Whither the Suburban Mall?
It’s apparently the “wave of the future”: malls are being redeveloped with residential units and office spaces. So in other words, they’re being retrofitted as mixed-use communities. Perhaps these new structures will even have natural light. And niches and spots with fresh air. Oh the horror.

We have such an mall conversion (actually a tear-down/rebuild) in SW DC. The old Waterside Mall is now gone, being replaced by a new street and several mix use buildings. We (or the developers, rather) call it Waterfront Station now. Come see phase one completed in March of 2010.
