Two Teams Pull Out of Walter Reed (but Wegmans Is Still in Contention)

In March, nine developers responded to the city's request for qualifications to develop the 67-acre Walter Reed site. In April, the city short-listed five of those teams. Now, the Washington Business Journal's Michael Neibauer reports, we're down to three.

Western Development and a team consisting of The Wilkes Co., Capstone Development LLC, and Quadrangle Development Corp. have pulled out of the running, leaving just three teams vying for the chance to develop the former army medical center into a mixed-use community: Forest City Washington, Hines-Urban Atlantic, and Roadside Development.

But since the top priority of half the city seems to be to bring a Wegmans supermarket to town, let me reassure you: The Wegmans proposal, from Roadside, is still in contention. In fact, it may be in a stronger position than before—there's less competition, and Neibauer reports that the Children's National Medical Center, which was previously partnering with Western Development, has teamed up with Roadside.

Responses to the city's request for proposals are due from the three remaining developers by July 12.
