La Casa Shelter is Funded, Will Likely Begin Construction in 2012

Give it two years. (Darrow Montgomery)

Tucked away in D.C.'s section of the Senate's draft budget is something homeless advocates have been waiting on for a long time: Enough money to finally replace the recently-closed La Casa shelter in Columbia Heights with a single room occupancy facility to house homeless men. Department of Human Services official Laura Zeilinger confirms that part of the $10 million line item for "permanent supportive housing"–down from $17.2 million allocated last year for the same purpose–will fill out La Casa's construction budget, though she doesn't expect a groundbreaking until 2012.

This line item in no way means the LaCasa Project will be funded. The City led by CM Graham has sat on funding for 6 years to support political deals with Donatelli Development.
