Reeves Center Watch: Transit Center Out, D.C. Center In?

Buildout has already begun in the former Municipal Deli space at the Reeves Center at 14th and U Street NW for a new post office, which has been displaced from its T Street location. Meanwhile, the District Department of Transportation's initial plan to put a service center for things like processing transit passes and handing out bike helmets has been tossed, and the solicitation for prospective tenants in the old Emma Mae Gallery is due towards the end of the month.

Several interested parties have toured the spot, and one will be quite familiar to U Street regulars: The D.C. Center, which currently leases space in the JBG-owned building a block away that's slated for redevelopment. The LGBT community organization has long been in search of a permanent home, having moved into their current location in summer 2010, after JBG moved forward with plans to build at their previous location on 14th Street. They've got one more year left on their lease, and no alternative next steps. "This is our goal this year, to win this space," says Nick McCoy, chair of the relocation committee.

Their confidence might be merited: Although the solicitation is technically run by the Department of General Services, Councilmember Jim Graham told MetroWeekly more than a year ago that he'd be "glad to advocate" for the D.C. Center's bid (Graham has helped another organizationwith his own space in the oddball building).

In other D.C. government leasing news, the Department of Housing and Community Development is finally filling one of its ground floor retail spaces with Grubb's Pharmacy (the other one is occupied by Industrial Bank, which also has a Reeves Center branch). Not terribly exciting for an Anacostia workforce that really just wants some better places to get lunch.

hmm, where should we go for our lunch? Beauracracy BBQ, or the Municipal Deli? They both sound so delicious, but I only have 3 hours to wait in line and I don't like filling out my order forms in triplicate, so let's head to the Municipal Deli. Do you have your money orders prepared for payment?

    Lydia,

Our new location will not be just a pharmacy! We will also be providing quality foods, coffee, drinks and snacks.

We look forward to being a part of the Anacostia community!
