If Fenty Wins, You’ll Get Your Rhee, Alright?

Have suspicions that Michelle Rhee might jump ship even if Mayor Adrian Fenty wins re-election? The Current Newspapers mentioned the very idea in its recent endorsement of Vincent Gray.

Put those suspicions to bed! Fenty, who met with City Paper's staff this morning to undergo the single toughest interview in the history of the world, said that he's received Rhee's personal assurance that's she's staying.

Here's the transcript:

CP: There’s been some talk, mostly from people who are supporting your opponent, even if you win, Michelle Rhee will probably move. She’s getting married, etc. Do you and her have an understanding that’s she’s going to stay for your second term?

Fenty: We do. We do. And it’s not only an understanding that we personally have literally,  almost verbatim….

I’m almost 100 percent confident that there’s no way she feels right now that she has done everything that she sought out to do. I think that is Michelle Rhee as a person knowing her both personally and professionally.

CP:  Well love makes people do strange things, like move across the country.

Fenty: Fair enough. But I don’t think these are two people who would speak this publicly and strongly about their personal life if they didn't mean it. It’s not just her, but her finace, Mayor Johnson has said he is committed to the relationship.  I think they understand their import and their impact in their respective jobs.

And as I tell people: They are very young. Even if they spend another eight years both in the positions they’re in, they’re barely going to be 50, then they’ll have the rest of their lives to live together and do whatever they want.

Of course if Fenty wins it'll be in large part due to the love affair some of his voters have with Rhee, so it's pretty hard to imagine Fenty even offering up the slightest hint that she might leave.

Rhee, as you no doubt know, is set to marry Phoenix Sun (once a Sun, always a Sun)  and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. The couple just made news by disinviting a bunch of guests for a big swanky planned wedding on Sept. 4  in favor of a more subdued affair with just family and close friends at an undisclosed date.

And the big question is whether Fenty is considered a close enough friend to have made the cut. "Uhh, I think the short answer is yes," Fenty said.

What else did Fenty say? Well plenty. That dude can talk! LL and his City Paper cronies had a lot of good questions left in the chamber by the time the hour-long interview was over. We'll be posting video soon, so check back, and LL will try and bring you the most interesting sections shortly.

Also, thanks for your questions from this post. LL didn't get to ask any of them verbatim, (really, the dude can talk) but we did cover many of the topics you asked questions about.

Yes, he can talk, but do any of his answers make any sense? I get the gist of what he's saying, but are any of his sentences coherently constructed?

    @ indeed.....

I'm sure that the reason that the mayor spoke so much was because he didn't want to field any questions from LL and his colleagues.

But seriously, is there a less articulate political in this city? It is very difficult to decipher what points Fenty is trying to make. He's almost Sarah Palinesque. Almost.

If Rhee is re-elected schools chancellor, will she re-appoint Fenty as Mayor?

  • Indeed

Damnit! LL should've asked the mayor that.

Since we're not being sexist here, I think you should ask Vince Gray about the possibility of love convincing KJo to move to D.C. If Fenty is reelected, we might lose Rhee. But we might get KJo!

  • gdmt

Yes! the sexist chimes in. I was thinking the same thing; why is it that the only scenario here is that the woman move for the man? What's wrong with KJ moving here? "Well love makes people do strange things, like move across the country." Does that only apply to women?

  • gdmt

it's only women who do "strange things"

  • Ron Moten

C'mon, Hess! You're showing your lack of '90s b-ball nickname knowledge. It's K.J. not KJo. I bet one of the dudes in your office woulda known that.

  • SE Resident

soooo was that the only question you asked him? Where's the rest? Surely there were 50 or so in the comments section from where you asked readers to submit their questions.

  • SEis4ME

Er, maybe being mayor of sacremento is a little more important than being chancellor. If she were mayor and he chancellor, then I could understand the sexist angle. Based on what we now know, there is nothing sexist about expecting a chancellor to have more flexibility than a sitting mayor.

Along w/Fenty top campaign strategist Ron Moten and Peter Nickles, Rhee will be the reason many don't vote for Fenty. I've lived in this city longer than she's known her fiancee and I am offended at the suggestion that another "transient resident" should decide my vote.

  • SEis4ME

Oh and BTW, I'm looking forward to reading up on interview. Considering the energy your readers devote to being "anti-Fenty," I'm hoping that you in some way addressed our concernss because questions about whether Michelle Rhee will stay (when we know he would give no other answer) doesn't cut it.

    Looking forward....

The Bixxh has said that SHE WILL NOT STAY IF GRAY WINS.

LL, can we please get some coverage of this:

I still cannot believe that in this age of the internet, this hasn't gone viral. These remarks are simply appalling. No school leader should ever tell a story like this, much less mimic a child. She is simply a disgusting human being.

I would bet the only reason Rhee changed her wedding date has more to do with the current poll numbers. Fenty thought he would be comfortably ahead by early September. Since he's trailing Vince Gray, he has to convince the Rhee voters she's staying. A wedding 3000 miles away on the eve of the election wouldn't help.

  • larry

Great. You get time with Fenty and ask us for questions and we get more f@#@$ing info on Rhee. That's all Fenty wants us to focus on. What a joke. I am certain that we will not receive information on issues Adrian Fenty refuses to respond to from the past four years, now, and for 4 more years if he wins. Who was interviewing who? I don't care if the man "can talk". Can you?

  • tformation

lol @ Larry... nicely put. Lol

  • candycane1

Just got to ask you Alan, for curiosity's sake. Did Fenty see the questions yesterday and tell you that he would not answer those questions if he showed up? I ask because it's kind of a smack to us. You asked us for the questions. To say that the dude can talk... well we've heard 3 years of the dude and we all know that being articulate is not his strong point.

  • candycane1

As for Rhee staying, of course she would if he wins and might want to stay if he doesn't with the wedding plans changing so abruptly. Whatever the reasons are, planning a wedding is costly. Surely they have the money to pay these bills, but caterers are contractual, so is live music and everything else that goes along with big weddings. To change the date, place and now to make it private might also suggest that there is no hurry to get married. So either way she might want to stay. But we won't forget what she said about working for Gray.
