Watch Adrian Fenty and Vincent Gray Make Their Cases

Both Adrian Fenty and Vincent Gray recently sat down with Washington City Paper reporters and editors to seek our endorsement. (Fenty got it, mostly on the strength of how city agencies have performed in the last four years and despite his well-earned reputation as a jerk.)

Here are some excerpts from the interviews, just in time to prep for tomorrow's election. Watch Fenty here:

And Gray here:

Fuck! After watching these, I have no idea why the CP would endorse Fenty. He's struggling to even defend his own damn record. That shit about how much he's done for low-income residents, he will never be able to really quantify what this means. He offers nothing specific. As far as how great the City agencies are running, I guess he doesn't have to wait down at the DMV much.

Gray on the other hand just seems to understand on a deeper level whatever question is given to him and his responses clearly indicate a man of high intelligence with a lot of care for what he does.

I just do not understand what the hell the CP sees in Fenty.

I watched too, and came to the exact opposite conclusion.
    It's an amazing world.

So after weeks of waiting, this is the culmination of the WCP's efforts?

TO be honest, both interviews were horrible. Not on the part of the candidates but the interviewers themselves. Basically, Fenty was asked why he should continue to be mayor and Gray was asked whether Fenty's term is a failure, who was the worst mayor since home rule, and what city CEO does he admire.

This was the interview? Out of two hours of time, this is the most you got from Fenty and Gray?

Could you have at least tackled them down on SOMETHING. Go after Gray if you must. Go after Fenty but provide the reader with something. If I had to make a decision based off of this, I wouldn't vote at all.

By the way, I'm ok with Lanier. But she implemented a policy that initially faced outcries from those in the area of Trinidad (note: not in Wards 1, 2,3) and was later found unconstitutional. Could have asked about that?

Who's the worst mayor since home rule? WOW.

One thing that bothers me about this coverage is how the media has basically eliminated the term of Anthony Williams. Listening to this interview, EVERYTHING was wrong in the city prior to Fenty until HE came to clean it up.

...One thing that bothers me about this coverage is how the media has basically eliminated the term of Anthony Williams...

    SEis4ME
Not so. The media recognizes and appreciates Williams. What's a mystery to me is how Gray supporters can on one hand attribute all that is good in our city to Williams, and on the other turn a blind eye to the fact that Williams has endorsed Fenty.

  • Adrian Bent-Me

Drez- I believe you honestly thought Fenty made a compelling, convincing argument about his tenure, but to me, it looks like the guy is way out of his league. I guarantee if the CP staff had really pushed him on a number of the numerous shady shit he had done in the past, he would have looked like a dear caught in headlights. But they lobed a relatively innocent question intended to get a litany of accomplishments from any normal candidate. Instead, we get Fenty and his bullshit.

As for Gray. They bait him with a loaded question and he answers very intelligently about factual things.

I just don't see how anyone could support a guy like Fenty- our own GW Bush.

  • noodlez

WOW! BOTH VIDEO PIECES ARE PURE BULLSHIT!

WE DONT HEAR THE QUESTION ASKED TO FENTY BEFORE HE STARTS RAMBLING ON ABOUT SERVICES AND SUCH. AGENCIES DOING WHAT THEY SUPPOSED TO DO. OKAY AND??!

THEN TO PROBE AND NEEDLE GRAY ABOUT OTHER MAYORS IS NOT GRAY MAKING A CASE BUT SHOWING WCP TRYING TO OBTAIN GOTCHA MOMENT WITH SOMEONE THATS METHODICAL WITH HIS WORDS. WHO CAME UP WITH THAT IDEA AND/OR LINE OF QUESTIONING? I THOUGHT WHITE FOLKS WERE SMART?

AS FOR WCP ENDORSEMENT OF THE JERK (INSERT COVER PICTURE OF FENTY JOLSON HERE) THEY ARE A LIBERAL TABLOIDISH RAG SO TO THROW THE DOG A BONE BEFORE EUTHANASIA IS PAR FOR THE COURSE.

    DowntownRez...hunh?

Please post the articles showing deference to Williams. If you notice, even in the clip, Fenty started talking about how bad city services were four years ago when the reality is four years ago was better than 8 years ago. The services are continuing to improve. The improvement did not BEGIN under Fenty.

But I'll let you have that. I'd rather wait for the articles you are getting ready to post differentiating between those things designed and implemented by Fenty vs. those either completed or in the pipeline under Williams. Bill Turque is the closest we've gotten to drawing distinctions between Rhee's own design and those begun under Janey.

Thanks for the links in advance.

Oh, and what does correctly acknowledging what Williams has done and his support of Fenty have to do with anything? One is solid based on reported fact. The other is his opinion. You can't fact-check an opinion.

  • Tformation

Trying to fact check Williams' opinion.....
    Mmmhmmm.... Here goes,

Williams stated that he works at a firm that does lots of business with the city so his initial reaction was to stay out of it because he recognized it would be improper.

He then tried to get the candidates to leave him alone by politely reminding them what happened to the last person he endorsed.

It is obvious to me after trying to punk Obama for an endorsement that SOMEONE reminded someones BOSS just who approved their contracts with the city and demanded an endorsement.

Williams, upset that this was not the person he wanted to win, did what his BOSS told him to do and said he supports Fenty with the hopes that his jinx still works.

Will will show him tomorrow that it does.

The end (please excuse any typos)

  • Adrian Bent-Me

Drez- who really gives a shit about endorsements anyhow? The City paper has proven that to me. CP has been critical of Fenty for most of his time as Mayor, calling him out on a host of things yet decided to back him. I don't really see how it helps because the majority of Gray supporters who read the CP are suprised/baffled by this and the majority of Fenty supporters who read the CP are suprised/baffled by this.
