Columbia Heights News: 11th Street Wine Bar Opening Early June

Don't mean to be stepping on Young and Hungry's toes here. But in D.C., development news is often restaurant news since many of our eateries open in newly constructed buildings or long-abandoned rowhouses.

On that note, I was up in Columbia Heights on 11th Street earlier today, following up on this past post on Meridian Pint, a new restaurant slated to open in late 2009/early 2010.

Meridian Pint's new building is making steady progress. But down the street, at the corner of Lamont and 11th, another establishment is nearing completion.

Room 11 already has its website up. And its doors will open in early June, "depending on inspections," says partner Paul Ruppert.

This morning, Ruppert's co-partner Nick Pimentel and another worker were chipping away at their personal punch list. The floor, made of recovered pine wood from Community Forklift, is laid down. But the seating—which will be limited to 20 spots indoors—is still missing. The place looked cozy, even with a layer of dust covering it.

(Thankfully, there will be an outdoor patio with room for close to 30, says Ruppert.)

As for the menu itself, expect bottles “from all over, especially from less traditional wine-making areas: South America, South Africa, and Australia,” says Ruppert. For those grape-beverage-averse, Ruppert also promises a full cocktail menu and a few beers on draft.

The establishment will also serve cheese, charcuterie, sandwiches, small plates and desserts from Paisley Fig, where partner Pimentel's wife is a chef. Paisley Fig also supplies desserts to 14th St. wine bar Cork.
