Stop the Music: Gray Volunteer Says Moten’s Go-Go Efforts Violate Election Law

Is Ron Moten's Campaign for Adrian Fenty Against the Law?

A volunteer with the Vincent Gray campaign is asking the city’s Office of Campaign Finance to look into whether Ron Moten’s go-go concerts, songs, and magazines in support of Mayor Adrian Fenty break D.C. election laws.

James Abely, a former aide to former Councilmember Harold Brazil, said in a complaint dated and filed yesterday that Moten is a Fenty campaign strategist, and Moten’s go-go concerts, songs, music video, magazine and website need to be regulated by the OCF just if they were coming directly from the Fenty campaign.

That would mean some of Moten's most visible efforts to get Fenty re-elected would be subject to a $2,000 donation cap, and Moten’s The Otherside Magazine—which features cartoons of Gray the friendly looking vampire—would need to have the disclaimer that they are campaign material, according to Abely. In the letter, Abely said Moten’s efforts “appear to be have been a coordinated” with the Fenty campaign, and he’s looking from some sort of “enforcement action” against the Fenty campaign.

Reached by phone, Abely it took "a 15-minute Google search" to find the alleged violations of campaign finance law. He said he filed the complaint on his own, and without any assistance from the Gray campaign. “This is a citizen saying 'enough,'" Abely told LL.

LL couldn't get Moten on the phone (his voicemail box is full), but in a previous conversation, Moten said The Otherside Magazine was paid for by advertisements. (Hey, that's the same business model as City Paper.)

A Fenty campaign spokesman said the campaign hasn't seen the complaint. An OCF spokesman said the complaint is currently under review, and no decision has yet been made whether to hold a hearing before the Sept. 14 primary. LL isn't holding his breath.

This is interesting, at the very least they she be registered as a PAC or another Special Interest organization. This could be an issue if they are related to the campaign if all of this is happening "off the books". It could be even worse if this is independent of the campaign and it's obvious there is coordination between the two parties.... Didn't Missouri send that state senator Jeff Smith to jail for this?

    OOPS!

I GUESS MR "EVERYTHING STREET" MOTEN LEFT HIS JAILHOUSE LAYWERING BEHIND WHEN HE HIT THE STEETS.

HERE IS A DISCLAIMER FOR YOU: THE ANTICS, LOUD MOUTHING AND ASS KISSING OF MR RONALD MOTEN DO NOT REFLECT THE EFFORTS OF BLACK FOLK IN AND OF THIS CITY TO FURTHER PROMOTE THEIR CAUSE OF RACE EQULITY AND VOTING RIGHTS IN CONGRESS. I AM noodlez AND I APPROVE THIS RANT!

Last week I sent an email to the DC office of Campaign Finance to enquire about Ron Moten's video for Fenty that he released on youtube last Tuesday or Wednesday. I received an email response back last Thursday and was told that their office would be looking into this "early next week". I have not heard or seen anything - does anyone know anything about this? City Paper - help???

I tried to call them also Larry. They told me I would have to bring it to their headquarters and have it notarized in order to file a complaint. They will not accept a phone call or an email. Interesting.

Make sure you get the name of the person giving you this information SE Res and Larry. If you recieved a standard auto reply, you need to call and find out who recieved it and GET A NAME and if at all possible, get what they are saying in writing. They will tell you anything now. I suggest recording the conversation to make sure the information they are giving you is accurate and if not, they will have to answer for it.

Thank you for calling though. We are all sick of hearing it. I wonder what kind of song Ron will be singing 3 years from now when he is broke, unemployable and back where he started.

I wish we could contact some of the recording artist whose music they are using I am sure there would be other lawsuits as well and copyright issues.

  • jes’ sayin

I guess freedom of speech doesn't apply to singing...or to rap. This is pure foolishness.

  • Really?

What took ya'll so long. Moton plain in simple violated the laws. I believe that folks were scared, because in order to file the complaint you have to give your name.

They were permitted to play what is basically campaign music at a public school football game last week. Since when can any 1 candidate mandate campaigning in that environment? It was a football game sponsored with our tax dollars; not a campaign rally paid for by independent supportors.

Wow like is for real? When Vince Gray had TCB do a go-go for him it was okay. When Marion Barry and Vince Gray threw a "community day" at Oxon Run Park yesterday and they promoted Gray Day, it was okay. The reality is simple of this tomfolery is simple. This is a biased and baseless complaint.Gray's campaign does not want people to know how he mismanaged a billion dollar budget and the multitude of misgivings as the Director of DHS. Most recently, his mistakes in cutting the funding for the Summer Youth Jobs, Trolley Cars, the illegl fence, gang intervention funds given to Harry Thomas, and oh yeah HOW THE OFFICE OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE MADE GRAY RETURN 5K OF 10K HE SOLICITED FROM COMCAST CABLE IN 2008 ON COUNCIL STATIONARY. Someone call the fact checker....
Please don't believe for one minute that the complaint filed against Ron Moten is by a "volunteer" doing their civic duty. Ask any Gray supporter one reason they support him or better yet one thing he hs done for DC other than Covenant House in the 90's and they will tell you to go to his website. At least 90% of ther Gray campaign are from the days of the 90's- Marion Barry, Sharon Pratt, etc, etc. Why do you think a poll worker was FIRED from SE Tennis and Learning Center yesterday for telling a voter "you should check into Fenty and his wife, and don't vote for him." Fortunately at 441 4th ST NW, the other day, I have a video recording of yet another election day worker telling me to vote for Gray. Haha...

  • Tired of the mess

This is honestly a shame. Messages that have truth to theme that get to young folks are not allowed because the last thing they want is the truth. I find it funny how this is wrong but I can hear the Gray campaign say that Fenty stole $82 Million without any facts. Why don't we talk about the real reason that the report is slated to come out after the election? Because Gray and Thomas don't want to have to answer on the campaign trail about the questions of why they wasted time and money and made accusations and stated that folks stole money that they can not prove. This is a shame.

  • DCNatives

I also called the Office of Campaign Finance & I was told that I needed to submit a notarized complaint.
