Gray Skips Cop’s Funeral For Lunch With Kwame

Is making your boss look like a total heartless and incompetent boob a fireable offense?

That's the question o' the day, after news broke that Almost Mayor Vince Gray was dining at the Fourth Estate with Almost Chairman Kwame Brown instead of going to the funeral of  MPD officer Paul Dittamo, who died early Saturday morning in a car crash while on duty. (H/T to WeLoveDC for the initial report.)

Gray's spokeswoman Doxie McCoy tells ABC7 that Gray's staff goofed and didn't tell him about the funeral. Ok, fair enough, but what is Gray going to do about it?

This is the third time this week the Gray camp has been caught flat-footed. First, it's the election party at a club that's hasn't paid its city taxes, then there's the disclosure that transition director Reuben Charles' has even more financial problems, and now this.

So, sweet readers, LL puts it to you: does someone's head need to roll? Clumsy communications, after all, can come back to cost politicians down the line—just ask the guy Gray beat to get his next job, Still Mayor Adrian Fenty (who, by the way, did get to the funeral today).

@downtown rez. Are you going to cry now? Gonna act like a bit*h? Lol Look at the little man telling me to drop dead. No, I'm going to cry instead. NOT. Lmao

  • downtown rez

    Looser.
If I and my wife and my children can afford to live in DC on my income, than so can MPD.
    You are dodging the point.
    It's clear.
Stop being a stooge and a hack.
    If you don't, I don't give a fuck. I certainly won't cry over it.
But I will call you lying ass out.
    Again, Fuck You.

  • try2staysanendc

@downtown Rez: thanks for the laugh jerk. Don't won't to play with you anymore. Going to pick up my marbles and go home in dc. Afterall. I do live in dc a**wipe.. Lol so long sucker. Oops wrong choice of words. Lmao

  • downtown rez

*yawn* Good for you. So do I. Just like any other middle class person could, if they actually wanted to.
Really. Three bedroom two bath places are easy to find for under $200K. That's easily less than $1400 per month, and that's nothing on a cop's (or a teacher's, or a firefighter's) salary.
The sad fact is that most DC cops and teachers and firefighters don't respect DC enough to live here. They look at the far out suburbs and think those are a better deal.
At the end of the day they make their choice, just like I do. And just like you (try2staysanendc) say you do also.

I watched King Fenty on HBO's Bill Maher. He looked or seemed out of place on this program. King Fenty didn't discuss why he was voted out of office, an example, his vindictive nasty behavior towards many of his constituents, his dealings with his Fraterternity brothers, playing racial politics, dissing the late 98 year old black civil rights legend, Dororthy Irene Height.
King Fenty aka the Movie Star is trying to make a name for himself on the national level. People will realize, Fenty isn't very bright and articulate. He's not a black man, because his mother is a white woman and he prefers to be considered anything other than a black man to get acceptance from whites in America. It's called having a slave mentality. I wonder what his grades were like at Howard Law School and why did he choose to attend a mostly black Law School? Was it because, King Fenty couldn't get into Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Duke, or Georgetown Universities Law Schools?

Good riddance to this dictator and fool. Maybe he can move to Venezuela, South America and live with the socialist dictator President Hugo Chavez. King Fenty should feel at home with Hugo. If there is a place in hell, this guy deserves to go there.

I believe Vince should have been there.

I believe he is not the type to shrug off something like a Govt employee funeral.

I believe his staff was negligent in getting the information to him.

I believe weather he is Mayor or Council is irrelevant as BOTH should have been there.

I ALSO believe that it is MIGHTY convenient that LANIER, the person half of you praise and say he needs to keep and the other half swear he needs to fire NOW even though he's not yet been sworn in, is the person who should have been responsible for making sure EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL, Every agency head, and ESPECIALLY her new Boss were aware of arrangements. The fact that she didn't speaks much louder than anything else.

You all need to read between the lines... Bauman, you have first hand knowledge of how vindictive she is so you should have gone behind her and made sure all the council knew of the arrangements. It wasn't JUST Vince who didn't know.... It was the ENTIRE council.

While the Adrian-ites want to point to this as another way that Vince is incompetent, to me it looks and smells mighty fishy that no one at the City Hall but Fenty knew. Why am I the only one who thinks that's strange? Or are you still trying to convince me that it's NOT Fenty, it's EVERYONE else that's crazy?

  • Tformation

    One last comment....

I am married to a DC Police Officer. HE didn't know of the arrangements until His friend called late the night before the service. I saw plenty of news coverage of the accident but did not know that final arrangements had been made either. I wish I had. As the wife of an officer, I feel terrible for not being able to show my respects to the family. The one thing that makes it better.... God knows ny heart and it is his opinion that matters to me. ONE!

