Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School could become “Stevens Hotel” under one developer’s plan.

This West End elementary school survived 140 years as a school before closing at the end of 2008. It was the first school for freed slaves’ children in the District, and was also famous for being first daughter Amy Carter’s school in the 1970s.

But the elementary era is over. On Thursday night, three development teams—finalists from a list of nine—presented plans for Stevens.

The Peebles Corp., based in Florida, would like to build the Stevens Hotel, a luxury, boutique operation to be run by Morgans Hotel Group Co.

Moddie Turay has a larger mixed-use project in mind: A Kimpton hotel (man, Kimpton’s just dropping hotels everywhere!), office space, and retail, which would include another L Street property, according to the Washington Business Journal. And finally, EQR (Equity Residential)/ Neighborhood Development Corporation is proposing multi-family housing, courtyards, and ground floor retail on the site, plus a “Memory Wall, reflecting the history of the Stevens School.”
