The Committee Assignments Are In… (Updated)

The day of reckoning has arrived, at long last, and Almost Council Chairman Kwame Brown has announced how he'll divvy up D.C. Council committee chairmanships.

If Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells' Twitter feed is to be believed, here's how it shakes out:

  • Wells and Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham have switched roles, with Wells heading up the Committee on Public Works and Transportation. Wells is also taking Graham's spot on the Metro board. (Update: It appears Wells jumped the gun on that announcement. Brown says he'll make public that pick soon.) This is a big win for Wells, whose office has already released a statement saying how "excited" the multi-modal transit-loving councilmember is. This is also a big loss for Graham, who now gets the pretty thankless role of overseeing the Committee of Human Services in an era of painful budget cuts. His office has not released a statement.
  • Graham's silver lining? He gets to keep his cherished role overseeing the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration. Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander has taken to Twitter to voice her displeasure, saying she wants ABRA since she's now been upgraded to the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs.
  • Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr., who is currently under a cloud with the ongoing Team Thomas investigation, will be the chairman of the Committee on Economic Development. That sound you hear? WaPo editorial writer Jo-Ann Armao hammering out an editorial blasting the decision. Nevertheless, it's a nice promotion for Thomas.
  • Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry was assigned Alexander's old spot on the Committee on Aging and Community Affairs. If the name of the committee doesn't give it away, Brown just sent Barry to legislative no-man's land.
  • Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser has been sent to the playground, or the Committee on Libraries, Parks and Recreation, after losing her spot to Alexander. A little payback for being so pro-Fenty? Probably.

Everybody else stays the same when it comes to chairmanships. Remember, these picks aren't finalized until the council votes to approve them.

  • Truth Hurts

Unf..ing believable! Harry "show me the money" Thomas chairing Committee on Economic Development.

    Only in America.

  • Sally

Yvette knows that ABRA isn't in DCRA anymore, right?

And Harry Thomas is the happiest camper tonight. He gets a plum committee chair, he knows Vince Gray won't do squat about his financial shenanigans, and he thinks he has the inside track to win the at-large election in the spring. He's the Forrest Gump of the DC Council.

  • Truth Hurts

    Forrest Gump was honest.

  • ColorMeSkeptical

@Sally "He's the Forrest Gump of the DC Council."

  • WhataJoke

Who in the hell is the Chairman? Tommy Wells or Kwame Brown? Why did Wells announce the 2011 committee chairs prior to K. Brown publicizing his picks? Wells has absolutely no respect for Kwame and it’s obvious by Wells’ Twitter stunt that robbed Kwame of the opportunity to officially announce his committee chairs.

Kwame is going to be eaten alive by his fellow mates.

  • ward4 gets new council member

At least Brown knew to put Bowser incharge of the sandboxes and playgrounds...she should be able to handle that. But in a way I do feel sorry for the children because she will find a way to f*ck that up to until the new ward 4 council member starts in 2012!

  • DCexpat

Are we also doomed to Mendelson heading Public Safety?

  • Boston

We are in such sad shape. Tommie Jr. in charge of development? He has done a swell job in 5 and he cant even set a non-profit properly. I hope Brown doesn't get ate up, especially with our budget woes.

Sorry Bowser, pay back is a mother. I am not sure who is running what anymore in this city.

  • Really?

Look I'll jump on the Harry T non-profit issue when they do an investigation on Ronnie Moten. I'm still waiting to see who his backers were for those God awful videos as well as those glossy magazines

    GREAT POINT Really?!

  • DC Respected Common People

    Stop, stop and stop it.

Barry is our smartest Politician, not even Gray can touch this factor. I am certain that the meeting between Gray and Kwame, where he missed the funeral they were privately meeting to prepare this line-up of Chairpersons, after Barry worked his behind off for Gray in Ward 8 with the largest votes via during the primary and general elections.

Harry continues to grow with the best personality and on-hands approach after Barry, as he must to clean up his non-profit issue via the second court order by January 8th. He has only two staff legislative persons to assist him w/ Economic Development, as those females w/o political savvy nor expertise ALL must go. But he too much of a control freak for this.

Muriel needs to understand that Parks and Libraries truly have it's advantages for her political growth, and will do her equal justice, as long as she complies to the format of Thomas.

Alexander needs to stop being Gray's watch dog, and complete her job of auditing Jim Graham's adorable organization PEACEOHOLICS, the organization that gain millions after millions from the fenty and city council with limited competitive bidding. Also, never terminate staff with the press before she consults professionally with them.

By fiscal year 2011, she should lose about 130 pounds because her weight ages her tremendously.

I agree Ms. Catania needs to stay put.

And citizens must watch Ms. Jim Graham as Council prohibits him from freely giving funding to PEACEOHOLICs a free ride of funding by overlooking agencies with fiscal and operational creditability and accountability long before this organization started as, Alliance of Concerned Men, Concern Black Men, Don't Smoke the Brothers.

No one had discussed the Metro representative at City Council.

Kwame you luckily earned the role as Chairman. DC do not need to see you let the incoming Mayor Gray dictate the five Ws on how best to govern the Legislative branch of City Council. Gray was scared to sanctioned Fenty, as he validated hearings after hearings exposing the same issues of NO COOPERATION.
So, pull your pants up and lead, you have the white legislators to deal with that are no smarter than the black ones. The only difference is that they stick together, and you like to kiss up.

With knowledge about Employment Services fraud, new staff and department operations and past leadership Councilmember Barry needs to clean up what he oversighted, as Michael Brown must Chair the Committee on Aging and Community Affair because he's an on-the-job-training show boat.

Wal-Mart champion Harry Thomas, Jr. as chairman of Economic Development? Lord, save us - and local businesses - from HTJ and the big box stores.
