And Since We’re Discussing Endangered Historic Places…

Meads Row on H Street
The D.C. Preservation League is once again calling for nominations to its annual "Most Endangered Places" list. Last year's list included: Meads Row, a set of rowhouses on H Street NE; The much-debated Third Church of Christ, Scientist located downtown, which was at the center of a huge legal battle in [...]

Is Walter Reed the Next St. Elizabeths?

Is Walter Reed the next St. Elizabeths? They're both large scale medical campuses, now suddenly being redeveloped and reborn. They're both old. They've both treated famous people within their boundaries—Walter Reed of the more noble variety: President Dwight Eisenhower died there in 1969. Meanwhile, St. Elizabeths was home to “the man who tried to shoot [...]

Top 10 Housing Complex Posts of 2009

I was too busy feeding the Real World DC frenzy last Thursday to do the obligatory year-end top ten list. So, here you go:
(1) The Fall of Hammer Communications: How a Georgetown Ad Agency Built on McMansions Ended up in a Pile of Debt If not for the story, click for the comments alone.
(2) What’s [...]

D.C. Spent Roughly Two Thirds of Snow Budget in December, Seeks Federal Aid

Ah the December 2009 snow storm...so many memories.
While D.C. residents—and later, people all over the country—fussed over the meaning of a D.C. police detective pulling a gun during a snowball fight, the city spent $4 million on snow relief.
Does that seem like a lot? Yeah, I didn't know immediately either. But, it is—the sum [...]

Dubai Building Is Now World’s Tallest

Today the Burj Khalifa—the world's new record-breaker for tallest building—officially opened in Dubai.  According to this Al Jazeera video, it's 160 stories and is as tall as the previous tallest building, the Taipei 101, plus the Eiffel Tower combined.

Six Figure Earner Will Drive to Maryland to Avoid Bag Fee

The predictable bag fee backlash is underway.
As of Friday, it now costs five cents for most plastic grocery bags (exceptions listed here). One District man says he's not going to take it–at least that's what he recently wrote on a Columbia Heights listserv.
He's vowing to drive to Maryland for his groceries, or only buy things [...]

What to Expect From 2010′s Housing Market

The new year is upon us. December's copious top ten roundups are beginning to dwindle. Now, it's time to bring on the lists of hopes, dreams and expectations for 2010!
Benny L. Kass, a real estate columnist for the Washington Post, wrote his own piece entitled "What the new year and new decade will hold for housing [...]

You Want a Piece of the Real World DC—They’re Yours for the Taking

From left to right: Chris Wiggins, Beth Ploger and cast members Callie, Emily and Ashley.
So I mis-tweeted last night.
After arriving at Metromix's Real World DC premiere party, I called the event the "official RWDC party."
For the event to be official, it would probably need to be thrown by MTV. And no one from MTV was [...]

Scenes From BlackFinn’s Real World DC Premiere Party

Want to attend a party where a bunch of photographers, cameramen and reporters swarm around four twenty-somethings who up until six months ago were completely anonymous?
You probably can't get within ten feet of them unless you're a member of the media or a "friend." But you can buy them shots. And about an hour [...]

Free Bags That Will Remain Free in 2010

Bread baskets. Drink stirrers. Dessert mints. Toilet paper. Park benches. Savor these things while they're still available to you at no additional cost.
Grocery baggies are about to leave that list, as I blogged about earlier today. We're saving the Anacostia River here people–get with the program! But I was also alerted a few hours back [...]
