Giant Bows to Popular Will, Opens All Cash Registers

Shoppers at the Columbia Heights Giant were greeted this evening with fantastic news: A flyer promising that all 19 cash registers will be open from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and a rotisserie chicken to anyone who finds one closed (unless it's "broken or offline"). Looks like all the whining about epic lines stretching back into the food aisles, plus increased traffic from people busing up from the now-closed Shaw Giant, might have finally forced a change.

This is good news to hear because I shop at this Giant sometimes and the lines are very long. Giant is pretty good on their customer service. I use the Giant in Blair Park in Silver Spring, Maryland most times. Once the lines were long, as I was walking to my car, I mentioned the long lines to a store manager in the parking lot. He went back inside and opened more lanes. Also it depends on what neighborhood the Giant and Safeway is located. In upscale neighborhoods, residents demand good customer service. In apathetic communities, the store want give a dam either, unless many customers complain.

I've got three Safeways near me: one's got a smaller selection but their 6 checkouts are almost always open. The other two have better selections but of their 10+ checkouts, only two are open at any given time and there's NO self-checkout. Guess which one I shop at?

Great news. I had always heard through the grapevine that this was the highest grossing Giant in the country, so when you go in and there's only 6-8 checkouts open with lines 15-deep, it feels to me like they're taking the money and running rather than using it to provide better service.

Considering that during the '68 riots, Giant was left untouched because of the respect they had in the black community for their outreach and support of the community, this sounds like an easy decision to make.

Now only if we can get the 5th and K safeway to do the same thing

I wouldn't eat a Giant rotisserie chicken if they paid me. Some incentive!

I went to the Giant at 5pm on Sunday, and was dreading it for a several hour long trip. There were hardly any lines at all and it was one of my more pleasant Giant trips. I couldn't believe it! Now I realize it was because all the lines were open. Truly amazing how much difference that makes!

well they owe me a chicken - on 12/6 around 7p the lights were on at all the cashier checkout stands, but no cashier. I asked about 2 that didnt have a cashier, lites was on but I was told that no one was working them. Am I the only person that experience this.
