And just like that, it’s back from the dead: At her first annual State of the District Address tonight, Mayor Muriel Bowser pledged to get the long-delayed streetcar up and running on H Street NE and Benning Road and to extend it to Ward 7 and Georgetown.

The streetcar’s future was up in the air after Bowser’s transportation director, Leif Dormsjo, said the project was under review, including the H Street/Benning line whose construction was already largely complete. But now Bowser is promising not only to get the trolley running on that inaugural line, but to extend the line east of the Anacostia River as well as west to Georgetown.

The Georgetown extension was long part of the streetcar plan, although with the project’s fate uncertain, it appeared that construction beyond the first stretch might never take place. There had also been consideration of sending the line to the Minnesota Avenue or Benning Road Metro station.

Bowser did not, however, commit to completing any of the other planned lines of the streetcar, including one up Georgia Avenue in her home Ward 4 and one to Anacostia.

The mayor—or rather, someone on her staff—quickly followed up her announcement by tweeting out the following:
