All this self-congratulating about fact-checking, and you forget the verb in your opening sentence?

It was once the tradition in cities that the name "Place" meant the street had no outlet - e.g., was a cul-de-sac or otherwise dead-ended. Perhaps Acker was once a dead-end that has since been cut through to a connection - or the other way around, a through street that has been blocked off. Or, more likely, nobody ever really got the name straight. It could be worse: Rural areas are loaded with roads that have "old" in front of their name, meaning they once were the main route from A to B but have been superseded by a newer route. Invariably, half the people in town use the "Old" and half don't; deciding which is correct can lead to fistfights.
