Housing Complex

Next At-Large Councilmember Will Favor Raising Height Limits

A few good, pro-density men. (Lydia DePillis)

Last night's At-Large Council debate at the Black Cat was full of raucous fun, featuring hardballs thrown both by generations of Loose Lipses and the candidates themselves. In the "support/don't support" section at the end, co-moderator Tom Sherwood got in a question about a subject close to Housing Complex's heart: If the feds went along with it, would you support raising building height limits around the city's monumental core?'

Every single one of the candidates–Josh Lopez, Bryan Weaver, Pat Mara, Vincent Orange, and Sekou Biddle–stood under the "support" side.

Of course, it's not clear that any of them actually know what the "monumental core" is. The National Capital Planning Commission defines it as the Mall and surrounding federal areas, like Potomac Park and Federal Triangle. But I've heard definitions ranging from that to the entire L'Enfant City, so this one might be a hard one to pin them down to later (and don't hold your breath on that ever happening anyway).

    Tom,

Is that a pabst blue ribbon beer can on your table?

  • Mike Madden

That PBR belonged to candidate Bryan Weaver, actually.

The PBR is one of many reason to love Bryan Weaver.

"Monumental core" is correctly defined as anywhere an overhead trolley wire would cause Capitol Hill Restoration Society and/or the Committee of 100 for the Federal City to have a collective coronary.
