DCUSA Gets Plaqued

For any Ward 1 voters who may have forgotten that lots of government help went into the building of the DCUSA complex–$40 million worth–the politicians responsible were honored today with a plastic panel that will eventually be replaced by an honest-to-god metal one.

Apropos of no particular event, other than perhaps the imminent completion of the Columbia Heights streetscape, Mayors Adrian Fenty and Anthony Williams again celebrated the presence of major retailers. But the biggest cheers were for Councilmember Jim Graham, whose whole office had come out for the party.

"I've got to thank God for every hand that has touched this," Graham said, before praising the executive. "Our mayor, our current mayor, gets things done."

Perhaps we should have another celebration when the building, still 25 percent empty, is fully leased. Fenty promised to also attend the ribbon cutting for IHOP when it opens later this year (even though that will likely be after the election). Just now, Graham declared the event a success: "We had a wonderful event @ DCUSA, where Mayor Anthony Williams practically endorsed Mayor Fenty and I. Looking good Ward 1."

UPDATE, Wednesday, 11 a.m. – The Post's Nikita Stewart read between the lines here, and got Mayor Williams to go on record supporting Fenty and Graham–which kind of justifies the whole campaign rally feel of the event.

Is Ellwoods still breaking ground on their build-out this month? Was by there just a few days ago and haven't seen any signs of life yet. I really hope they were serious with their latest promises.
