Anybody Else Want a Pawn Shop?

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4B, which has been fighting a new pawn shop seeking to locate at 7301 Georgia Avenue all year, finally used its legislatively-granted great weight last night to squash Famous Pawn’s ambitions once and for all.

First Cash Financial’s president Rick Wessel tried his best to counter the audience’s overwhelming animosity towards his new shop, which would have been relocated from lower Georgia Avenue (the building is being demolished, to make way for new condos).

“That’s really just a Hollywood myth that pawnshops promote crime,” he said, pointing to the Georgetown location’s innocuous presence. “If you come into our shop, you’ll think it’s a jewelry store.”

Despite Wessel’s efforts—and his offer to provide a “financial contribution” to a local ANC or civic association—the panel remained unconvinced, voting unanimously to oppose Famous Pawn’s application for a license. Wessel told Housing Complex afterward that he was confident the broader community not present at the meeting would support the business locating there, but that he’d consider going somewhere with a friendlier ANC.

“We’re open to a lot of things,” he said.
