sulaimon Brown. There's certainly a trail of restraining orders, arrests, etc. that should have been brought to light prior to this moment.

While I don't fault the Gray Administration, I would say that they did not excercise due diligence in vetting Mr. Brown. Based on his "emotional breakdown" during Gray's conference, Mr. Brown is neither stable nor competent to serve the public.

    Ayy JASON, I know you!

You're that little snotty nosed white kid who takes his ball when not chosen, questions a persons PATRIOTISM because they won't/don't drink the FOOL AID, anything not in favor of, beneficial to or in support of WHITE PRIVILEGE is worthless, newsflash homey, BLACKS MADE THIS COUNTRY "civil"!

As far as the fire chief, there was NO and I mean ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER CANDIDATE more ready, charismatic, intelligent, KNOWLEDGEABLE or balanced to head up DC Fire and EMS!

DC tried a WHITE chief in ruben and look what we got for it, lawsuits, low morale and a racial divide so thick you could plug the NILE!

PICK and choose your battles and words wisely my little white friend, sad that race still permeates the minds of the SIMPE!

We just got out of a bad 4 year abusive union that saw the DC residents force fed lies, hate, gentrification, classism, FRAUD, incompetence, cronyism and exclusion for more than enough to be comfortable with; give INCLUSION a chance my friend, try it, you might like it!

  • tony

Mayor Gray is trying his best to spread the economic wealth in this city which has for so many years been tilted towards the whites. And, for this reason and this reason alone, he is now being attacked. I have said time and time again, the number function of a black politician is to use his/her political power to gain economic power for his/her people. White politicians have used their political clout to enriched their friends, family and business contacts since the beginning of time. In fact, every politician in this country also uses his/her power to uplift his/her people. When an Irishman is elected, he hires other Irish people. When a Latino get elected he hires other Latinos. When a gay person get elected he hires other gays. And, this practice has been in existence since the beginning of time.Specifically, white folks have used this tactic to almost perfection. However, when a black politician attempts to give a black person a piece of the pie, then we have this huge scandal. He is attacked as being crony or corrupt. FINALLY, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME IN THIS CITY HAS A WHITE POLITICIAN BEEN CASTIGATED LIKE MAYOR GRAY, CHAIRMAN BROWN, COUNCILMAN THOMAS, OR MARION BARRY HAVE BEEN. And, all of them are black. I mean, where is the outrage over Councilmember Jim Graham conduct, a man who office was raided by the FBI and who Chief of Staff plead guilty to bribery and other charges. Where is the outrage over Jack Evans cozy and suspect relationships with the business community which has earned him several reprimands from the authority. Where in the hell is the outrage over Catania's efforts to award non-competitive bid contracts worth millions to his pet projects.Sadly, too many blacks abandon their own leaders over foolishness. Black people should asked themselves what kind of representation they received in this city and country when white people were in charge. It was called Jim Crow. It was called segregated schools. It was called being employed in the city government as a trash collector. It was called second class citizenship. It was called being the victims of the worst treatment humanity could imagine.

  • Rake

seDCdude, if race permeates the minds of the simple, you by your own words have shown yourself to be the most simple of all.

Again, if this constitutes the ONE CITY base, we are in a heap more trouble than I thought.

  • Adrian Bent-Me

SEis4ME- maybe you should stay in SE. You fucking idiot, my post said that I can't defend Gray and I have no intentions of trying to do so. He fucked up. What else do you want me to say. He did everything that I had hoped he wouldn't do. He hired cronies with little justification and very vague explanations when confronted. This isn't who I expected him to be. How the fuck are you going to criticize these comments as me someway defending Gray. I can't say it any differently you douche.

Last week was a circus at the Wilson Building staring Kwame Brown as the lead actor. Kwame showed his immaturity, ignorance, and his being a materialistic human being.

