Best of D.C.: Accepting Nominations for “Best Real Estate/Development Blog”

No, no, no: I will not be nominating and then choosing my own blog in this category. That’s off the table.

But nearly every day I peruse other local real estate and development blogs, so I figured why not acknowledge some of the good work they do. A few to consider…

(1) Greater, Greater Washington: Meaty posts on development and transportation issues with city planning buzzwords—”smart growth,” “walkable communities,”—aplenty. (Washingtonian just did an interview with lead blogger David Alpert).

(2) DC Metrocentric: “New Buildings, Construction, Destruction, Planning, Real Estate, and Gossip as it happens in the Nation’s Capital,” as the website states. Plus great photography and images and a good eye for spotting interesting buildings and projects around the area.

(3)BuildingDC: Constant updates about what’s going on the market, what’s going on the auction block, plus financing advice and plenty of other real estate-related news.

(4)UrbanTurf: Bills itself as “The D.C. Real Estate Guide” with constant neighborhood and new building profiles.

(5)DCMud: Constant reports on development and building news around the area.

(6)Prince of Petworth: The “Prince” has expanded his kingdom from Petworth to central Northwest in general, and he’s always got his ears open and his camera ready covering interesting architecture and new developments in the area.

Tie between Greater Greater Washington and DCMUD.

DCMud over Greater Greater Washington. Alpert is an arrogant know-nothing. By contrast, DCMud covers stuff you don’t see elsewhere. They aren’t 100% accurate (then again, they’re not doing any worse than the Post or the City Paper), but they’re worth reading.

What does your opinion of David Alpert have to do with the quality of the blogs? Also, how’s he a know-nothing? He gets the fundamental concepts of urban design.

My opinion of Alpert is based solely on the quality of his blog. Never met the guy. I expect someone who writes daily about a topic to be able to do more than “get the fundamental concepts.” YMMV.

Love UrbanTurf. I think their mix of original content about neighborhoods and condos, and the new blog feature make it one of the best in DC.

Do you think you could have waited on this article until AFTER voting ended before putting in your two cents worth? Seems like the vote counter may skew the vote.

This post has nothing to do with the reader’s poll. I’m making the decision. I just wanted to collect input, see what kind of comments turned up, and see if I missed any great real estate/development blogs. And though I’m very excited to see what the reader’s poll turns out, it’s not as if that’s a particularly clean and straightforward process. Plenty of businesses are campaigning heavily to get their votes up. And one site even contacted us recently about setting up a widget to directly link to us and add a vote for them. (That’s not something we could assist with.) So if you want something to win, you gotta work for it! That’s the internet age for you.

I agree with Pam on Urban Turf! It is a great read and resource!

Keep your turf cooler… look into Flexsand and keep your synthetic lawn 20-30 degrees cooler!
