Nine Developers Interested in Overhauling Walter Reed

One of the District's vaunted mega-development projects took a step forward this afternoon with the announcement that nine developers responded to the request for qualifications for the Walter Reed campus overhaul.

The list features some of the city's usual big players, including two currently undertaking other large redevelopment projects: Hines, which is completing CityCenterDC downtown, and Roadside Development, which is working on the CityMarket at O in Shaw. Others include Douglas Development, Forest City, and Western Development.

The campus was home to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center before its move to Bethesda in 2011. Just over half of the property—66.57 acres bounded by Fern Street and Alaska Avenue NW to the north, 16th Street NW to the west, Aspen Street NW to the south and Georgia Avenue NW to the east—is being transferred to the District, which hopes to develop it into a mixed-use site that will add vibrancy to the Georgia Avenue corridor.

The office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development issued the RFQ in January and received responses by March 15.

"We are excited about the level of interest in redeveloping the site and know the public will welcome the news that this large-scale redevelopment effort is moving forward," Mayor Vince Gray said in a statement.

The widespread interest in Walter Reed must come as a relief to the administration, coming less than two months after only one development team responded to a call for bids for another large city development project at Hill East.

Update: Since you asked, the other interested developers are: Allied Patriot, Grid Properties, Republic Properties Corporation, and a joint venture of The Wilkes Company, Capstone, and Quadrangle.
