Latino Aid Group Follows Its Clients North

Perhaps you've heard that the District's Hispanic population, once rooted in Adams Morgan and Mt. Pleasant, has been migrating north to Petworth and beyond? Now, one of the larger and more successful non-profits that's historically served that community—the Latino Economic Development Corporation—is picking up stakes as well, putting its 18th Street office on the market for $1.6 million.

Besides wanting to stick with its client base, LEDC also needs more space, having expanded from about 17 employees in D.C. 2006 to 25 today (they already started an office in Wheaton, which has taken in much of the South American immigrant population in recent years). Having picked up a big grant lately, they'll likely take on even more staff in the future, and are thinking of buying a place on Georgia Avenue to house them.

UPDATE, Wednesday 9:30 a.m. – Via LEDC executive director Manny Hidalgo, here are some specifics on why the organization wants to be in Ward 4:

  • Ward Four has seen a 50% migration rate among Latinos in neighborhoods along Georgia Avenue, NW from 2000-2010. Similarly, LEDC has seen a tremendous increase in demand for our services from Ward Four businesses and residents.
  • LEDC has a successful track record supporting Ward Four’s small businesses. In the past two years we served 129 clients and provided new facades to 14 businesses on Georgia Ave north of the Petworth metro station.
  • Ward Four also is home to many multi-family apartment buildings that are benefiting from our Affordable Housing Preservation Program. To date; we have served 19 buildings in Ward Four, or 40% of all buildings we assist.
  • Last year, approximately 14% of our clients were first time homebuyers in Ward Four. Ward Four has become the most attractive market in D.C. for Latinos.
