Once home to Townes Groceries, the humble building at the northeast corner of 9th and S Streets NW has played host most recently to the Capital Pool Checkers Club, which moved there when it got too big for a barbershop down the street. If things go right for D.C. Housing Enterprises, they’ll have to move again, to make way for a project that will house kids aging out of the foster care system.

The building, called The Bridge, will have ten units and 3,270 square feet of ground floor retail. D.C. Housing Authority subsidiary D.C. Housing Enterprises is orchestrating the development, and the National Center for Children and Families will provide services. They’re looking at a budget of $3.82 million, but haven’t nailed it down yet—-DCHA isn’t funding it, so it’s unclear where the money will come from. And they need a zoning variance to boot! So don’t call off the checkers games yet.