My point, just because you knew, doesn't mean everyone else did. Give it a rest.

  • forreal

    Jon Bon Jovi,
Do you think Gabe Klein was the only director campaigning for Fenty? Try Sara Latterner, Jesus Aguirre, Stephanie Scott, Bridget Davis..

There is nothing wrong doing that after work hours. Many DC workers campaigned for Gray or Fenty, the question is will Gray keep Directors based on their performance or their political participation?

If I'm Mayor of the District of Columbia, I want to damn sight be surrounded by people that I know are loyal to me, especially in a climate such as it is. VG doesn't need to be worrying about any underminding attempts by someone with a secret agenda. (Stick with who bought you to the dance) is what I was always told. I too am the spouse of a police officer and would love to live in the District, how ever, I have a child and want the best for her,i.e, schools, living environment, etc., we want the best situation for our's just like you do. Living in the hood is what we have struggled to get away from, downtownrez, why would you think that we would compromise our families safety and well being, just for the sake of living in the city? The reason people do these kind of first responder jobs a lot of times outside of wanting to help people is to have a better situation for their families, you're over simplifying the situation. The point is, police officers with children have to be especially selective about where they live, because of the nature of the job. I don't know what officers you've been talking to but it sounds like you're just getting some surface shit from them, try really opening your eye's to the reality of the situation before you open your mouth.

So... You won't live in the areas your family is sworn to protect and serve. I and my family do- and you've no idea who I am or whether I've been a target or not. (hint- I have)
Thank you. I think you make my point nicely.

Either be the change you wish to see in others, or don't. Either way, don't complain about how things are too expensive. Because they are not. DC doesn't have an affordable housing problem so much as DC has a crime- and a perception of crime- problem.

  • Truth Hurts

Here's the deal. Gray received notice of the funeral, was preoccupied/overwhelmed by the frenzy surrounding his election, and spaced out on attending the ceremony. Several aides should've reminded him, but didn't because they too were overwhelmed.

Politically, Gray should've been up front, admitted he'd made a mistake, and specified steps implemented to shore up his scheduling process. Had he done so, virtually everyone would've let it go and forgiven him.

Here's why I'm concerned: He denied even knowing about it (not credible given his mpd supporters and cozy relationship with union officials), allowed (unnamed) staff to take the hit, and specified no new steps to correct the mistakes.

Gray's slimed Fenty at every turn and ascribed the worst motives to Fenty's mistakes. It was overkill.

To Gray and his supporters: Governing and campaigning are not the same. You're off to a rocky start.

  • Me-Bent Adrian

TH- just how the hell would know all of this about Gray. Really. You're making an assumption for the worst in the man because of your disdain for him. That I understand. You should be upfront and honest about it though. I have no qualms bashing Fenty for his short-comings because I am not longer a fan of his, but I'm very upfront about this being the reason that I hold such a low opinion of him.

You and Drez have never offered why exactly you two hate Gray, while Fenty bashers have offered dozens of reasons.

The truth really hurts, so go ahead and keep ignoring it.

By the way, how was your date with Drez?

  • downtown rez

    Me-Bent Adrian
Tell me, does it pass the smell test that reporters knew of the funeral, that union boss Baumann knew of the funeral, that phoning-it-in-Fenty knew of the funeral, and yet that Mayor Elect Gray did not know of the funeral?
It doesn't to me. It's very very unlikely. And again with the blaming of underlings and making excuses thing. I might be willing to overlook it, if that had been SOP with Gray's supporters for any of Fenty's mistakes.

@Truth Hurts-UNTIL GRAY MISSES IMPORTANT DELEGATE MEETINGS THAT WE SENT OUR SOON TO BE FORMER MAYOR TO DENVER TO REP US AT. UNTIL GRAY DISAPPEARS TO GO OUT OF THE COUNTRY WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE CITIZENS HE REPRESENTS. UNTIL GRAY, WHEN HE ACTUALLY BECOMES MAYOR, OFFICE REPRESENTATION IS A NO SHOW AT ONE OF THE MOST BRUTAL KILLINGS IN THE CITY PRESS CONFERENCE.
DONT COME UP WITH THIS PETTY ASS BULLSHIT ABOUT WHY YOU THINK HE FUCKED UP BY NOT ATTENDING A FUNERAL AS THE MAYOR ELECT.

