More People Moving to D.C. Than Leaving

They may not being filling the empty condos in Mount Vernon Triangle. Or the colossal estates of Georgetown. Or the desperate to be flipped fixer-uppers of Petworth, Columbia Heights, and other fringey areas.

But they are here. According to moving company Mayflower Transit, new residents provided a net population gain to Washington D.C. in the last year.  The city “gained a whole lot more new residents than it lost in 2008,” the Washington Business Journal writes:

The company, which bases its numbers on about 200,000 interstate household moves, says 68.5 percent of its business in The District last year was inbound moves. Just 31.5 percent were outbound moves. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says The District had a net gain of about 5,100 jobs in 2008.

On a percentage basis, DC ranks number one among states for net gains.
