UMC Blood Feud

If you missed it, LL's column this week is on businessman George Chopivsky's efforts to convince city leaders to sell him Ward 8's United Medical Center over the strenuous objections of Councilmember David Catania.

As usual, not everything fit so here are a couple of tidbits that didn't make the cut:

First, Catania got an MRI on his shoulder done at the hospital, making him probably the only person in the world who has been an invited guest to George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford and sought medical help at the long-troubled UMC. That's just a small piece of evidence as to how deeply invested Catania is in seeing UMC succeed.

"This is personal to me, it is a crusade," he told LL, dismissing critisim that's floating around that he's too emotionally invested. "So what, we keep our promises. Why is that a bad thing?"

Also worth noting, Chopivsky initially thought he had an ally in Catania when he first started looking at buying UMC last year. (Chopivsky gave $1,000 to Catania's re-election campaign last March.)

Chopivsky says he can't figure out how Catania has basically become his mortal enemy. "Bam [he] just turned on me," Chopivsky says, adding that he thinks Catania has "one of the greatest brains I've ever encountered."

Brains! So if we ever turn into zombies, Catania's probably going to get eaten first.

Catania is the DEVIL,that is why he can turn own anyone on the drop of a dime. hate 2 say it,HE"s GAY<and he FUCK S E hospital up since he took over the health committe. So he is gonna fight everyone that he cant control 2 stay away from this deal. he gave the last company UMC and around $100,000,000.00 2 run UMC. he would love 2 give it 2 unity health care, like the $100,000,000.00,and more that he directed 2 them. this guy get 2 spend $2.5 BILLION every year 4 the next 4 years. thats my 2 cents!

What does Catania's sexual orientation have to do with anything? Hard to believe that is anyone's business but his... that's my 2 cents.

Between the constant slurs and insults thrown around by the One Citidiot crowd, one begins to think they don't have much to offer in terms of ideas, and certainly not in terms of wit.

Of course, some knew that all along.

  • noodlez

HIS SEXUAL ORIENTATION HAS EVERY THING TO DO WITH IT.

HE APPROACHES THINGS FROM THE WHITE, GAY, REPUBLICAN POINT OF VIEW. HE CANT HIDE UNDER THE CLOAK OF THE FAILED FENTY ADMIN ANY LONGER AND HAVE THEM RUBBER STAMP HIS BULLSHIT. HE IS LEFT TO FEND FOR SHIMSELF WHICH IS WHY CHOPIVSKY JUST BEEN MADE AWARE OF HOW THEM THANGS SWITCH UP ON YOU WHEN THINGS DONT GO THEIR WAY.

SINCE THIS SELF-SERVING HOMOSEXUAL BECAME COMMITTEE CHAIR NEW AIDS/HIV CASES IS OFF THE CHARTS WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY TO THE POINT THAT IT IS BECOMING AN EPIDEMIC. HE WAS SO CONCERNED WITH THAT MARRAIAGE BILL AND GETTING BACK AT FOLK THAT DIDNT SIDE WITH SHIM EVERYTHING ELSE WAS TABLED. TYPICAL!!

I HOPE HE ENJOYS HIS LAST TERM.

CHOPIVSKY NEED TO WATCH HIS WORDS- "Chopivsky says, adding that he thinks Catania has "one of the greatest brains I've ever encountered." THAT STATEMENT CAN BE MISCONSTRUED.

I keep wondering if Catania really cares about that hospital or if "they" just don't want "these people" in their communities. Hate for it to be that way, but that's reality. I live in this community and come to the hospital. The hospital has come a long way in improvements to cleanliness and services. Customer service could be enhanced, but they do have GOOD doctors and nurses. This hospital represents years of service by members of this community and the surrounding area and no one ever thinks of that. It is being tossed around for someone elses career to bloom with no regards to the employees and their livelihoods. And the fact that the residents (like myself) NEEDS this hospital.

    Does anyone REALLY care?

I don't care if Catania is gay or sleeps with animals. Does he REALLY care about this place and its community? I don't care if Chopivsky thinks Catania has a brain or not...does he REALLY care or just want to get back at someone and make more millions? The mayor NOR Marion Barry (who LIVES in Ward 8 and is STILL a crackhead)cares about this WARD.

There should be a freaking revolt!

@noodlez; you are on point with your comment. Catania is only concerned with the white gay male agenda.

@Insider; you are on point. DC At-Large Councilmember David Catania is one mean hateful SOB. He can be a vicious QUEEN when you cross him.

  • Five To Go

I agree with @noodlez. This man is a true demon, he does not care about anyone but himself.

  • UMC will be fine

UMC needs time to gather its strength before it is sold. The reality of is simple, the hospital serves as a gap in services in River East and the Mayor and the rest of Council should think long and hard about the long term ramifications of their actions. Their argument that UMC and Ward 8 residents are hurting the bond rating of the city is just another slap in the face of the residents and citzens in this area. I don't buy the hype of why it must be sold right now. I think about the millions of dollars the city forgoes in courting developers to the city (not in ward 7 or 8 mind you) but can't find the guts to dig deep and take a stand on supporting quality acute care in a community that has none.

WOW - from fenty to gray and I thought it couldnt get worse.

  • DCDem

The rush to sell the hospital is largely due to the fire set under the assses of the Mayor and Council Chair by the NY Bond Rating Agencies. They all but told the city to sell the hospital or else.
