Fenty on Peaceoholics: I Don’t Need Any Statistics

When Martin Moulton managed to catch Mayor Adrian Fenty after a press conference Friday evening, he turned his recorder on and started to question Hizzonner about controversies surrounding anti-gang group Peaceoholics. Moulton—the president of the Convention Center Community Association—has questioned the mayor about Peaceaholics before: The  group has been able to garner millions in city funds with virtually no public oversight.

As  Moulton levels his microphone at Fenty, the mayor seems to get both candid and prickly. The recording, which Moulton provided to Washington City Paper, is below.

"What is the purpose of that criticism?" Fenty retorts when Moulton asks why there's been so little transparency regarding Peaceoholics funding and work.

Fenty tells Moulton he doesn't need to see numbers regarding the Peaceoholics and their operation: "I've met the kids, I mean, I don't need any statistics."

Moulton: "How much money do they get? Do you know?"

Fenty: "It's de minimis, I mean it's so small, I can't even believe a well-meaning person would even come close to criticizing. I bet it's not more than $3 million, and they've probably done $10 million of work."

But Moulton keeps making his point, which is that if the group is doing such great work, why not let everyone know by providing proof?

"Instead of criticizing and trying to turn me against them, why don't you help them?" Fenty asks.

Fenty does admit the Peaceoholics could do a better job of "stating" what they've done. "Everybody could do a better job. I could do a better job," says Fenty.

Reflecting on the interaction later, Moulton couldn't help wondering how Fenty could flippantly refer to all the cash he's directed toward the group as "de minimis." After all, $3 million is nothing to sneeze at. "I don't handle a budget of billions of dollars," says Moulton. "Maybe if I did, $3 million wouldn't seem like a lot."

What a bunch of crap. Exactly what is it that the Peaceoholics do? How is it that they are helping disadvantaged youths? Are they for profit or non-profit? If it is tax payer money they are getting, taxpayers should have the right to know its being spent well and on its intended purpose. Where has the millions of dollars gone?

The register voters have met you too FORMER Mayor Fenty.

As you stated, "I’ve met the kids, I mean, I don’t need any statistics.”

    NEWS FLASH:http://dcist.com/2010/08/three_arrested_after_brawl_breaks_o.php

...and Ron Moten of the Peaceoholics was in attendance at the DYRS ceremony.

Mr Fenty does not apply the same "I don't need any statistics!" standard to Chancellor Rhee or Gabe Klein and their great work; he's meticulously reviews and critiques the work they do and makes adjustments when necessary; and their records speak for themselves. Look at the Penn Ave bike lanes compared to their original layout.

What makes Ron Moten so special aside from his previous Peaceoholics $100k salary and ex-convict record?

If Peaceoholics are such a great non-profit, how much has the Mayor donated from his own personal bank accounts aside from tax payer dollars?

There you have it! The budget calls for pay raises and step increases to be frozen for city workers, but if you are a peaceaholic and/or Ron Moten all you have to do is "say" I'm working to save young people's lives, no invoices for work, nothing. Just "say" it and money flows. If that doesn't piss you off enough to get rid of Fenty nothing will. That's the living end!

Moten must have something so deep on Fenty that it's scary.

  • Taye

"Moten must have something so deep on Fenty that it’s scary".

Amen! Candycane1 I have been asking that question. What is it? No one can answer that question. Whatever it is, it must be very deep.

How is this not headline news on the Washington Post?

Keep going CP, this is getting very interesting!

So.... if I am a.... TEACHER, I can just SAY I am making a difference and keep my job? You dont need to pay attention to any stinking test scores or evaluations, I just TOLD YOU I am doing a good job. Oh, and if I can get 10 or 15 students to come with me then that makes it true right? FIELD TRIP!!!

Oh, Didnt I do that last October at freedom plaza? I guess this means he doesnt listen to the kids that DONT get locked up and take their lives and education seriously but he takes the word of the ones that drop out of school and end up convicted of committing a crime? I feel like Alice in wonderland. NOTHING makes sense in Fentyland.

If this crazy axxhole is reelected, we are in BIG DO DO.

MOTEN will probably get a high paying cabinet position. Then again he is making more by being Fenty's chief thug.

  • S.E.

"MOTEN will probably get a high paying cabinet position. Then again he is making more by being Fenty’s chief thug."

What in the Hell is wrong with "You People?" Don't you know that those "go-go" concerts and songs cost money?

  • http://.. Marie Jackson

    SE - Right.

Then we must not forget that for every $100 paid to Moten, $75 is set aside for Fenty's retirement fund.

candycane1 "Moten must have something so deep on Fenty that it’s scary."

Yes he does...Moten, Karim,Skinner, and Fenty are official members of the Tuesday night poker game for down low brothers!! Think about it..Fenty is treating all of them how Barry treats his whores, i.e. Donna Brighthaupt...

THIS BAMA HAS A LAW DEGREE AND WAS PRACTICING AT ONE TIME AND THE BEST HE COULD COME UP WITH WAS “It’s de minimis, I mean it’s so small, I can’t even believe a well-meaning person would even come close to criticizing. I bet it’s not more than $3 million, and they’ve probably done $10 million of work.”

WOW! I GUESS MS MINNE GREEN WAS RIGHT. "But to Green, a longtime community activist in Petworth, arrogance is no mere personality quirk but a character flaw often rooted in self-deception and a false sense of superiority." FROM WASH POST(8/18/10) COLUMNIST CORTLAND MILLOY

  • UNCG-grad

...maybe he was having a Mike Tyson moment: it's ludicrous...Fenty: it's deminimis....

diminimis as in the support Fenty NOW has compared to what he once had.

if he actually had a personality, he could aspire to become DC's version of Blagojevich....maybe

At least Fenty wasn't isn't trying to hide Moten; 'ol Ron has become the face of the campaign.

    Here comes the investigation:
