The African American Church Inaugural Ball, Fur Coat City!

So I had the pleasure of spotting the back of Al Sharpton's head last night—unmistakable!—at The African American Church Inaugural Ball at the Grand Hyatt at 1000 H Street. The event was to honor twenty five "Keepers of the Flame," who have been influential in the fight for civil rights over the years. Among the honorees were Dr. Maya Angelou, Donna Brazile, General Colin Powell, and Della Reese-Lett. I'm not sure how many of these people were actually in attendance. As you can imagine, it was a very long program, complete with choir performances and impassioned speeches. The event started at 6 p.m., I believe. I arrived around 10 p.m., and the ballroom was still packed.

A slow trickle of guests were leaving the building as I arrived though. Before I even reached the ballroom, I was immediately struck by the preponderance of fur coats draped over peoples' arms and shoulders. I have never, ever, ever seen so much fur in my entire life. Thank god PETA or the Humane Society were not holding events next door. Their nights would have been ruined.

    How tacky.

No, this is not tacky! It's only tacky to those who don't have a fur coat (envy?!!) and accept the "religion" of animal "rights"! It's practical! Fur coats are beautiful...on human beings! It's cold in D.C. If I were there I'd be wearing my fur coat as well! 'Nuff said.

One more thought: Who gives a damn what PETA or HSUS or any of the other animal worship cult groups think?!!! Who gave them the power to order or command our lives or lifestyle choices in any way? When one is wearing a LEGAL commodity explanations are not required or necessary. Those who require or demand such explanations are way out of line and need to get a life...or psychiatric therapy!

Just like Cadillacs, Gucci, Timberland and Louis Vuitton - fur has become SO ghetto. People need to evolve and stop wearing dead animals.

I don't have a major problem with fur actually. I wasn't implying that with my PETA comment. I just think that (aforementioned) scenario would have been ridiculous.

Tacky Tacky Tacky. Fur can be beautiful, and it is certainly warm, but women (and men) like the two in this picture take tacky to a new level. I agree with the poster above that like LV and Timberland, fur (in the 1980's style like in the photo) has become cliche.

I wouldn't say that the society today is built on the whole survival of the fittest seeing as people don't have any natural threats besides from their self. There for I think it's sad that people have been able to grow such a big business by slaughtering and selling dead animals fur. People should have some more compassion at the least. I do believe that people may wear their damn fur coats if they want but there are far better choices you could make. Fur is a mainstream need and frankly the whole fur look is rather overrated and practical has nothing to do with the tacky-factor. Global warming is caused by your selfish needs so you won’t be to use those fur coats much longer anyway.

Maybe those two were friends with Hariette Walters! Heh.

I too couldn't give rat's rip about PETA and their perverted agenda. The cool-aid drinkers who regurgitate their message on blogs or elsewhere really should accept other's have rights to choose as well. Go away.

  1. Back On the Usual Housing Complex Beat… - Housing Complex - Washington City Paper

[...] So the past few days, Housing Complex took a little break from reporting about, um you know, housing. Instead I focused on pedicabs, inaugural garb, and empty restaurants. It was a nice little break: Rihanna made her Housing Complex debut, and we’ve got a nice little debate going about fur coats (tacky or no? The controversy roars on). [...]
