Treasury Grants $33.7 Million for District Affordable Housing
Ah financing—such an elusive things these days, especially for those projects that won’t deliver million- dollar penthouses or pricey apartments with monument views.
Yesterday, the Treasury Department announced a 33.7 million grant to D.C. for affordable housing.
The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) hasn’t decided which project(s) will benefit from the money yet.
Back in April, it solicited applications from “projects focused on elderly housing; special needs housing; housing for chronically homeless individuals and families in mixed-income buildings with supportive services; preservation of housing affected by expiring federal subsidies; new/substantial rehabilitation of housing; and new construction and preservation of affordable housing units,” stated a DHCD press release.
Still looking to apply? Too late. “The application deadline was June 1. DHCD will review all qualified applications and will announce the selection of projects at a later date.”

Much of this money should be used to rehabilitate privately-owned multi-family units that are going to hell in a basket–and the owners should reimburse DC for these costs or lose these properties.
DCHD should be working with the Departments of Health, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, Public Works, and the Environment–as well as the OAG–to determine which properties pose the greatest ROI for this venture.
Just my thoughts after spending two years watching DC’s progress towards a functioning, lead poisoning prevention and response system…
