Independent Voter Fracas Heating Up

Hey Togo West, hope you're ready for a big ol' brawl.

Tomorrow Team Fenty and Team Gray will square off at the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics over whether or not the city's 72,000 registered independent voters should be able to vote in the Democratic primary next month.

Team Fenty says yes. "We really want to make sure that as many people who want to participate in this process have the ability to do so," says Fenty campaign spokesman Sean Madigan.

Team Gray says you've got to be kidding me. "This is clearly an attempt to game the system at the 11th hour," said Gray campaign manager Adam Rubinson, who sounded like he was going to burst a blood vessel during a conference call with reporters while talking about Fenty's "hypocrisy" for vetoing a recently passed "vote buying" bill because sitting elected officials shouldn't change the rules to an election in which they are candidates.

Strictly speaking, Fenty is—in case you hadn't noticed—a candidate in this election. On the other hand, Togo West & Co. are not, so strictly speaking, if the BOEE changes the rules, none of the candidates would be changing the rules. (The rules would, however, still change.)

LL is desperately trying to finish his column for this week's print edition of Washington City Paper (yes, print, we know; LL is a bit of a Luddite), and will try and have something intelligent to add later today or tomorrow after the 8:30 a.m. hearing.

    One City
Except for those who's vote doesn't count.

    Yeah, I couldn't resist.

WOW! So now, in his desperation, he wants to cancel the primary election and go straight for the general election.

He is saying he doesn't like who the democrats will choose (since theres a good chance it wont be him) so let's allow everyone else to vote in the democratic election so they will over rule the democrats choice. Well as we all know, Fenty is not one who supports democracy at any level so why should we expect it here.

He does not CARE what you think, what you want or what your concerns are if they are contrary to what he wants...

BUT..... he promises to take your concerns into account AFTER he steals the election. Yea right. And that bridge you sold me was so nice I want to buy another one.

He could always run as an independent in the general election and score those votes then. For efficiencies sake, lets just get this hullabaloo over ASAP and allow independents in the primary.

  • LOL

he is assuming that the independents will like him more than Gray. How is this rule change any different than the changes he stopped? It does make him look desperate.

  • S.E.

And this is the type of person you want to lead the city for another 4 years?

  • …….

As an independent, I applaud this move to allow me to vote in the primary...FOR GRAY!!!!

  • Indeed

Hypocrisy of the highest order. Veto a bill saying that people shouldn't be paid to vote and conclude that people running for office shouldn't change the rules of voting. And then...try to change the rules! What a first class douchebag.

I HOPE THIS ISNT THEIR ACE!

I HOPE THIS ISNT THE ONE ACTION ITEM THAT THEY THINK WILL TAKE THEM OVER THE TOP!

FOLKS THIS IS THE GUY WHO WANTS TO RUN OUT CITY FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS!

FENTY SHOULD STEP IN AND STOP THE MADNESS LIKE HILLARY DID WITH MARK PENN. HIS CAMPAIGN IS ZOOMING PAST DESPERATE AND HEADED TO THE CURVE OF DELUSIONAL WITH NO BRAKES.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Folks in all seriousness please make plans to attend Martin Luther King Jr. rally/march at Dunbar on Saturday @ 11A. We need to show those tea baggers we have strength in numbers too!

  • Indeed

wapo is reporting that fenty was denied.

  • Bill

    Boom! Roasted.

  • tformation

Indeed.... for once in wapo's past 4 years of reporting... they would be right! Lol.

I think this move makes the Fenty Team look foolish. The Independents already have a chance to vote in the General election. They are the ones who chose to classify themselves as independents. They could easily change their party affiliation if they wanted to be democrats. This move also shows how ignorant the mayor is.
