Kwame Brown Sued Over Credit Card Debt, Again

The D.C. Council's next chairman is being sued, again, over credit card debt. Kwame Brown owes a Texas-based collections agency $5,661.43 for unpaid debt on a Citibank credit card, according to a lawsuit filed on Oct. 15 in D.C. Superior Court.

Brown's debt problems made big news this summer during the campaign. NBC 4's Tom Sherwood first broke the news that Brown owed more than $50,000 on three different credit cards.

Two previous debt-related lawsuits are still active against Brown, court records show. He agreed to a $500 a month repayment plan for one of the cards. In the end, those debts didn't appear to matter much to voters. Brown still easily dispatched his main opponent, former Ward 5 Councilmember Vincent Orange.

The most recent lawsuit says Brown last made a payment on the Citibank credit card in Feb. 2009.

LL is awaiting comment from Brown's spokesman and will update as necessary. In stories published this summer about his debt, Brown said that he and his wife lived beyond their means accumulating the debt but have taken steps to curtail their spending. Brown's big spending included boats, luxury cars and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Any truth to rumor that his cars have been repossessed?

Lord have mercy on us D.C. residents/taxpayers/voters. They elected this idiot to be the DC Chairman on the Council of the District of Columbia. We all are doomed!!! Welcome back Control Board.

  • GrayCat

our new council chairman! what a total and utter embarrassment.

and we want to talk about statehood?? give me a break!

  • Ward One Resident

I really get tired of whenever a poltician has an issue, be it corruption, personal debt, or crack smoking, people always bring up voting rights and statehood. It's just a ridiculous argument to make.

If the morals/ethics of elected officials dictated statehood (or counties and cities governing themselves) the country would look a whole lot different.

  • GrayCat

    @ ward one resident:

my point - we will NEVER get close to statehood with the likes of barry and kwame on the council. they make us look ridiculous, incompetent, and idiotic.

this congress or any other has ultimate authority over our hopes for statehood. these actions impact our ability to even make a case.

you cant compare our situation to any other "county or city," so your argument is pointless.

  • Truth Hurts

Nationwide, DC's gotta rank near the top per capita re council members who've been sued or have judgments and/or liens pending against them. Kwame's FICO score must be about 300.

Unbelievable. He wouldn't even qualify for a mortgage.

  • That Girl!

Grew up with this one, no surprise that he is on to bigger and better things. It's in him, need to do investigation on him, might come up with more than just this!

  • Grace Jones

I thought I seen D.C. At-Large Councilmember Kwame Brown recently on BET at the Soul Train awards in Atlanta sitting/dancing in the audience. It must be nice when you are a celebrity.

Slave To The Rhythm and Pull Up To The Bumper Baby.

I give KB 6 months until self-destruction, meaning the Pro-tempore will have to take the reigns. oh no!!! cheh?

  • Sally

    What an utter embarrassment!

Is it too late to change my vote for Kathy Patterson?

  • KJ

I am a litle surprised that people are heavily judging the man. In truth, most of our elected members of Congress are worse off. And with the economy the way it is, most of the people you know are probably in a similar situation. Mr. K. Brown is human and made some foolish mistakes. I pray for our sake he learned from.

  • Drez

Wow. Who would have ever thought? I'm shocked.

  • Stephon

Stop the "hateration" people!! Fenty lost!! Gray won! We all know you're trying to knock off his people. Won't work! Please move back to Virginia! Oops my bad, most of you already live there....

  • ColorMeSkeptical

@KJ - can you provide some facts to back up your claim that "most of our elected members of Congress are worse off", i.e. have personal debt > $750k and have loaded up on credit card debt he/she cannot afford in order to buy a boat and flashy (yet unnecessary) cars? I find that terribly hard to believe.

If you want to make excuses for someone with such an obvious sense of entitlement, then fine. Personally, the situation smacks to me of someone who believes he and his family should be afforded anything they want even if they cannot pay for it. Not necessarily the American Dream of years past, more the DC Dream of the past 10 years.

I live in Ward 6. Voted Fenty, wrote in Fenty. Thing is, I'm more worried about Kwame than Vince. Is it "hateration" to think that someone totally incapable of managing their own finances will have trouble managing the city's?

With regard to "knocking off his (Vince's) people - given enough time folks like Harry Thomas and Kwame will do themselves in. Hopefully that comes before they turn back the clock on the progress made under Fenty's administration.

DC got what it voted for... Kwame Brown! Can we please have the control board back!?

  • DC Respected Common People

Kwame Brown, Vincent Gray, Ms. Catania nd Ms. Graham should ALL been replaced with competence and integrity. Get the facts straight haters of Blacks.

Today, Gray hires the white silence keeper, Cathy Lanier who is known to have discriminated on many Black effective police officers, as she validates hiring a host of outside white officers. Somehow, Gray forgot his commitment to the Fratenal Order of Police (FOP), as he overlooked meeting with them before he made the Chief of Police decision.

He's just like he was at GW, a black man by race not the ugly ass face, with a white liver via his operational style. That's right he commited to FOP only to ensure the General Election vote, and as Mayor-elect he's going to do whatever those conservative white folks tell him.

Let's not forget, how Kwame will either select two white Councilpersons' with no regards to Black inner-city youth to serve as the Chairperson of the Education Committee of the City Council.

All of this shit is scary. People need to MARCH and DEMAND for competence and effective government operations in the District of Columbia.

There's no real men upholding the leading two positions in City Council and as Mayor with balls. Both of them act like young male puppies commiting errors after errors, trying to impress non-caring Republicans and being controlled by the Democratic Conservative regimes.

Harry Thomas does not have a problem, if VG was not scared of Fenty and his godfather, the short KKK Nickles he would have sanctioned the out-going Mayor that sometmes beat his wife.
