New 800-Acre Virginia Golf Course Aside, Trump’s Got Problems
Oh Donald Trump. You kill me, you really do.
Earlier this week, news broke that Trump had dropped millions on the Lowes Island Club, a country club with two championship golf courses in Loudoun County. Then he bragged to the Washington Post that “this place, when it’s finished, will be the finest club anywhere in the country…I already own the best ones, so I know.”
What a difference half a week makes. The news splashed all over newspapers and websites today is all about Trump’s failing casinos. Trump himself quit the board of Trump Entertainment Resorts, one of his many operations, on Friday. Here’s what the Washington Post is reporting on the subject: Read More “New 800-Acre Virginia Golf Course Aside, Trump’s Got Problems” »
NoMa Tries to Be Artsy
Public art in Vancouver. Note to future NoMa artists: Please design something nicer than this.
“NoMa” will never be SoHo. But it can always try.
The neighborhood formally known as “Swampoodle” just issued a press release soliciting applications for a $100,000 art project at the Capitol Plaza Building, located at 1200 First Street N.E. According to the press release, the committee “will consider a wide range of media including sculpture, mosaic, sidewalk insets, street furniture, stationary planters, landscaping, lighting, and painting treatments.”

Armed Forces Retirement Home Halts Major Development
The McMillan site is the green 25-acre site at the bottom of the image, directly right of the reservoir. The Armed Forces Retirement Home sits within the green 77-acre site above the Washington Hospital Center.
At various McMillan meetings I’ve attended, people have made vague, unexplained references to development at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) nearby.
“Ahhh! Development’s encroaching from all sides” was the gist of what people were saying. “Buildings will soon be sprouting up like weeds all around us!”
Now though, it appears there will be no development at the AFRH. Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that plans to construct housing, a hotel, a supermarket and medical offices were halted last fall.

Eastern Market Update: Slowly But Surely, It’s Getting Built
Just the other day I was wondering aloud about what was going on with the Eastern Market.
Apparently we’re in the “Let the public choose some design aspect” phase. Yes, I believe that’s the technical term.

Ben Bernanke’s Childhood Home Sold After Foreclosure
I’m probably supposed to comment here about great ironies and pain in this day and age: Even Ben Bernanke is touched by our collective financial collapse! Even our chief economist can’t protect his own halcyon memories from America’s economic downfall!
Okay, now here’s the story: The Wall Street Journal reports that Bernanke’s childhood home in South Carolina recently when into foreclosure. A young, local banker bought the property in December.

The Developer Donation Dance
In case you haven’t clicked your way over to Loose Lips this week, allow me to expound what you’ve missed.
In this week’s column, Mike “LL” DeBonis takes a look at donations to Adrian Fenty’s re-election campaign.
In three months, Fenty has reeled in $2.04 million. Leading the We-Love-the-Mayor fan club are developers and builders. In total, they donated 43.7 percent—$891,612—of Fenty’s total intake.

Dogfish Head Alehouse, Reportedly, No Longer Interested in Capitol Riverfront
Last week was a good one for the Capitol Riverfront, D.C.’s trying to be happenin’, new riverfront/ballpark neighborhood. News broke that the neighborhood would host Artomatic from late May to July. Plus, the city held its official groundbreaking for Diamond Teague Park, one of several new green spaces that will eventually line the river’s edge.
But alas, Feb. 16-20 may not be as kind to the Capitol Riverfront as Feb. 9-13. This morning, some unfortunate news rolled through my Google Reader.
Washington Business Journal reports that construction has been halted on the first residential section of The Yards. Also Dogfish Head Alehouse is, apparently, no longer interested in opening up a new location nearby.
Hold back your tears beer enthusiasts! You still have a few more treks to Fall Church in you!