Kwame Brown shouldn't have been voted in as the DC Council Chair, but disgusted DC voters like myself didn't have a great selection to choose from. It was between the idiot Kwame and the other pimp, former Ward 5 DC Councilmember Vincent Orange.

I am sick of all of the idiots sitting inside the Wilson Building. Mayor Vincent Gray is a big disappointment in my and other DC voters eyes, but we were glad to get rid of the former dictator Adrian Malik Fenty. Now we are stuck with another politician not caring about his constituents. It's all about me, me, me, with most politicians.

DC voters should take to the streets like the people in Egypt and over throw the Wilson Building and run Vincent Gray, Kwame Brown, Jim Graham, Jack Evans, Mary Cheh, Muriel Bowser, Harry Thomas Jr., Tommy Wells, Yvette Alexander, Marion Barry, Phil Mendelson, David Catania, Michael Brown, and Sekou Biddle out of the Wilson Building.

City Paper, where was your outrage when Fenty doled out nearly $15 million in bonuses to select officials, and most of the bonuses went to lawyers under Attorney General Peter Nickles--Fenty's Godfather.

Here's the article from the Washington Examiner:
    -----------------------------------------------

Council lashes Fenty over "questionable" bonuses
    By: BILL MYERS
    Examiner Staff Writer
    December 15, 2009

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray, left, said bonuses given out recently by Mayor Adrian Fenty, right, were “highly questionable given the depressed economy.”

D.C. leaders reacted with outrage to news that the Fenty administration has continued to lavish awards on favored employees despite a law banning the practice.

Fenty has doled out nearly $15 million to select officials, including some $565,000 given out since October. The council passed a law this year forbidding the city to hand out any more cash perks after the start of fiscal 2010, which began Oct. 1.

Council Chairman Vince Gray said the bonuses were "highly questionable given the depressed economy."

"The Council imposed its own prohibition for [fiscal 20]09 bonuses to send the message of the need to do without them in this fiscal climate when people are being laid off, services are being cut, and residents are making sacrifices," he wrote in an e-mail to The Examiner.

More than one out of every 10 District residents is out of work, government statistics show. The Fenty administration has faced nine-digit budget gaps and has been slicing staff by the hundreds, claiming that it simply can't afford workers.

Councilman Kwame Brown, D-at large, called the bonuses "a true sign of poor leadership."

"We must do better," Brown wrote in an e-mail.

Most of the post-October bonuses were less than $3,000. But D.C. retirement board executive Eric Stanchfield was given nearly $22,000 last month. Finance office executive Abdi Mohamed Mohamed was given $10,000 in October.

October surprises? Some bonuses given to city workers after ban took effect:

» Eric Stanchfield, retirement board, $21,997 on Nov. 27

» Abdi Mohamed Mohamed, finance office, $10,000 on Oct. 23

» Shirley Lanier, tax office, $5,000 on Oct. 30

» Aniema Udofa, finance and resource management office, $5,000 on Oct. 30

Stanchfield didn't respond to calls for comment. Finance office spokesman David Umansky insisted that The Examiner file a Freedom of Information Act request before he'd discuss Mohamed's bonus.

Most of the bonuses paid after October went to lawyers under Attorney General Peter Nickles.

He defended the payouts on Monday, saying that most of them were obligated under a union contract and that the personnel evaluations for the team were completed earlier this year -- for performance in 2008 -- but the payments weren't disbursed until after October.

That wasn't enough to assuage Councilwoman Mary Cheh, D-Ward 3, who wrote letters to Nickles, as well as city Finance Officer Natwar Gandhi and City Administrator Neil Albert. She called the bonuses "troubling" and demanded an explanation within two weeks.

Councilman Phil Mendelson, D-at large, said the bonuses were "embarrassing."

"To see somebody who already has a big salary getting a fat bonus on top and then turning around and [firing] employees is a bad picture," he said.

Hello, guys! I was surprised to hear the news. I always wonder what is the reason for a powerful man to be arrested. It is highly probable that we, common readers, will never know the whole truth.
