Some Agencies to be Rudderless Come Monday

Well, it's the end of the year. Vince Gray gets inaugurated in three days. The Mayor has appointed or re-appointed a slew of agency heads, but a few key spots remain unfilled: The Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and the directors of the Departments of Housing and Community Economic Development (DHCD) and Transportation (DDOT) are big ones. Plus, there are the Departments of Real Estate Services (DRES), Parks and Recreation (DPR), Public Education Facilities Management Modernization (OPEFM), Human Services (DHS); as well as the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA), and Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH).

(Meanwhile, Gray wasted no time installing permanent directors of the Offices on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs and Cable Television).

Transition staff says there are no plans to announce more appointments before Sunday. Some agencies have interim directors: Senior construction manager Brian Hanlon has been elevated to head DRES, for example, and Ayris Scales is temporarily leading DCCAH. But spokespeople confirmed this morning that nobody's been installed at DHCD or DDOT, so come Monday, staffers at two of the District's most important agencies may have no bosses. Woo hoo!

UPDATE, 1:48 p.m. - No announced interim director for OPEFM, either.

Please don't forget about the DC Department of Mental Health. Mental health is very important in today's world because many are walking around suffering from some type of mental health disorder and don't realize it.

Currently being headed by and interim Director and not mentioned here is the very important Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.

A very troubled agency that deserves the attention and national and local search for competent leadership.

And the difference is what from what happens normally?

  • Sally

What's the wait? Just find a couple more Sharon Pratt Kelly era people and appoint them to the positions.

  • petey

Yeah, we will surely get some retreads in many of those positions. Also, OCTO has no boss either. Transition-fail.

Lydia, small typos - DPR is the acronym for Parks and Recreation. Bill Howland Jr. remains towing and plowing over at DPW.

OPEFM is Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization.

  • Lydia DePillis

Gah, right you are, thanks dcvoterboy. There's a fly in my alphabet soup!

  • dcvoterboy

    Gah v 2.0!

we both missed DHCD too. (Department of Housing and Community Development)

  • Lydia DePillis

    Wow. Fixed.