HE WAS LUNCHING WITH THE SOON TO BE COUNCIL CHAIR CONDUCTING BUSINESS ON BEHALF OF THE CITY. SO EXACTLY HOW IS HE OFF TO A ROCKY START? YOU ACT LIKE HE WAS OUT WITH A BIKE SEAT UP HIS ASS OR ALL HUGGED UP WITH SHIRTLESS MEN.

"Politically, Gray should’ve been up front, admitted he’d made a mistake, and specified steps implemented to shore up his scheduling process. Had he done so, virtually everyone would’ve let it go and forgiven him." THIS IS A COMMENT AND SUGGESTION THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DIRECTED AT FENTY. YOU A LIL OFF WITH YOUR AIM AND A BIT TARDY WITH THIS BULLSHIT JUST LIKE FENTY WAS WITH HIS ACKOWLEDGED FAKE ASS GUILT ADMISSION IN HIS LIL INFOMERCIAL.

WHERE YOU GET OFF ON THIS SHIT? IM SURE THE CITY WAS WELL REPRESENTED AT THE CEREMONY. YOU AND YOUR BUTT BOY CONTINUE TO FEED OFF MR SUDERMAN'S SHIT LIKE DUNG BEETLES. THE BOTH OF YOU ARE A BIT PREEMIE IN YOUR HYPOCRITICAL EJACULATIONS OF EVERY THING GRAY DOES. WHY DONT YALL RELAX AND TAKE IT SLOW THAT WAY THE END RESULT WILL FAIR BETTER THAN THE EMBARRSING PREDICAMENT YOUR COMMENTS ARE PUTTING YOU IN.

    ONE CITY!

    HEY WCP RESET YOUR CLOCKS!

  • SEis4ME

Drez, does it pass the smell test that no councilmember attended his funeral? How is it possible that not ONE member attended his funeral, including the person who chairs the committe on Public Safety, Mendelson, who said he was not aware.

So are we going to question the motivations of EVERY coucil member's "explanation" for this or only Gray? Of course, only Gray.

By the way, I hope that someone on this board is impersonating you because I am still in readers shock over the tomfoolery you have engaged in with all of this "fuck you" et. al. Why in the monkey hell are you cursing and arguing on a damn message board at near wee hours. That's ridiculous and you should really be ashamed. Ashamed. A..got damn..shamed!

  • SEis4ME

Noodlez, I can only say OMG at some of the stuff you say. geez!

    OMG again...and again. LOLOLOL!

does it pass the smell test that no councilmember attended his funeral...including the person who chairs the committe on Public Safety, Mendelson, who said he was not aware.

Why should I defend every councilmember.
Really. Especially when I won't even defend the two councilmembers who should have been there: the council chair (and Mayor Elect) Vincent Gray, and CM Mendelson.
LOL Excuses excuses... Be honest with yourself. If it was Fenty that did this no one would be making apologies for him. They didn't with the Metro accident, nor with any other funeral in his tenure.

  • SEis4ME

Sorry DREZ, you can tell that lie to someone else who'll believe it. You are saying that Gray KNEW about the funeral and has chosen to lie to the public about it. That accusation would hold IF and I mean IF other members had attended or at least Mendelson. Yet, NONE of them did. But you ascribe cloak and dagger motives to Gray solely due to your inability to accept him as Mayor and your anger of Fenty's loss. That's what this is about dude.

And it's not an excuse. I made it clear that I do not believe that a "mayor" should attend funerals of DC officers or other citizens for that matter unless in the case of extreme tragedy such as the mass shootings in SE DC or the Metro Incident. In other cases, a high up rep from the Mayor's office should suffice. So you don't have to assume my motivations as I have no problems pointing them out.

  • Me-Bent Adrian

Drez- what I'm arguing is that it's wrong to assume the absolute worst of the man. That's all and that's exactly what you and your new boyfriend TH is doing. You can shoot off all the tidbits about this funeral being publicized and all the baloney about Gray needing to be cognizant about it, but none of us really know if he missed on purpose or intentional. Either way, he’s not fucking Satan for doing so. If you’re genuinely upset about him missing this funeral, I must imagine that you nearly crapped yourself when Fenty was a no show for the memorials of the metro accident and the mass-shooting victims. How on earth did you manage to get pass that. Oh wait, it was Fenty and simply a error in scheduling… must have been his staff right?

  • Anothernative

@downtown rez, This confirms my suspicion of you , you are absolutely stuck on stupid. The only scenario you can possibly see as real is one that exist in (your) head, you are absolutely closed minded. I would suggest you go see a shrink so that he can help you escape from that prison of a mind that you're working with. I give you a situation that any compassionate person would have to empathize with and you botch that, you're a lost cause.
